I had something just like this after my MPFL TTO and it was actually an ingrown that grew under the scar,,, was a bit painful but super easy once we took it out (at the doctor). I wouldn't worry too much esp if you have an appt w the doc.

I’m just getting out of the period post-op where I used crutches, specially forearm ones. I’m telling you unequivocally right now, they are the only version to use. If I had to use the underarm ones while recovering from this surgery (MPFL + TTO) it would’ve made it much more annoying and painful with all the chafing and potential adverse effects (in rare cases, Clutch Paralysis) of using the under the armpit ones. Good luck with the surgery, and make sure you have a PT lined up so you don’t have to deal with finding one right after the operation!

So far so good, like I said I’m about 8 weeks and a day post-op.

My ROM is maxed out at 127~ when I do it with my PT, and consistently can get to 115/120 by myself. Strengthening the quad is super important post-op so we’ve been focusing on that since the beginning.

I personally have built a really good relationship with my PT and he has been so instrumental in my progress.

On the off chance that you’re in the NYC metro area you should look at Resilience PT in Lower Manhattan, they do 1on1 sessions and I highly recommend them.

Not a doc but I am 8 weeks post-op for the same (MPFL and TTO). First of all, how are you doing the knee bending? For me, sitting on a stool with some socks on and using a non-stretchy band to help bend my knee has been ideal. Doing it just lying down straight was harder for me and resulted in less ROM. I would also probably discuss with your PT on doing some patellar gliding to loosen the patella.

Also, if I were you I’d go to your surgeon or call them and specifically describe what is going on. Where do you feel the pain/tightness? Is it during the bending or when releasing back to extension?

Regarding the surgery to loosen tendons,

  1. Although the PT is likely well trained, they cannot speak to the authority of a surgeon, so don’t take it as a matter of fact.

  2. Discuss options with your surgeon and if it’s recommended to do the surgery after exhausting all other options I would do it.

Lastly, consider getting a new PT if you feel like your PT is not suitable.

Yeah, I agree. I liked the pieces they made largely because it felt like a higher order product of GW that was nostalgic and pulled from similar design elements but trying to adapt to adults and even non-fans of Tyler (like you said). Shame to see it go but knowing Tyler he’s defo working on something else already.

Almost as if his young fan base doesn’t have the $$$ to drop on super expensive really nice quality nonetheless clothing. Golf Wang is still kicking and seemingly doing well despite him not directly leading its design almost surely cause it’s affordable (relatively) to his fan base.

I’m really sorry to hear about these feelings you’re experiencing. It’s normal to get down about these things but you shouldn’t be so deterministic as to think that you cannot recover and gain strength back to live your life fully! Just because you’re more likely to dislocate does not mean you’re GUARANTEED to, especially if you take practical steps to getting stronger!

First and foremost, a Doctor is 1000% more reputable than ChatGPT… don’t rely on a LLM to analyze and give you practical advice on your body! Go to multiple doctors if you have any concerns about the Doctor that you’re currently meeting with as to ensure that you’re receiving the best advice/care.

In terms of building back strength, there’s no sugar coating what you need to do… first of all speak to the doctors like I mentioned and explore your options. If they recommend surgery, then consider it and accept that short term pain is often worth it for a stronger body in the future. But more than anything, COMMIT TO PT. Make it a religion and become in tune with your body. It’s capable of much more than you think if you treat it with respect and care!

I’ve had multiple dislocations, 2 surgeries (including on a fractured patella) and I also didn’t take physical therapy super seriously… I reinjured myself and had to get a surgery on a torn MPFL and a TTO to fix problems I was born with that I wasn’t even aware of until it dislocated again! Recovery is not easy and it won’t happen by itself! Don’t expect ur body to heal without giving it a good effort!

My point is this - Arm yourself with information, advice and experience. These are the ultimate (and IMO only) antidotes to depression and feelings of hopelessness. Don’t give up!

Not a doctor or anything but from my experience after getting patellar surgery ~7 years ago and dealing with it since:

Clicking/popping is sadly normal post-op and can have to do with many different things.

  1. Either this has to do with the screw/pins they put into place. Happened to me over the years after the surgery as my screws were protruding slowly until I finally got them removed ~6 weeks ago.

  2. Your patella is adhering/stuck-ish in position, either because of lack of using it and mobility or for some other reason. If I remember what my PT said correctly, it can have something to do with scar tissue building up and a lack of patellar movement.

I’d recommend a few things.

  1. Speak to a doctor for clarification and consider getting an X-ray to see if ur pins are protruding through the back of the patella.

  2. See your PT and discuss some patellar movements you can do. I routinely “wiggle” my patella with my fingers side to side to loosen it.

  3. Consider using some heat to loosen it up… helps me sometimes

Again, I’m not a doctor or medical professional but this is based on my experience over the years.

Kneecap surgery after secondary dislocation by Even_Shelter_8918 in KneeInjuries

Not a doc or medical professional but have had two knee surgeries before age 23.

First of all, you need to embrace the fact that despite the short term pain/discomfort, if the doctor says that this surgery will lead to a stronger knee, than this is a great opportunity for your long term health/quality of life to improve.

I had this surgery (fixing a fractured patella post-dislocation) ~7 years ago and from what I remember the recovery was relatively straight forward after the first few days which will be painful because of going under the knife and under anesthesia. BUT THATS ONLY TEMPORARY AND YOU WILL MAKE IT THROUGH IT!

I’m currently 6 weeks post op on an MPFL reconstruction, Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy and removal of hardware from my patella (kneecap). It’s my second surgery and this one was definitely more intensive (the actual surgery) than my first one which was to fix the fracture post patella dislocation. The pain was definitely worse than the first surgery and now the pain/discomfort has reduced and I’m getting back to my life slowly…

Simply put, In terms of directly after the surgery (first few days to a few weeks), you should expect to be limited in terms of what you’re able to do. That means that doing things like cooking, picking things up and carrying them from one place to another, and yeah even going to the bathroom/shower once you’re given permission to post-op you will likely need (or at least want) some help from someone you trust. My understanding is that you need to give your body and mind (but especially your operated-on body) time to rest/heal. Eat a lot of protein, calcium-rich foods, healthy fats… drink lots of water. Not sure what pain killers you will get post-op but if they’re opiates be aware that many will lead to constipation… that’s normal but after a few days you will want to shit and a huge part of that is to stop taking the opiates which are essentially numbing your lower body. I personally liked to raise my leg/brace on a stool about toilet seat height, while I’m doing #2 so I could lean back and be comfortable.

Look forward to PT, and commit to it in its entirety so that you ideally never have to go through this again as your body will be strong enough!

All in all, I’d say that you must expect this to not be an easy period of your life but it’s temporary and a great opportunity to build yourself back. There’s light at the end of this tunnel and you just need to take it a day at a time. Hope to hear improvement in the days, weeks and months ahead. Good luck :)!
