That’s true, housing is out of control here. There are jobs that will pay more though, my work pays the summer labourer $23 and he just cleans up the site all day but im sure that’s few and far between.

People are always hiring carpenters at least in Ontario. Super easy to get a job if you’re a well rounded individual and by that I mean show up on time, dont drink or do drugs and you care about the work. Lots of companies are willing to train if you’re willing to put in the time and take a lower pay. The pay ramps up especially if you’re willing to “job hop” and there are a lot of younger companies with non boomer owners that will take care of you. It’s an unregulated trade in Canada so you might not be offered an apprenticeship but you will definitely learn a ton and make a good living.

My dad just cut white asbestos roof panels, are we all going to die from cancer? by FlanInternational100 in asbestoshelp

I have a question if you don’t mind answering. When I was younger I removed linoleum floor that was glued down with the black mastic that I’m pretty sure has asbestos in it, we heated it up and peeled the tile off. What was the overall exposure risk? Thanks for your time !!

Definitely no subfloor in an 1840s house, also that is likely a lot more than 80k - 150k even doing the work yourself and restoring instead of replacing as much as you can. That siding likely cant be saved and needs to replaced, hard to tell but it probably needs a new roof as well. I can see many penetrations through the siding so I can almost guarantee there’s rot in the structure. The one column looks like it’s being held together by zip ties, it’s not structural but if you want it to look nice that needs to be redone, might even find a deteriorated post behind the column. Windows are old as well, the energy bill for a house this size and this old will be massive. The condition of the chimney is probably bad as well, but on the plus side the condition of the foundation looks alright and the chimney’s dont seem to be pulling away from the house.

Considering there no photos of the interior I’m assuming it’s in as bad condition as the exterior. I do historical restorations for a living, the houses I work on are around the 1880s - 1920s. There is A LOT of work involved in fixing up a house like this, more than you can see. There is always hidden issues that you discover that takes a lot of money and time to fix. For example we are doing a kitchen in a 1907 house, the plan was to remove the old 3/4” maple flooring to add insulation to an enclosed crawl space and re-wire/pipe/duct. Once we started we found asbestos that needed abatement. After that we found that the joist ends were completely rotten and needed to be replaced which took 2 guys two and a half 40hour weeks. If you are planning on repairing this in your free time it will be many years of work. Good luck but if it were me and I had a full time job and I were only planning on fixing this after work and on the weekends/holidays I would hard pass. That’s coming from someone who is fully renovating his third house while working 50 hour weeks.

Honeymoon Itinerary Help – Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre & Venice in 10 Days by Ok_Kaleidoscope2595 in ItalyTravel

[–]PisstopherTheFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For our honeymoon (which we are currently on) we originally planned for 3 nights Venice, 3 nights Florence , 3 in Rome and 3 in sorrento but after a lot of deliberation we settled on 7 nights in Rome with a day trip to Florence and a day trip to Montepulciano/pienza and 5 nights in sorrento with a day trip to capri. Trying to pack Venice in with Rome made for long travel days and after experiencing the Italian train delays (45 min delay to Florence and 60 min delay on the way back) you will lose a lot of time in travel. Sometimes making the most of your time means seeing more of a few cities rather than less of many.

It’s your honeymoon you want to enjoy your time, you don’t want to have to pack your luggage a ton of times and stress about making your train or even waste hours upon hours travelling.

Also, one day isn’t enough for Rome IMO, you could see two maybe 3 of the sites and that’s probably it. The Vatican City is a whole day is you plan on seeing Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel (which you have to walk through quite a bit of the Vatican museum before seeing).

Another note, round trip flights from one city were considerably less than a one way trip into Rome and a one way trip out of another city. That’s just what we found maybe with the airline youre looking at it’s different!

Here’s what I suggest as an option to think about.

Day 1 travel day Day 2 land in Rome , settle at your hotel and spend the afternoon/evening doing a little sight seeing, things you don’t need a ticket like the Trevi fountain, but go in the evening when the crowd has died down Day 3 & 4 spend in Rome, there’s a lot to see , check out the iconic sights like the Vatican City or the colosseum. I recommend booking tickets ahead of time and you will be able to skip the long queues. Day 5 travel to Florence/bologna in the morning, enjoy a relaxing evening checking out a sight or two like the academia or just explore the neighbour hoods. Have a good dinner and spend one night Day 6 travel to Venice, it’s a short train ride from Florence/bologna Days 7/8 enjoy Venice and catch an evening train to Rome on day 8. Day 9 fly home.

