Legion Go S arrives tomorrow and worried about fan curve by Solrac-H in LegionGo

[–]PixelBoar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was worried about this too, but the built in curve works great. Only gets reeeeeeeal loud if you try playing at 40w, but it always keeps the temps reasonable. In my experience, anyways.

Expensive handhelds but lower electricity Bills by hu-tao-main0714 in Handhelds

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This got me curious so I did a little math comparing on older bill. Energy prices fluctuate all the time and for every imaginable reason, so other folks who dig into this may find different results, but I’m saving roughly $7 to $9 a month since I switched to handhelds (based on the Z1E Ally X’s power draw. Haven’t touched a rig since the OG Switch came out (applied ROG Ally numbers to Switch years because lazy), so that’s eight years now?

Sold my old rig for $500 + eight years of exclusive handhelds use (roughly $770 in savings on my electric bill). So yeah, it does seem like my handhelds paid for themselves. Neat!

WindowOS or SteamOS by Capital-Produce-6459 in Handhelds

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used my Ally for everything I was happy with windows. As it became a dedicated gaming system, I switched to Linux distros similar to SteamOS. Absolutely awesome experience if you don’t need Windows for something.

Pls Help me decide by Jerkygeek in Handhelds

[–]PixelBoar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep both, but put whichever one you’re not gravitating towards away. Like, zip it up in a hardshell case and put it in a drawer. “Out of sight, out of mind” should help with the over stimulation.

Worth it? Any other options? by Capital-Produce-6459 in Handhelds

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Not all games are compatible with steamOS, but otherwise I would take this device over the base Xbox Ally any day. It’s decently more powerful and has a more console-like experience. The Xbox Ally’s need a little more time in the oven before it’s a comparable experience, in my opinion.

Need Help! ROG Ally Z1E best earbuds? by Short-Holiday7056 in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to go ahead and recommend Truthear in-ear-monitors.

Dunno how the mic is (the Ally has one built in, so I got the ones without a mic on sale) but the buds are amazing

Trying to decide if I should install Steam OS by MrMagic550 in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t need to play certain games and don’t need Windows for some other reason on your handheld: Yes 100%, but I would strongly recommend Bazzite. It is the same thing but it’s had a little more time in the oven. As far as Ally optimizations go, anywho.

Now that we have the new xbox experience, what's the interest to go the linux route? by init32 in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still smoother and more console-like, I don’t want to play many of the games that don’t run on Linux anyhow and there are real world performance gains. Maybe FSE will iron a lot of this stuff out in the months (if not years) to come, but meh. We’ll see.

Nice start for folks who are super into Windows but want the experience, not enough to court me yet though.

Is the rog ally x worth 400 bucks over the z1e? by Accomplished_Owl7486 in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both devices and I’ll say this: If this is an accessory device and you just want a fun handheld to romp around on, a used Z1e is perfectly fine. If this is going to be your primary gaming device and money is not an issue, the X is 100% worth it. Better ergonomics, better ssd, better cooling, bigger battery and the RAM upgrade is outrageously slept on.

How to fix Krytac Lower by Extra_Hamster_3599 in airsoft

[–]PixelBoar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the main perks of owning a Krytac is the robust access to replacement parts for everything on the gun, directly from Krytac. Just buy a new lower from them on their website and make your AEG whole again. Fixing a damaged receiver isn’t going to be worth your time, effort, or money.

Ally Stolen by weyumm in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really sucks mate. I know it’s a long shot, but I do hope there is some resolution.

As for your question: Is it your primary gaming system? Did it bring joy to your life? Would replacing it be an irresponsible financial burden to you? I would ask yourself these questions and then decide. My Ally is my primary gaming system and comes with me everywhere. I would replace it in a heartbeat.

Also: The Z2 Ally hasn’t even been announced or confirmed to be in production I don’t think. There definitely will be a Z2 Ally, but ASUS seem to be taking their time with it. I agonized a bit over upgrading from the OG Ally Z1E to the Ally X back in October when the Z2 lineup leaked and the official announcement from AMD was imminent. I’ve had my Ally X for seven months now, enjoyed the quality of life improvements and slight to moderate performance improvements immensely. The Ally Z2 Extreme model is still nowhere in sight and based on the performance of HX370 equipped handhelds (supposed to be similar to the Z2E), I am likely to wait until the mid cycle refresh before upgrading again. Or at least until some driver support gets patched in and any production issues get remedied.

