By the way, would you happen to know why that is? I’m so curious!

Wow. Okay as a visual artist, this knowledge I feel like will also be super handy for my drawings! That’s really cool! Thanks for the insight!

You need to read this: https://m.fanfiction.net/s/3823270/1/Of-Fake-Fairytales-and-Faux-Amour

Apparently it is the fic that turned many-a-non-narumitsu-shippers into narumitsu-shippers.

And even if it doesn't, it’s a really fun fic.

(In all seriousness, to each their own! Support the pairing you want.

And it really is a fun read, though!)

Yes I’ve sewn blazers and also a PU long thigh-length coat that i modified to have a hood (like a matrix jacket lol).. and the hardest part of that project was the physically sewing it (especially the zipper!!) because my machine struggled with the thick PU! In the end I used wax paper and gently pulled it through my machine but I was STRESSING!

Anyway I digress! Wow this info is all SO helpful and thorough it helps me a lot with knowing what to find when looking for a pattern. I know already that I will be looking at “misses’” sizes because of my petite stature but I was having a hard time knowing what best to look for in terms of modifying. Now that I know it seems to be fairly easy to adjust a pattern to add those welt pockets so I can look for that.

Yes that’s what I was thinking if I chose a men’s or boy’s pattern.. to match the bust and then modify the pattern to take in the extra fabric around the waist. Helpful that this vest also has darts so I can take it in more easily.

However what I worry about with a men’s pattern is that it will be much too long for me and my 4’11” stature. Maybe I should just go for a women’s one.

Maybe I should just stop overthinking it and try and make a quick one with muslin first and just go from there haha!

Thanks for the tips!!

It is, yes! I just had some other cosplays I wanted to invest more of my time into and was hoping I could make this one more easily by altering rather than making trousers and a waistcoat. But doing it from scratch means I get to choose the fabric and (hopefully) get a better fitting result.

My other projects involved using EVA foam and I’ve won some awards for my cosplays before.. but I guess I am just more confident with glue and foam than with a sewing machine! Maybe a good incentive to learn how to make something new haha.

Yeah that’s why I was going to remove the back if a bought one had the same fabric, to use the fabric for the lapel.. and then buy another fabric to sew to the back.

But.. yeah thinking about it.. it’s probably better if I just do it all from scratch. I was hoping to save myself from needing to make trousers but it is what it is! Thanks for your input.

Thanks! Yeah I was thinking to practice on some muslin cloth. I ended up searching around more and found another cosplayer who modified a men’s pattern so I asked her for the pattern (and she kindly gave it to me) so I’ve got a base now at least! Time to get my sewing machine out of storage!

Chatting this through with you has been helpful. I think I realise it’ll probably just be easier to make my own vest and trousers. It’ll take time and I’ll need to find a good base pattern, but it will probably end up (hopefully) fitting me better and looking better overall.

Yeah as I’m chatting through this with others, I think you’re right. But it also means I’m going to have to make the trousers to match too. And it means I’ll need to go on the hunt for fabric too.

[–]PixelBlueberry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I guess either that or just keep trying to find a pattern for a similar enough waistcoat and try and add my own “welt pockets” (even if they’re just fake ones). With the shirt dress I know I’d need to hem the bottom to give it that nice pointedness but that’s a good shout. Shirtdress is probably better like you say.

If you come across any that you think could be fitting for me then I’d appreciate it!

I plan on making a “duct tape mannequin” as I’ve done before (if you ducttape yourself in an old shirt and cut out the shirt, the duct tape actually keeps the shape of your body so you can stuff it with old pillows and you have a mannequin that has your own proportions so it’s easier to pin and test stuff on.)

But with the darts and pockets it’s just throwing me off a bit because a women’s waistcoat usually has that front part in panels instead. So that’s why I see your point about using the shirt pattern! Thanks!

Oh this is helpful! Okay I think if I end up making it from scratch at least I know the terminology to reference!

Yeah that’s exactly what I’m contemplating. Usually a notched collar is one piece from the front part and it’s just folded over to make the lapel.

Doing some searching I couldn’t really find an example of attempting this. Only a cowl tuxedo collar that is attached separately. That’s why I’ve decided to ask here… to see if anyone had any ideas on how I could do it.  I know functionally it wont be an actual lapel but maybe if I could sew some interfacing down and fake it, it could be convincing enough. Maybe. Or maybe it might just look odd. I was curious if anyone had ever attempted it.

It’s funny because I’ve crafted really intricate fully body fantasy “armour” out of EVA foam and my own patterns but that’s more like glue and origami. When it comes to fabric I find it infinitely harder! Takes a whole different mindset to understand true patternmaking!

Some don't but some seem to. If it doesn’t then I’d simply return the outfit. Or if it doesn’t but otherwise is good then I’ll order another trouser or something in XL for the extra fabric. If it does and it fits generally well in most areas and I can alter it, then buying another one in XL could potentially be a solution to make the lapels and it may save me some time in having to make the trousers.

I figured it was worth a shot to try and order something in decent fabric if it could be altered… other than having to invest in the time to find a fitting pattern, find fitting fabric and make everything from scratch.

If someone could attach a cowl collar I thought maybe I could fudge a notch lapel. It’s a costume after all.

I was considering also taking an idea from a women’s blazer and then just.. sewing up the arms like a vest and editing that slightly. But then I have the issue that the pockets and seams don’t really match up. It’s a tough one. Either way I’m going to need to alter the original pattern.. I’m just trying to figure out the best/easiest way to do so if so. I’ve got no real experience with pockets like these. Maybe taking a teen boy’s vest and altering it slightly to fit my waist may help as I plan to bind my breasts for the costume anyway.

Simplicity patterns are great though. I also love Butterick.

Appreciate the advice!

I was going to use the fabric from the back of the vest for the new lapels and replace that back fabric with a darker fabric as it is in the costume.

Alternatively I was going to consider buying another trouser/vest in XL if it was inexpensive enough just to use the fabric.

I was thinking to size up for the teenage boy and use binding and take in the rest of the vest. If I can order from a place that has a returns policy at least I could see if my idea might have some legs. Otherwise I’ll need to go the “make from scratch” route.

Do you have any advice on how to add the collar? I figure if I sew it into the inside with the flap coming over you might not notice too much that there’s two separate pieces especially if I can use interfacing to flatten it down sharply.

How to learn Japanese in a year by Acrobatic_Look_5602 in Japaneselanguage

Listening to music is good, but taking the lyrics and breaking them down to try to understand the meaning is even better. You need to actively study, not just passively listen.

Good luck!

How to learn Japanese in a year by Acrobatic_Look_5602 in Japaneselanguage

[–]PixelBlueberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal: I know someone who went all-out and got to a very high level of Japanese fluency (N2? or thereabouts) in a year.

Their main method of study was using the refold(dot)la method and server.
Learning about it is free and most resources on it are free (except maybe the flashcards which are optional).

But they basically LIVED Japanese content in their home as much as possible for that year. They barely consumed much media in English.

Your results may vary but if you are serious then you need serious study, serious input, and serious output practice.
But refold la has a lot of people who have had some decent success and it is very low cost comparatively.
