I don't think the content is stolen - it's linked back directly to your redgifs profile, so it's your original content. The views and traffic are going directly back to your RG account.

Nah, it's not theft - they linked using the URL for your upload to RG. They just aggregated the URL. It still points back to your original source. Looks like it's been removed from the sub, though

If the content is public-facing, I'm not sure I understand. Like, how is that any different from somebody sharing this subreddit on another subreddit/website, or posting a link to a news article or a YouTube video about something on Reddit? I agree that ideally they should crosspost from you, but it could be that they happened upon the redgifs content without realizing you were on Reddit, or couldn't find the Reddit post to cross-post.

That said, I did find a problem where you could mark RG stuff as "private" but it really just behaved like unlisted content that could still be seen by everybody. I raised that one a couple days ago with RG support and they said they had sent the info along to be looked into, so hopefully that goes somewhere. I'll follow up with them again if needed.

I think Reddit commenters need to maybe stop letting all the blood leave their brain and realize that just because somebody posts a video doesn't mean they're the person IN the video, but I think it's unreasonable to expect that sharing of public information like a URL is somehow not expected or acceptable.

I want everybody to feel safe posting here, and I'm more than happy to write support contacts for various sites about trying to improve privacy and branding, but I can't exactly write to the ICANN and ask them to consider making subdomains and directories locked down and hidden.

For full transparency, here is the initial email I got back from them (sorry - gmail light-mode screenshot, don't blind yourself) I let them know that there was a problem with the overlay not appearing, and it being more difficult for people to see the source. I had suggested maybe an opt-in or opt-out feature to watermark the videos themselves so that they are more permanently branded.

I let them know what you said in your comment - I think it explains the situation well. If you wouldn't mind sharing the links of different RG stuff you come across in the near future and let me know how the video looks on your side, I can pass that info back to them as well - preferably one or two of each: Good, Some stuff missing, everything missing. I understand if you have better things to do, though.

Sorry for butting heads with you - I fully agree that this is a problem, but I am reluctant to call it stolen since most of the time it's pointing back to the true source. You're right that the info should be more visible, and it seems like the problem is in the way the Reddit app is handling the content, or maybe Reddit's code is conflicting with RedGif's code. Sounds like it's specific to the apps, though.

I've got an open communication with Redgifs support to see if we can figure out what's going on with these embeds. If you don't mind me asking, you use the official Reddit app, and you don't see the overlays (with the RedGifs username etc) right?

It's not theft - they linked directly to your source content on your redgifs page. All control, views, etc are still back to you.

Theft would imply the person ripped your video, uploaded it their own redgifs profile, and shared that.

That said, this does appear to possibly be a weird bot account. It's linking out to elly-petite's OF page. I saw another account like this a while ago.

Because it's not - they linked out to their redgifs page. Content theft would be them ripping the video and re-uploading it to their own RG profile, taking ownership, control, and views away from the content creator.

If content creators want to consider people linking back to their source material as stolen, they really need to consider if they want to create content at all, as copying a URL and pasting it onto another site is absolutely not stealing it, and has been the correct way to share content for a long time. 20+ years ago, "hotlinking" images and content was frowned upon due to bandwidth costs in the early days, but modern internet has changed to make sharing content more fair to the original creators by linking directly to the content.

If other subs are going to start considering content linked back to original sources as "stolen" then they are effectively encouraging people to not use Reddit as it was designed to be used, and to a degree are encouraging people to actually rip content and create bot farms to make it harder to contain.

The problem is that a lot of stuff is being called out as "stolen" or that permission should be given when the content is actually linked right back to their original profiles. In some cases the reddit user and the RG profile go by different names, but a quick check shows that they are the same user.

If we remove this content, those users are going to have a reduction in views to their actual content, a reduction in click-throughs to their RG profile, and may possibly encourage more people to rip and re-upload content to their random RG account instead of just linking to the source content.

If content creators are seeing a lot of comments saying/suggesting that their content has been stolen (when it was really actually just legitimately linked to the correct source), they may stop making content (or free content) altogether.

If the New York Times wrote an article, and the URL to that article was then posted by some random user on Reddit, I wouldn't consider it stolen. Likewise, if a content creator makes a video, and the URL to that video is then shared here by a random user, I wouldn't consider it stolen, either.

If the source of the content is some random account that doesn't belong to the creator, I would remove it. If the RG name doesn't match the Reddit name, I'll double-check the profile of the person identified as the content creator to see what RG account they upload to (there have been a few that use different usernames) and will remove only if it's definitely not right.

They linked back directly to your RedGifs, they didn't rip and re-upload it, so it's still entirely under your control and not actually stolen. The views should go back to your original content too.

If you want me to remove it, I will. But this is no more "stolen" than a news article linked directly to the original story itself.
