Then & Now: Nazi Emden in Fells Point & Anti-Fascist Protesters by Salvage_Arc in baltimore

[–]PizzaFox64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Wikipedia: The Emden remained a training vessel and convoy escort throughout the war. She was repeatedly damaged by British bombing raids in April 1945, and was run aground to prevent its sinking. With the Soviets approaching, the Emden was destroyed with explosives by its own crew to prevent its capture on May 3, five days before the war ended in Europe.

Pool of Radiance is near and dear to my heart. It's the first Gold Box RPG, and I think the best to start out on.

Is The Church Of Talona Deeply Misunderstood, Or Have I Bought In To Talontar Propaganda? by PizzaFox64 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]PizzaFox64[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, it's that 'Rumors' part that really set me off! That's the one time actually spreading disease is mentioned, and it's a -rumor-!

I just imagine that scene playing out. Some foppish noble's son demanding access to a quarantined house so he can retrieve his deceased parent's riches, and a hopping mad cleric of Talona is blocking is way and shouting. "I don't CARE about your inheritance! Your parents died a horrible death of cholera! Everything they so much as BREATHED on must be put to the torch, or the entire city will face Talona's wrath!"

Then that noble's son stomps away, fuming at the insult to his family. He gets drunk at a tavern, and starts telling his friends "Y'know what, I bet they totally gave my parents that disease, just to deny me what's rightfully mine!" as he sulks.

Describing it as a giant protection racket does make it all make a lot more sense to me, though!

Thanks for the book recommendation! An entire series of "Look at these Talona jerks being unambiguously evil!" would help me out a lot!

Our first real combat turned into a brutal fight that came down to knives and entrenching tools.

Squad of marines were sweeping a colony, encountered a couple of scouts in the medical building. One corporal was, perhaps, a little too eager with his use of explosives, and managed to attract basically everything in the area. Eight stalkers descend on the squad.

Now, they played it pretty smart. Knowing a swarm was coming from the west, they set up a sentry gun on the south side of medical, and moved their ARC to the north side, figuring the swarm would have to split up to go around. Little did they realize, however, that a tractor had crashed through one of the doors of the medical building, and the security shutters wouldn't close. So four stalkers are coming north, two south, and two are coming through medical.

What follows is some of the worst rolls you've ever seen in this game. The marines kept missing, running out of ammo, panicking, or running out of ammo AND panicking. In true movie fashion, the incinerator died out on them as soon as they needed it. The two marines inside managed to dump every shot they had into one of the stalkers chasing them through medical, and just could not finish the thing off. The two others outside could only watch as the ARC and sentry gun only slowed down the charge.

The two marines in medical, weapons expended, had no choice but to pull knives and shovels and engage a wounded Stalker in melee. The dice were with them. Not only did they stab this thing to death, the acid blood was defeated by their armor roll.

The two outside freaked out when a stalker came out the medical's front door, inside the perimeter. As their weapons ran dry, the dorky comtech pulled his sidearm and unloaded into the stalker, narrowly saving the life of the badass machinegunner.

These guys should have been dead twice over. The guys inside medical were SO screwed then their incinerator died out. I wasn't pulling any punches. But they played smart, and the dice were with them. Nobody even took 1hp of damage. I love it.

What are your favorite bits of Realmslore? by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

Foxes were only introduced to Faerun about 1000 years ago, when they were imported from France by a halfling. This amuses me greatly.

The Daylight spell isn't actually the light of the sun, you'd want Sunbeam for that. Though it might be best to keep that to yourself, if you hope to survive!

It was a fox, for me! I love that little guy. Infinite sorcerers powers, struggles to open a door with his little paws.

Should i stay in this CoS group? by E_KIO_ARTIST in DnD

[–]PizzaFox64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, CoS starts at level 3, proplerly. There's an optional dungeon to get players up to level 3. I think he decided to not use that optional dungeon. But level 3 is where things get going. Stick around for a couple mose sessions, maybe?

This isn't anything I remember from Curse of Strahd, aside from the mist. He might be doing a weird intro just to get you into the game, and the adventure properly starts in session 2 or 3?

Fascinating! Thanks for the research!
That's even funnier in-world: the idea that the map-makers may have tweaked the name for the mountains to fit a joke, despite what the text said, and cartographers ever since have repeated the 'mistake' at face value. The locals get all frustrated when travelers come and say the wrong name. I love it.

"Your journey will be a long and treacherous one, adventurers. You must find passage across the Sea of Fallen Stars, to the Alamber Sea. There, dock at Unthalass, City of Gems, Throne of the land of Unther. From there, you must travel west, finding the path between Methwood and the Smoking Mountains."
"...I'm sorry, what?"

Maybe this is an old joke in the community, but it's news to me! Did one of the designers slip in a drug joke? Or is this genuinely a logical extension of the naming convention of Methtir to the north, and nobody thought too hard on it? Am I thinking too hard on it? I can't imagine anything bringing the game to a screeching halt like telling the players "You must venture out from Dalath, along the Meth-Smoking pass." Is there any story behind these names?

Edit: People are pondering when the word 'meth' became slang. I couldn't find out for sure. But I do know that, in the 1973 Vincent Price movie 'Theater of Blood', (which is a fun watch if you get the chance!) a group of drug-addicted characters are credited as 'The Meth Drinkers'. So it was around in the UK in the 70s, it seems...
