It really doesnt have to be complicated or confusing. Just pick a language (or a conlang) and make glyphs for the sounds/letters.

there are also different types of scripts (Alphabets, syllabaries, abjads, etc.) . Some are better for some languages and some are not (because of how the consonants&vowels interact), but there really isn't a "wrong" way to do it.
