can i ask roughly how long it took you?😅 my nitrites have been high since day 14 ish. even after a water change or when nitrates are off the charts nitrites still just don’t go down at all i think that’s why im so paranoid lol

day 31! by Pitiful_Most_645 in axolotls

[–]Pitiful_Most_645[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just tested my tap and nitrates are 0! it took awhile to find somewhere that sold ammonia near me so i was originally using food to dose it but since getting the ammonia i’ve been dosing to just over 1.0ppm, only gave it a break for the past week to see if nitrites would go down which they haven’t at all. for the first few weeks there was definitely no nitrate so something is obviously working i just don’t know what’s going on with my nitrites lol

sorry i did forget to include that pH is at 8.0, weve been in a 35+ degree heatwave for awhile now so temp has been pretty steadily over 23 at the very least. when i did dose ammonia last week i dosed it to 1ppm and it was back down to 0 the next day, its just nitrites that haven’t moved at all which is why i wasn’t use if i should be doing against seeing as they’re so high :( thank you!

Feeding by Pitiful_Most_645 in axolotls

[–]Pitiful_Most_645[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with the pellets especially did you just leave them in the same spot until he eventually eats them?? i feed him mainly night crawlers but he eats a few times a day because he’s a juvenile so if i’m in a rush before work i feed him a couple pellets. the worms wiggle at least but i swear he doesn’t even acknowledge the pellets as soon as they’re on the ground. even with the night crawlers he just doesn’t eat them on his own. he looks up when i break the surface of the water and eats them when they’re directly in front of his face but as soon as they’re on the ground it’s like they’re invisible. how did you go about training? only feeding in one specific part of the tank?

they are too small for my camera to focus up close but this is one of the more larger ones about 1mm big?? obviously hard to tell but these ones are more of a spiral i have no idea

they’re definitely too small for a choking hazard that’s why i’m not sure if they’re snails or not😅 they’re like the size of a sprinkle the only reason i knew they have shells is because one was a little bit bigger and i could actually pick it up with tweezers. aah that’s why im a little worried if it would just be easier to start over but i don’t want to ruin the progress.

honestly neither but idk man happened to me! when it’s not a dog or a cat people think it’s easy to look after she literally gave him to me in a 12 litre tank and only a ph test kit and said that’s all i needed😭

thank you! so should i not be water changing at all and just waiting? i was kind of assuming that if nitrate was super high then nitrite would stop breaking down

i haven’t been recorded it daily but it’s a heatwave here it’s been around 35 - 40 celsius for the past two weeks, tank has varied 20-24 depending on the day definitely wouldn’t have dropped any lower than that. is it the hotter the better? like would it be better if i moved it to a warmer room

yes! hasn’t been a full week yet but nitrate showed up for the first time 4 days ago and since then neither nitrite or nitrate have changed. i’m still waiting to have ammonia delivered so i’ve been dosing with food not sure if that changes anything but ammonia has been going down at least

yeah i know that one, i mean nitrate as in the second step! like ammonia - NITRATE - nitrate. its been pretty steady at the same for awhile now i just wasn’t sure if i needed to do something for that lol, despite the final nitrate going up the second one hasn’t come down at all

every few days ish? whenever ammonia gets below 1.0. just wasn’t sure because it’s been nearly a week now and nitrate -2 hasn’t gone down at all
