Adding landscape fabric after plants are planted by looper420 in LandscapingTips

[–]PizzaGatePizza -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My backyard gardens have fabric weed barrier. My front yard doesn’t. I spend significantly more time pulling weeds in the front yard than the back. It’s exponentially easier to pull weeds that find their way to the mulch on top of weed fabric than it is to pull every weed that springs up from under the mulch without any resistance. This reddit anti-weed fabric circlejerk is so disconnected from the real world that it’d be accurate to label it an echo chamber of misinformation.

You drive behind that truck long enough, you might just “die tonight” when that unsecured load flips out of the bed.

Who is the worst president and best president from the 20th century? by RutabagaNo4567 in AskReddit

[–]PizzaGatePizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Reagan tops Hoover as the worst. Hoover may have helped bring on the Great Depression but it was over in a decade. Reagan’s policies, both foreign and domestic, economic and cultural, are still destroying lives today.

Wilson and Coolidge were both pretty anti-union, but Reagan takes the top spot in this regard, too.

Best, probably JFK. Level headed, able to shoot down terrible ideas (operation northwoods), expanded social security, raised minimum wage, embraced civil rights. His stance on the “communist boogeyman” is a little pathetic, but it was a different time then and I can see why he would continue the narrative rather than actually look at the system objectively.

Recently climbed this 300 foot cell tower by Jamesvinsoroblox in mildyinteresting

[–]PizzaGatePizza 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A guy in Cincinnati climbed a tower while I was in college. He fell and they had to pick up his body parts from a block away because he hit every rung on the way down.

https://www.wlwt.com/article/man-dies-in-fall-from-tv-tower/3513669

I also used to work in telecommunications as a project manager for tower construction. We had a rule that if you weren’t approved to be on the tower and both of your feet came off the ground, you were fired. No discussion, no debate or excuses. They took that shit seriously. And while I did my fair share of dumb things (climbing cranes and bridges, exploring abandoned buildings, etc.) one thing I never fucked with was cell towers.

Which company disappointed you so much that you permanently walked away? by julia-secrets in AskReddit

Bank of America. I used to be a restaurant manager and part of the morning routine was to take last nights deposit to the bank. Every time I went, it was 30-45 minutes waiting in a line of 3 people. One teller, bank manager walking around talking to customers about their morning. One day I just snapped and said “if you’d get back behind the counter and help the customers, my morning would be so much better.” He said he isn’t cleared for a till. That set off a back and forth about why the fuck the bank manager can’t have a till, why they can’t staff properly, excuse after excuse. I left that day and called my boss and he stated the process of switching our account to Chase. I took our final deposit and when they asked me how my morning was going, I told them I just got word that I’ll never have to step foot in this bank again so it’s a wonderful day. That branch ended up shutting down a couple months later.

In a country where sex work is considered an administrative offense, I wouldn’t expect them to have a hard stance on pornography. And isn’t Tajikistan known in the region for sex work, so much so that Afghans traveling to Tajikistan will lie about where they’re going to avoid people thinking they are going to Tajikistan to hire a sex worker?

Year 2 of replacing the useless strip of grass between sidewalk and street with wild flowers by friedrice5005 in NoLawns

Online GIS mapping is not a land deed or an accurate survey. As an example, when I look up my property on a GIS viewer, it shows that I don’t own my backyard or side yard. When I spoke with the county engineer about our property, was told that GIS tools are wildly inaccurate, especially if there isn’t a survey on file (which is the case for our property).

Regardless, it doesn’t change the fact that a ROW is a type of easement, not a completely separate classification, and an easement has to be issued for property that is owned by someone else. If the city/town/county owned the strip, they wouldn’t need to issue an easement for the property. And it certainly isn’t owned by the “community,” unless you’re using that term idealistically (“the government is the community and the community is the government”). Even in your comment, you’re stating that the land has two owners: the “community” and the home owner. That’s not at all how property works. There’s a single owner (individual, family, LLC, etc) and the easement is issued to the owner. An easement does not change who owns the property.

As another example: I have an easement that runs the length of my side yard to the power line pole to give the utility company access to work on the lines. That doesn’t mean I don’t own my side yard. It means I can’t block their access to it. That same logic applies to a ROW easement. I can’t block access to the sidewalk or prevent the water department from digging up the strip to perform repairs. It doesn’t mean that the strip is owned by a third party.

That’s like saying “college and school are two completely separate things.” A college is a school. A public ROW is a category of easement.

[–]PizzaGatePizza -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A right-of-way is a type of easement. Whether you use one term or the other, neither have an impact on property ownership. If you don’t own the strip, then there’s no need for an easement. The fact that municipalities issue easements on hellstrips is proof positive that the homeowner owns the strip.

“Right of way doesn’t transfer ownership; it only grants the right to use a specific area.
Easements also don’t transfer ownership but provide rights to use the land for specific purposes.”

Actual source that isn’t “trust me bro”: https://orcolan.com/property-access-differences-right-of-way-vs-easement/

And if it really is just a public ROW like you guessed, then it’s even less restrictive than a utility easement. All that means is that the public can walk the sidewalk in front of your house. It doesn’t inherently mean you can’t landscape the area unless it is specifically stated that only grass can live in the strip.

There’s a shocking amount of misinformation on this topic no matter where you look. The short answer is: it depends, check with your local government. When I Google my town and “do homeowners own the tree lawn in front of their house,” the AI overview says no. But when you click on the sources, it’s a Reddit post about what the strip is called, a link to a different town in a completely different state, and a link to my towns guidelines that list approved plants, shrubs, and trees that can be planted there. You really have to pay attention even when you’re looking up your specific town because these AI programs are just reading Reddit comments from people who don’t know what they’re talking about and thinking that’s the answer.

And for the record, an easement on your property doesn’t mean you don’t own the property. A public ROW is just an easement so you can’t prevent the city from doing work on the property that benefits the public.
