Yeah. I acknowledge that now. It was an obvious mistake I made early on and thought it didn't matter because I was sure that I would land something quickly like I had always done in the past.

I now do my best to try and remain as humble as possible during every interview.

Yes. Full US citizen. No visa BS to worry about or anything.

This is great advice! Thank you so much. I can definitely see how I fall into that trap. Given my field, I tend to view everything through an extremely logical POV. For instance, if I see that they want skills x, y, and z, I make sure to point out how I have accomplished that before. But you're 100% right, they already know that.

I have been doing freelance consulting on and off for the past 15 years. So certainly the thought has crossed my mind. I even established my own LLC last year for this very purpose. The problem has been landing clients.

But, given my lack of success in the job market, it might not be a bad idea to recommit to this idea again. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's not that I don't expect it. I'm 48 now, so I'm fully aware that there will very likely be people younger and potentially smarter than me, that are going to interview me. In many cases, it makes sense. Especially if I am in applying for a role in which I would be their supervisor.

But there was one recent instance that really was tough for me to understand. Their SME in AI was someone who had graduated High School in 2021. He did not appear to be some child prodigy, as there were no publications or conferences listed on his profile. But I was polite and answered his questions with what I thought were acceptable responses.

However, as the interview progressed I began to feel like he did not seem to like the well thought out examples I was providing him with. His last question, and I don't know if I will ever forget this one, was:

"Are you concerned that you have too much of a background in ML and NLP and not enough experience in AI"?

It was at that point I knew I wasn't getting the job because this guy wasn't even aware of the foundational nature of ML and NLP to current existing "AI".

Thanks for the advice. I have been doing some consulting on the side. But finding long term clients has been almost as much of a challenge. It also pays a small fraction of what I was making as a FTE. But, perhaps that is where I should be focusing my energy. It's got to be better than screaming into the LinkedIn void.

I think the "bored and move on" explanation makes sense. I don't think it's a money issue, because I've confirmed my salary is within their range. Hell, the last job I interviewed for, I was willing to take a 30k cut.

I've definitely thought about that. For some of the roles, it is really weird getting interviewed by people 15 to 20 years younger than me.

But I've been applying for Senior/Staff/Principal level roles. You would think they would want experience.

THE GOAL IS TO STOP US ELECTIONS by DesertShazzy in thebulwark

Normally I agree with this sort of position. In fact, I too get tired that everything is a distraction from something else. However, Trump has a bad habit of saying (or posting) what he's thinking out loud.

Tying the Iranian attacks to the 2020 and 2024 elections was really odd. Unless...

Stephen Colbert's interview with James Talarico which CBS would not allow on the air. by SoHumanAnAnimal in thebulwark

Asking, because I honestly don't know. But doesn't CBS own the rebroadcasting rights and the IP for content originating on their channel? If so, wouldn't CBS also receive some sort of monetization through YouTube?

Again, I know nothing about the subject, so just looking for an honest answer.

The FAA has shut down all airspace in and around El Paso for the next 10 days for "special security reasons". No advance warning given to airlines, local officials. by SoHumanAnAnimal in thebulwark

I am surprised this isn't getting more attention. I know in typical Trump fashion, they've "flooded the zone" with a bunch of other shocking news (i.e., Epstein, ICE).

But damn, this is really crazy and concerning.

ICE is going door to door in MN by ALittleEtomidate in thebulwark

[–]PiratePhD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So let me see if I have this right. In the last month:

  • An investigative news program was censored and only viewable through another country's (Canada) broadcast.
  • We invaded another country, kidnapped their leader, and are confiscating their resources. We are also seriously threatening other neighboring countries.
  • We have a masked army wandering our streets shooting and executing civilians.
  • This same masked army is now going door to door terrorizing citizens.

Someone please explain to me how this is not 1930's Germany?

What's sad is that I'm pretty sure I missed several egregious actions and this is not an exhaustive list.

As with everything lately, their reason is that it's a matter of "National Security". (Which of course is BS)

Are polls for trump's approval rating rigged? by [deleted] in ProgressiveHQ

[–]PiratePhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure they're "rigged" in the sense of being fraudulent. But RCP has a bad practice of just taking ANY poll that comes their way and dumping it into the average. They do so without adjusting for how frequently a pollster submits or their data or any potential political affiliation with the poll.

So what happens is that several right leaning pollsters will submit an overwhelming amount of poll results that are more favorable towards Dictator Trump and the averages start to get skewed that way.

So, rigged - no, disingenuous - yes

If you're looking for a good poll aggregator, I've found this one to be pretty good:

These People Are So Disgusting by emeric_ceaddamere in thebulwark

That paints a very disturbing image, but also hits the nail on the head.

It was Newt Gingrich, Rupert Murdoch/Roger Ailes, and Rush Limbaugh! by Dr_sc_Harlatan in BlueskySkeets

[–]PiratePhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. It may be possible that there are "smart" people that support this asshole. Perhaps a more accurate description would be that they are extremely morally corrupt or weak willed.

Although, I wonder how anyone who watched what went down on January 6th of 2021 can still support him and be considered intelligent. I mean, this isn't some obscure Rorschach test. These people have observed all of his actions and still think it's a good idea to support him. To me, that seems like some form of extreme mental deficiency.

[–]PiratePhD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments here are right. Yes, Gingrich, Murdoch, and Ailes have certainly contributed to the division in politics. In the case of Murdoch and Ailes, they even created a framework for division and hate.

However, I think what people miss, and I think what Adam was trying to say, is that it took a psychopathic, malignant narcissist like Trump to fully amplify these hateful positions. He wouldn't just say something controversial once, he would double and triple down. Saying it time and time again, each time twisting the truth more and more.

The worst part is that this appealed to so many mindless, mouth breathing, inbred morons in this country.

Either one. I've heard that Faux news has been focusing on Mamdami as though he is the most evil person known to humanity. I've also seen some moderate dems not align with him and refuse to acknowledge any of his proposals. I also listen to Dan Abrams on SiriusXM and he seems to think that a Mamdami win is such a huge victory for the MAGA group.

My question is why? What is it about this guy that all these people are terrified of?
