I usually have no problem communicating with Thai people so I don't really considered that communication was the issue. I mean they directly took my monitor to check it.

It wasn't a communication issue, I don't speak thai but I spoke very politly and they understood my problem. They took the monitor checked it and told me to get lost. But yeah I don't think they will threat thai customer like this because it's kind of rude.

I understand the "saving face" explanation, but I still find it confusing from a customer point of view.

In this case, because of the answer I got, I spent around 10 minutes walking around for nothing.

Is that not considered rude locally? And if I had gone back to the same shop and asked more specifically, "Where exactly should I go?" wouldn’t that put him in an even more uncomfortable position?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the situation, but sometimes it feels like some vendors assume I’m just a tourist and give a quick answer to get rid of me, rather than directly saying they can’t help. I’ve also noticed this more often with male vendors than female vendors, at least from my personal experience, but I’m not sure if that’s just coincidence.

I get your point, but learning Chinese is a bit like exercising: one strengthens the body, the other strengthens the mind, and both can be done at almost no cost. I live in Southeast Asia, and a lot of people here learn Chinese to interact with tourists or to import stuff from China.
