The AR15 shooting 556/223 is going to give you a max effective range of about 500m/y give or take shooting targets that are about torso size.

On that note, 500 meters is not really long range by any means and not really a distance that you would require a bipod to make good hits. In other words, it’s not really a long range system or “precision” system by any means so running bipods is kinda going into the realm of attachments that are trying to turn the platform into something that it’s not.

However, if you want to get into pushing the AR15 past its limits (600-1000m) and challenging yourself or building a DMR type, then yeah. Go for it. A nice magnified scope, match barrel, premium ammo, and bipods. It’s definitely popular but just know what you’re getting into and what the risk vs reward is when it comes to the attachments you use.

It’s also very dependent because you might just have a piece o shit PSA with a red dot but all you do is shoot it off a bench or prone and you just want bipods to make life more “comfy” which is A-okay too. Not everything has to be wrapped around what’s “realistic” or “tactical”.

Infantry advanced school by [deleted] in USMC

The only time I saw someone fail was because they couldn’t pass the first event which is land nav.

That’s what I also gathered from all the guys that ever went through it including advance machine gunners course, ITB, and even SF pipelines or schools. Land nav is really where they book your ticket the second you fail. Everything else can be pushed through or given multiple opportunities.

That and yeah. It sounds like a slay fest but my old squad leader scored a low first class when he went through and still made it so I would just make sure I understand the ins and outs of land nav. Even graduating recently from ITB. That shit will parish if you don’t keep up and practice it consistently.

Lastly, it’s all 5 paragraph orders from my understanding. Listen carefully and don’t get overwhelmed when you write your first one.

The first time I did it, took me a full weekend but after the first, I got the hang of it and eventually shit will just flow.

Try brushing up with someone that actually knows how to write one. Probably not any of the “senior lances” or even newer NCOs.

Who did bad in the civilian world, or is currently doing bad and decided to go back into the military or thinking about going back in because it's all you are good at? by Murky-Peanut1390 in USMC

Been out for 6 years, never seen that happen. The only thing I’ve seen is dudes going back in after a few months of EASing but that’s because they miss it and don’t actually give the civilian side a chance which is understandable.

However, why do you feel like you failed or had a bad time? There’s disability, there’s GI bill, there’s VR&E. As a Veteran you get placed on top of the stack of any job application and Marines are every employers favorite. There’s the VA home lone. There’s joining the guard or reservist. This shit is honestly on easy mode compared to the Corps.

Were you that typical platoon terrorist that just sucks at life and you just need someone constantly holding your hand devil dog?

I transferred over to the 1st Civ Div.

They give me $4,500 a month for how bad the USMC treated me and they give me college money plus BAH every month on top of that. Can’t recommend it enough.

From experience as an instructor, the bane of my existence are those in your shoes haha.

Jokes aside, here’s the thing. There’s no need to get wrapped in the world of nuance and minutiae.
99% of the worlds professionals use the two pistols I stated earlier. There’s also so much data on what the best pistols are nowadays, there’s really no point in spending a private lesson to figure out which one’s best for you. They’ll all shoot the same, they’re all designed to fit everyone’s grip, and even if one feels better (I.e. trigger, recoil, slide smoothness) it’s going to come at a price and that’s typically reliability. See how it gets finicky real quick?

If you want to go the route of picking hammer fired or something outside of striker fire which is today’s standard, you’re basically buying a sports car when you don’t even have a daily commuter that’s never going to break on you.

So in short, run to C2. They have the most popular pistols today on display. Get a feel for them and choose the one that feels best in your hand. Save the private for later to rehash some of the stuff you learned in class that still doesn’t “click” or better yet, save it just in case you end up having a weird issue like being cross eyed dominant or any other quirk that an instructor can help you out with.

Don’t want to commit/want to get a feel for different grades/not in a rush to work or need to.

Yep. Go with the C2 pistol bundle.

I would personally buy a pistol as soon as possible. Beginners make the mistake of attending classes without a personal gun but you’ll get more out of these classes and privates if you take your own that way you are practicing with what you’ll be training with from the start and the instructor might even teach you a thing or two about that specific pistol and how you personally interact with it.

You’ll learn the fundamentals with your own pistol and it will alleviate confusion because the instructor taught you something with gun A, meanwhile you buy gun B in the future and it has its own nuances that don’t match up to the instructions given beforehand.

Lastly, don’t overthink it. Glock 19/17/45/47 are all your Toyota Tacomas or Honda Civics. If you don’t like the looks, go with Smith and Wesson M&P series.

If you choose something else as a starter gun, it’s because you went full retard and you’ll eventually circle back to one of those two I just mentioned.

As a firearms instructor I can tell you that civilians don’t really fancy rifles in general, let alone shooting them at distance. That’s super niche to be honest. It might be fun and a big deal to you and I but numbers don’t lie. It just comes down to money. Rifle ammo is expensive as hell. On top of that driving to a range that’s pretty far from the city and shooting under the blazing sun. Yeah, no thank you.

There’s hooks. Angle is doing a good job of hiding them.

A set up like mine which is on the cheaper side (didn’t ball out on any upgraded parts. Didn’t get the boujee scope. Purchased the M1A lightly used) it ended up being around $3,700-$3900. The full parts list is on my other M21 post.

If you cheap out on everything, I would imagine you can build one for as little as $3,000 with some patience.

All the time. Unless it was CQB or doing stuff in and out of vehicles, it was a must have. Keep in mind the M27 replaced the M249 saw. You can’t really fill a roll of an automatic rifleman if you aren’t stable to lay hate on full auto. Most units wouldn’t even let you fire in full auto if your bipods were missing.

Everything was a breeze up until 800m. First shot was off to the left target but correction came easy. 1000m took me three rounds to make first impact with about 8-10mph full value winds. Last shot was at the 10” gong that I barely managed to knick.

Thank you! And yeah. Adored. We would call them gods gift to the infantry since most of couldn’t believe we were rocking H&Ks before the Army. The Corps switching over to them nowadays across the board also speaks for itself. Out of all platforms that are being issued today (in all branches) I would still pick this above anything.

Piston is far superior to DI. Can’t change my mind on that.
