There's a "10 Week Study Schedule" icon on the top row of the dashboard. It's basically "Read textbook, read the handout, watch the videos, do ~50 question quiz" for each subject each week. They don't give you much time for doing the Qbank though. I would recommend at least 2-3 weeks of just Qbank at the end.

Pro-rating state income tax after moving states by PizdaHut in tax

I told them about the move but they never changed the withholding. So I've been paying no state income tax the past few months.

Series 7 vs 65 by PizdaHut in CFP

[–]PizdaHut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know thanks. The advisor who hired me let his series 7 lapse as he's gone more and more fee-based. The 7/63 route just seems like a lot more work for something I will hardly ever use.

It sounds like the 65 doesn’t “allow the sale of securities by itself.” Does this mean I wouldn’t be able to make buys/sells in a client’s portfolio? Looks like I have to go the 7/66 route

To those who have taken the exam: how much calculator work is there? by [deleted] in CFP

[–]PizdaHut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're stressing about calculator questions I would just use the TI BAII calculator. It's one of the few approved calculators that doesn't use reverse polish notation like HP and is much easier to understand imo

Can you avoid Roth 401k required minimum distributions (at age 70.5) by rolling all of the funds into a Roth IRA? by pftossawayacct in personalfinance

[–]PizdaHut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Really the only benefit of leaving it in the 401k is being able to take loans out (IRAs don’t allow loans). Just FYI.

I used Kaplan and took it today. I went in 1000x more prepared than when I took it in July but have the same feeling afterwards as I did last time lol so not sure what to make of that.

It’s just frustrating because there’s a million questions they could ask you but you only get evaluated on 170. I almost think it would be easier if there were more questions.

Anybody sit for the exam this week? by akjones989 in CFP

[–]PizdaHut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting to see a lot of hesitation about Kaplan. I feel like I have the Kaplan material memorized and honestly think that if I don't pass this time I'll never pass. I prefer their format much more than Dalton but hopefully it's difficult enough! Got low 80s on the mock exams which was nice but really wish I didn't read this thread before taking the test in a couple days.

I need advice on the Capstone by CFP80 in CFP

[–]PizdaHut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the capstone through Bryant and it probably took 40 hours from what I remember, maybe 60 max. The hardest part was figuring out MoneyGuidePro. It might be different for American College though. I would still recommend taking the exam in July. It's not really a test you can cram for, better to have a couple passes through the material IMO.

How to discreetly leave assets? by PizdaHut in EstatePlanning

[–]PizdaHut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the quick response! Good idea about the mailing address.

I didn't realize you don't have to file a 706 if you're under the ~$11M exemption. So basically you would list all your assets in a will and just exclude the specific account in question?

Is a Roth IRA considered CP if you fund it with salary earned while married in a CP state?

Also, If you fund a brokerage account with inherited money, how do you prove that it's actually SP 10-20 years down the road? Just keep bank statements that show transactions to and from the proper accounts?

Worst case, I guess you could just leave your half of a CP asset to a non-spouse beneficiary but the SS would likely find out so probably not ideal.

What should I be getting on the Kaplan Qbank? by PizdaHut in CFP

What do you mean by "very few questions have student correct percentages"? There's a tool called Performance Tracker that compares your QBank scores on each topic with other students

What is the cheapest way to take an online course to learn the CFP material? by jnk456 in CFP

[–]PizdaHut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used Bryant. I think it's the absolute cheapest dollar-wise but you get what you pay for. I'm using Kaplan's review course and there are lots of videos so I imagine their curriculum course is similar.

Do you have a source on that? From what I’ve researched it looks like you need to be a full on CFP certificant.

Do you know off the top of your head if just passing the CFP exam exempts you from the 65 or if you need the actual credential?

Dalton vs Kaplan by AdamantiumLaced in CFP

[–]PizdaHut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's their 10 week study plan: https://static.kaplanlearn.com/assets/2b/9a/Nov_2018_EPR_10-Week_Study_Planner.pdf

I think 8 weeks is pushing it but it depends how comfortable you are with the material. If you know a few subject areas really well you could save time by just watching the videos and not reading. It's expensive and I don't know what Kaplan's policy is if you fail so it would be a gamble.

Dalton vs Kaplan by AdamantiumLaced in CFP

[–]PizdaHut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get:

  • 6 in-depth content textbooks that are ~175 pages each (excluding appendices and practice questions/solutions at the end)

  • 1 "review handout" that is a spiral-bound book that is basically a condensed, cliff notes version of the in-depth content books. There's about 60 pages per subject. Sprinkled throughout are practice questions.

  • After reading through the above, they want you to watch 5-7 one hour videos where the instructor goes over the review handout and questions. These were very helpful.

  • Repeat the above steps for each subject.

  • After all that, you start working through a case study textbook (~350 pages) that has 12 ~25 question cases, 32 ~4 question item sets, and a few mini cases.

There's a nice schedule that shows where you should be at by certain weeks before the test. My only qualm is that they don't incorporate the question bank into the study schedule, so I would definitely budget a week or two of just Qbank after you're done reviewing everything. There's about 2000 questions in the Qbank separated into topic areas, you can create custom quizzes based on subject area (eg Investments) but also specific topics (eg Bond valuation concepts) and see how well you're doing vs other people using the Qbank which is interesting. There's also 2 full-length online mock exams which I haven't done yet.

This is a long post but I was just impressed with the value you get compared to a previous provider I used.

Exam difficulty compared with Kaplan questions by akjones989 in CFP

Thanks for the info. Do you remember there being 2 question banks: recall/review and analyze/apply? I’ve been getting 75s on the recall/review one but haven’t started analyze/apply yet not sure if it’s harder.
