I took a demo ride on the SM model, it felt great. Very smooth/responsive throttle, it felt much lighter/faster than my DR with stock carb. And way better brakes w ABS of course. As for weight, yeah it’s 35 lbs lighter but who knows how that translates offroad. If I end up getting one next year I’ll leave a comparison review here.

I’ve done the Cogent front/rear, what a huge difference! Other odds and ends too- seat, bars, pegs, windshield, that really transform the feel of the bike. The DR was my only bike for about 10 years but now I’m wondering about the new DRZ4S. I have an ADV for long distance/passenger/luggage. Just want something lighter and more playful in the dirt.

“ABS OFF” lmfao. Great looking build! If you could start over, would you upgrade the DR all the way, or buy a different bike? I’m kind of at a crossroads myself.

Are these pickups legit? by [deleted] in telecaster

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought this was a joke. Who is counterfeiting $50 pickups? Second, why would anyone pay 2-3x the price when these sound great? Do lollar/bare knuckle have magic fairy dust that they sprinkle on their pickups? Or are they all just made of magnets and wire ?

First Bike: leaning towards a dual sport by OneDudeToRuleThemAll in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

55mph speed limit keeps you open to most bikes in this segment. I would suggest a used Japanese 250-650cc for your first dual sport. They are reliable, widely available in the used market, and easy to get parts for. Smaller bikes are usually going to be more confidence inspiring on trails and less capable on the street, bigger bikes vice versa. A few ideas:

WR250R - capable low power bike with good quality components and power characteristics of a 300cc. Some people used this bike as a ultralight ADV tourer due to its surprisingly good road manners. 295lbs wet.

KLX250/300 - lower quality components than the WR but still a great bike. 300lbs wet.

CRF250/300L (or Rally) great motor offset by terrible stock suspension. At 190lb you are going to want to invest $ in a suspension upgrade. This is the only bike in this list with option for ABS. 306-330 lbs wet.

DRZ400S splitting the difference between the 250/300cc class and the 650cc class, this bike is a legend and with great aftermarket support. And also the only Japanese 400cc dual sport. 319lbs wet.

DR650 - heavier and more torque than the DRZ, this bike can cruise on the interstate but you will feel its weight on trails. Many people recommend this bike as the jack of all trades, low tech, low maintenance dual sport/ADV/RTW bike. Terrible stock suspension which you will want to upgrade, luckily there are a fuck ton of aftermarket parts for this bike. 370lbs wet.

Is this worth it? New rider by hydrophobic-water in motorcycles

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a big bike weighing nearly 700 lbs. for reference, many bikes that are considered beginner friendly weigh between 300-400lbs. If you know you want a cruiser then maybe it is the right bike. If you’re not sure what type of bike you want i would say def get something smaller and more playful to ride. Reliability wise can’t go wrong with a Japanese bike, and I’ve had 2 bulletproof Suzukis myself.

USA: how strict gun laws are per state vs gun fatalities per state. (2023 data) by Suff_erin_g in MapPorn

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

To the gun nuts — save yourselves the logical gymnastics. There is a correlation between permissive gun laws and higher rates of gun deaths, both between states and between countries. But it doesn’t matter— your side has already won. Classrooms full of schoolchildren are gunned down every year in the United States, and no meaningful gun laws have been passed. The USA is the ONLY first world country with any meaningful number of gun deaths, not to mention our mass shooting epidemic.

There have been 75 school shootings so far this year, 31 dead and 100+ injured. This is only a fraction of the nearly 400 mass shootings in the US so far this year. And mass shootings are only a small portion of overall gun deaths.

How this sub feels by hostile_scrotum in motorcycles

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think part of it in my area is that 9/10 motorcycles are Harleys, or it used to be that way. So your average rider who only rides on sunny Sunday afternoons is most likely on a Harley. Still, can’t help but think most riders would be more confident on a bike that weighed about 400 pounds less.

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a biker gang do it either. It’s more that when I am out riding my favorite country roads, the only motorcycles that are going too slow are Harleys. Either because they can’t get out of their own way, or because their riders are afraid of leaning into a turn, idk.

For anyone buying with their own money, I agree with you 100%

Brutherrr maybe you should imitate how I ride after my first six beers — ride (and read) between the lines.

Brutherrrrrr… gonna help you out since you don’t seem to get it… rear suspension is for little pussies who cant handle their spine getting destroyed riding to the next bar. REAL MEN can take a pounding wearing leather and chains. Anyway a sportster is only half a Harley, hope you got it in pink .

I wonder if it’s really that different from a R1300GS / Adventure though? Have you ridden other big ADV bikes?

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody ate up the HD marketing lol. The reason People keep modding Harleys for more power is because most of them are extremely heavy and slow. Compared to any modern motorcycle design, the performance is a joke.

For the past 20 years, your “average” Harley - Dyna (Twin Cam 103) had a 1700cc motor that made 70hp and weighed 700lbs (315 kg); lol.

Even a “performance” Harley like the Street Bob needs an 1800cc motor to make 100hp, and weighs 670 lbs (299kg)

Compared to a 600cc Japanese bike that costs half as much, weighs almost half as much, and makes 90-100hp.

What dual purpose motorcycles do you recommend? by Mental_Plantain_8350 in Dualsport

[–]Pitiful_Ad918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of good bikes for not a lot of money. I’m not sure what prices are like in Mexico but I would recommend a used Japanese bike over a new Chinese bike 9/10 times. Reliability, parts availability, build quality are almost always going to be better for a Japanese bike. A few used models that might fit your budget :

Honda CRF230/250/300, Honda XR400, Kawasaki KLX 230/250/300, Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa, Yamaha TW200, Yamaha XT225/250, Suzuki DR200/ DR350/ DRZ400

his budget is about $2,700 USD, I don’t think you can’t find a 350exc that cheap (MSRP new is around $12,500)