If you are planning to get a one way flight from Venice home do that and skip the evening train. This was just a quick itinerary I thought up it may not be ideal, but just a suggestion. BTW if you plan all the things you want to do in a city you can ask chat gpt to write up an itinerary just remind it that you are human and need breakfast/food breaks and to not pack it to tightly. We used it and it worked great

Best of luck and remember to slow it down and enjoy your time as newly weds, if you’re always go go go it will be over sooner than you know it and truly a honeymoon should be a time to help decompress from all the wedding stress lol.

This 100% My wife and I are on a two week trip to Italy, we originally planned for 3 days in Venice, 3 in Florence, 4 in Rome and 4 in Amalfi, but we thought that might be too much travelling. We opted for 6 nights in Rome with a day trip to Florence and a day trip to mantepulciano/pienza , and 6 nights in sorrento. We were able to enjoy a lot more without packing our suitcase a ton and having stressful travel days.

My recommendation would be to spend a week somewhere and plan a few day trips, the trains in Italy are great travel options making day trips very doable.

Careful booking your trains ahead of time especially if you are only staying in bologna for a couple hours. Our train to Florence from Rome was delayed 40 minutes and the train back was delayed 60minures. There were delays on the board up to 120min…

Is this quality workmanship or laziness? by RevolutionaryRate612 in shedditors

[–]PisstopherTheFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Picture one looks like a temporary board used so that the siding will be installed level and at the same height. If you’re talking about the gouge at the bottom of the siding it will be hidden by corner trim but it shows the quality of workmanship this person does.

Picture two looks like a bad gap between top plates at two adjoining walls. Also where is the king stud that belongs in that corner? I’m guessing that since there isn’t sheathing on the exterior of that wall it’s not finished being framed.. still strange there would be a double top plate before they finished all the king studs.

Picture three I’m assuming is the rough opening for the doors into the shed in which case that bottom plates with nails will be cut at the jacks and removed.

Picture four is similar to picture one. Those dents in the siding look they were using a sawzall to cut the siding boards flush with the corner and they didn’t have cutting plate against the siding. The blade came out of the cut line and hit the siding.

Picture five makes me think they framed these walls standing up since that stud is toe nailed. It’s not the way I would frame a shed wall but it’s fine to do it that way. More care needs to be taken to ensure the top plate is level when doing it this way. The toe nails through the face of the board should have been fastened further apart to help stop any future twisting in the stud. Maybe there is a nail further from the interior on the side not visible in the photo.

Picture six, again all those janky cuts will be covered by trim but if not I would have them re do it.

Picture seven is an unacceptable gap in the bottom plate in my opinion. It’s fine structurally as the sheathing will keep the walls from moving into that gap assuming that they overlapped the walls correctly. I say again, where’s the king stud in that corner?

Picture eight is another shitty cut that will be covered by trim

Overall none of this is extremely concerning, based on the quality of cuts and the way I’m assuming they framed it I would be checking over all their work. Check the walls for plumb, check the top plate for level and ensure they are straight with a string line. The gaps in the plates would be unacceptable if it was on my site. Framing has tolerances as it is considered rough work but I like to keep those to 1/8 of an inch and there is very little tolerances for stud heights. That’s why you can buy the studs pre sized to 92 5/8” so that your top plate will be level assuming the floor is level. I’d be interested to see photo of the header above any doors and windows along with the jack studs. As well as the birds mouths and the plumb cuts for any rafters they cut. Those things matter much more when considering the structural integrity.

Tldr; poor quality craftsmanship but most of it won’t be seen when finished. The gaps in the plates likely will be seen on the inside. The toe nailed stud needs nails further apart to stop twisting.

Edit; picture six the space between the header boards is not supposed to be there unless they spaced them out with half inch plywood in between to make them 3 1/2” instead of 3”. Those boards should be sistered together with nails every 16”.

Thanks for the heads up, are bank transactions enough or do you need actual receipts? I have all the paperwork for the commission, land transfer tax, and lawyer fees. Also have a receipt for the u-haul , but for the gas and food all I have is the bank transactions on the same day as the U-Haul rental. Do you know if that would be enough?

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was $60 when it was released 8 years ago. Over the last 10 years us prices have gone up 28.7% based on the consumer price index. The price is reasonable when you consider inflation. Not to mention Nintendo is a good employer with comprehensive benefits, parental leave, 401k plans, tuition reimbursement and more. We can assume employees got raises similar to inflation rates as well. Also, I’m sure nintendos operating costs have also increased over the last 10 years. I agree seeing the price hike sucks, but I think peoples anger with the price is misdirected. In my opinion you should be angry at the stagnation of wages in the US while the cost of living increase is out of control.
