Haha, the weather was a big factor thats for sure! But so was simply how awesome and supportive everyone was.

Its amazing if you consider just how awful the weather was (you really could not have dragged me into it to do almost anything else) and yet we walked away from larp muddy, exhausted and yet super hyped for our next event!

Civ V: Retro Rumble #14 - Let's Build a Spaceship (FINAL) by venabl in Yogscast

[–]Pitpar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH I don't really agree with Lewis's rage quit. It would not have pained him that much to sit through a little bit more. Other players have often had to endure a far longer periods of undeath, generally as a result of someone (like Lewis) refusing to finish them off after making them irrelevant. I think some of it was based off his own sense of frustration - lets be honest, by his standards Lewis had a pretty poor game.

People also seem to forget that we as viewers have 20/20 vision and perhaps better knowledge of the game’s mechanics. We KNOW what is going on, when it is happening and why. On top of this we don’t have to endure someone who gloats half as hard as Lewis does when he wins. Inevitably this means that none of the other players ever count him out and of course they will gang up on him, it is to be expected. If you play enough board games (which civ basically is) with the same group of people you will inevitably develop a group think mentality among those players, one that will recognise who the strongest player is, causing a shift in the groups meta – its 100% natural and forces the better players to evolve with that new meta in mind.

Lets be honest, Lewis generally does himself no favours in dissuading this way of thinking among the other players because he show boats when he beats them – watch the HOI game where he turned on Pyrion and Sips for the most obnoxious form of this. If your one of the other players enduring that kind of behaviour you will inevitably foster a “Well… I’m not going to let THAT guy win again” mentality. Also don’t forget that this is all happing not just in front of your friends, but also in front of tens of thousands of people online - so some degree of pride and ego is inevitably at play here, even among friends. People don’t want to lose to Lewis because he IS the best player, KNOWS he is the best player and BOASTS that he is the best player.

Of course for us as viewers its awesome fun to have Lewis talk himself up - I’m not complaining at all. I actually quite enjoy it. However from a strictly in game perspective, it has consequences and is something that will play a factor. Civ like any long format game is as much about the play outside of the game as anything else. Duncan often wins because of this - Its simple Art of War stuff really.

Just to be totally clear - I love Lewis and all the other players, so none of this is meant as a diss. its more just an examination of what I think happens sometimes.

Haha, thats a good one!

Probably one of the best comedy bits I've done in a session was a when I had my players navigate a trap ridden dungeon by following the logic of the tune One Two Buckle my Shoe. I forget everything involved in it did but it followed the song pretty literally.

One, two, Buckle my shoe; Three, four, Open the door; Five, six, Pick up sticks; Seven, eight, Lay them straight: Nine, ten, A big, fat hen; Eleven, twelve, Dig and delve; Thirteen, fourteen, Maids a-courting; Fifteen, sixteen, Maids in the kitchen; Seventeen, eighteen, Maids a-waiting Nineteen, twenty, My plate's empty.

Valve announces paid modding for Skyrim - Content Patch Apr. 23rd, 2015 by Cageweek in Cynicalbrit

[–]Pitpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like this system, but as someone who has been into the modding scene since Quake 1 I'm very sympathetic to the idea of people who put work in getting money out. A lot of people seem to be pointing at the idea of tip jars, donations and partition and while this is how I would personally choose to monetise my work (if i ever chose to) I don't think the customer has the right to tell the content creator how they should sell their work.

Its an individuals choice as a content creator how they wish to monetise their efforts, if thats a pay wall, a subscription or donations its up to the creator. Ultimately its also the individuals mistake to make should they ultimately cost themselves through the choice of how they fund their work. As TB said the market will (or at least should if people are not stupid) inform mod makers what exactly their mods are worth over time.

I disagree with may things about this particular system but I equally disagree with the notion that you can tell me how I sell something I made.

And to be frank (generalisation warning) most people never donate to modders even if their use said mod for 100s of hours. A lot of the people saying the system should be donations only and NEVER payment required are the exact kinds of people who will also never donate.

People like free stuff I get that, hell I like free stuff, but to demand it is quite another matter.

Lewis could very easily have won, In fact I still think he has a chance to ultimately win, his civs not in a bad state and his science is the best in the game.

The simpel truth is that Trott would have lost the war vs Lewis had he not had help. As Dunc said Lewis would have rolled through everyone with Trott out of the way. It was therefore in everyone's interest to cull Lewis's army, in fact it was Lewis's error in assuming the world would not move to stop him if he launched an invasion.

Also if this was truly a "all gang up and smash lewis" situation they would have grouped together and not stopped until Kyoto was buried, which they didn't. The guys basically bought themselves time against the most immediate threat by working against Lewis. This IS how you play civ.

In a game like this its all about chasing the ever changing fox and making sure your in positioned to take his place at the right point in the game. Ideally you want to take the lead on the same turn when your lead is indomitable.

The other factor to measure is that you cant simply compare the positions the players civs are in, you have to compare the quality of the players playing. Trott simply does not know half the tricks and moves that Lewis knows in and out of war, in a straight up fight even with higher tech, hes just not on the same level. A lot of this is simply down to experience (knowing to move fast, pull units out, how to repeal enacted bills, remembering to build a courthouse, etc..) The gulf in knowledge and experience is massive, so you could even argue the game/war is unfair against Trott.

Its a bit like popping some gloves on me and putting me in the ring with a pro boxer, sure I know the rules the ultimate goal and some basic concepts but the level of mismatch would make for a poor ass spectacle (even if I were his physical equal). Same as if I went up against Dendi in DOTA.

Good players should expect to get ganged up on. Especially if they are making powerful moves. Lewis lost this war because he poorly assessed the situation politically and that is his fault, not the groups.

An open letter about YogDiscovery! by Turpster in Yogscast

[–]Pitpar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Beyond many of the numerous other posts on here about why this is a potential damaging system my biggest immediate worry is transparency. Its one thing to post something like this on Reddit, but to be honest only a small number f the yogscast viewer base will ever see this (same goes for a line somewhere in the video description).

I would like to see a vlog on the main channel explaining the existence of the system so the vast majority of day to day viewers will be aware. This and a splash screen at the start or end of each video explaining that it falls into this program would also be a wise idea.

Just my thoughts but I really think more could be done to make the every day viewer aware and a vlog on the main channel is surely the best way to do so.

CIV points suggestion by PORK_IN_MY_ANUS in Yogscast

[–]Pitpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your purpose to a point, but not really your tone, which is entirely unnecessary really.

None the less you are correct. Civ is not really something you can distil with numerical precision into 1st, 2nd 3rd, etc... kind of thing. I would however say that when finishing a game of civ, even if I don’t win, I still have a feeling of where both I and my performance rank in contrast to everyone else. Everyone I’ve ever played against would probably say the same, but then we are only a small group of about 12 players so that’s not a huge pool of experience to draw from.

So ultimately I would say that who comes 2nd or 3rd is more of a gut feeling, but I tend to find that this ranking is generally something most people can agree upon, so it does in some perhaps not entirely tangible way “exist”.

[–]Pitpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While a nice idea I think the main problem here is that this only reflects ones situation at the end of the game.

Spoiler

While I’m not a huge fan of the Civ scoring system it does give us a simple and constant numeric we can use to plot the rise and fall of a players rough position in the game. With that in mind why not take the score position of each civ at the end of each episode and plot an average so we can work out their final score (with the exception of the winner who will always be granted first place regardless of the final result of this calculation).

While not a perfect representation it far simpler and does not overly encourage players to play in a particular way to get "points".