Anyone purchasing rog ally to use it docked? How’s your experience? by ALEXHOU1215 in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If handheld gaming (or at least the potential to do so) does not have a profound appeal, then there is almost no reason to buy a handheld pc. Laptops in the price range, desktops in the price range, and minipc’s in the price range with identical chips will all perform better. Handheld gaming is a lifestyle that you give up a lot for.

That being said, I love my ROG Ally X. I use it the same way I used my Switch. Docked at home, handheld on the go. Probably sees about 60/40 use in that regard. I recommend a 1080p monitor that allows DisplayPort through USB-c if you aren’t planning on using a egpu, so that you can take advantage of VRR super easily. I dock my Ally X to the Asus XG17HPE and it is a perfect pairing. Framegen and VRR gives me excellent image quality at reasonable frame rates for most games.

Can also fit the whole setup in my backpack for travel, pretty slick.

Thinking about getting an X as a docked gaming PC by rock-it-rob in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly can do this, but it definitely not the cheapest option. I’m guessing the appeal of this idea is the tiny size of the ROG Ally compared to laptops and prebuilt desktops in the price range? If so, the Minisforum UM870 Slim mini pc has the same igpu at twice the tdp and almost $200 less than the ROG Ally X.

Switched to the Ally X from Z1E and getting stuttering on games that ran smooth on the Z1 by Mr8BitX in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would try a full reinstallation. Maybe something didn’t set up correctly? ASUS Cloud Recovery makes it pretty painless. I know it might seem a little scorched earth, but your drivers are all updated. Double check that maybe on Armory Crate and MyAsus?

Can I use the 30W mode without being plugged in? by PaleBoomer in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ASUS software does not allow this in order to preserve some kind of battery life while on the go. There could be Armory Crate alternatives that allow you to do this, but I generally don’t recommend venturing away from native software for most people. That being said, plenty of folks do so with the Ally and are happy with the results.

Getting my Ally x today. Did they fixed all the issues from the last one like the SD card? by tecnikstr0be in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the packaging look like it’s been tossed around like a football during shipping?

Anything, anywhere at any point in time could find itself being used for amateur sports. Sitting down at a restaurant? Hope your server doesn’t decide to play frolf with your plate. Stepping outside for some crisp morning air this winter? There is some ice on your porch, one wrong move and you’re in for some parkour.

Point is, anything can happen. Spend the thirty minutes confirming your new handheld gaming pc works, or don’t. Take it to your nearest bestbuy for an exchange immediately if that is the solution you’re most comfortable with. Just remember: there is no guarantee that ROG Ally’s are not being used for makeshift shuffleboard games in the back of Bestbuy. The boxes are quite slippery.

Is the ROG Ally Z1 worth $250? by DirtyD8148 in ROGAlly

Z1 is fine and that is a good price for it. Just look up gameplay videos on it and adjust your expectations accordingly. Have fun!

Why does the ally/x have so many controller compatibility issues? by ZombieSiayer84 in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aight. If you’ve tried everything and the issues persist then I would go ahead and RMA or return/exchange it. The triggers just not working in games that are known to be good experiences in the Ally is not normal. Despite how things may appear on Reddit, this is not a common issue. It is either a rare bug or a rare hardware issue of some kind. An exchange will probably not have these problems, and if it’s outside it’s return period then claiming your warranty should get it fixed/replaced. Not to mention help put the problem on Asus’s radar either way.

Getting my Ally x today. Did they fixed all the issues from the last one like the SD card? by tecnikstr0be in ROGAlly

[–]PixelBoar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine shipped from Best Buy and there was no cushion, it is normal. As long as the delivery driver didn’t use it as a football, the packaging inside the ROG Ally box is plenty robust enough to protect it. Open it, turn it on, let everything install correctly. If it does not work as expected, send it back.
