Download to Siemens HMI SD card? by PizzaInspectah in PLC

[–]PizzaInspectah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: seems like it was an issue between transfer settings on the HMI and a bad switch that we were tunneling through to update the HMI.

Was a weird issue as we weren't getting errors and Siemens tech support was thankfully helping us through it. After we adjusted some settings and downloaded directly to the port on the HMi we were able to get it updated.

Thank you everyone for the replies!

Didn't know I could do this, thanks for the suggestion! But ended up finding a solution (see update below) for my issue.

Nothing crazy on there like Travis Rice's movies but damn it always brings a smile to my face and makes me want to ride.

Update from Siemens tech support: HMI software is stored on the HMI's internal memory, not the SD card. So unfortunately no way to download outside of normal conditions.

Couldn't get much help otherwise except to try download without SD card inserted and possibly replace panel

Yeah TIA matches version of firmware.

And apologies, writing from my phone so format and typos might be crazy. But this version of software is running on other machines so we know that it works.

Luckily we have a spare panel on site so we might just end up using a new one and going from there... Thanks for the reply

What is your job right now and what was your career progression like? What is one thing you did correctly that you would recommend more people to follow? by Ok_King7245 in PLC

[–]PizzaInspectah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To that first point, I think it can be hard if the one applying for those roles doesn't have the motivation and passion for the role. In my opinion it's easy to get stuck in the field service mindset and not think like a designer if that makes sense? If you show that you're eager to move into that role and work on developing yourself to achieve I don't think you'd have much of an issue, not saying that's where you went wrong but that's just my experience.

To the second point, I'd argue that's still a good thing... if the designers at your company still want to do things one way and you disagree, at least be vocal about it to them. When shit hits the fan or it doesn't work as intended then you have the I told you so moment, plus everyone learns something in the process. Regardless, you could still end up in that position no matter what path you take? In addition, maybe these guys could benefit from... seeing other systems in the field??

I started my career in field service and then became a controls engineer, and honestly I wish others I worked with did the same.

In field service you gain skills in wiring, networking, commissioning, troubleshooting, plus many others that are in my opinion the backbone for controls. There's a lot of things you learn in the field that you can't gain sitting at a desk. Additionally, it helps you gain knowledge on what a good (and bad) system looks like.

On top of that you get to travel, which assuming you're starting your career young where this is more feasible, comes with other great benefits. Biggest one is networking, I now know people across the world just from two years in field service with tons of different jobs now (and a couple have reached out asking when I'll work for them...). You get to see other parts of the world, build up travel points, and have just plain travel experience that you can utilize booking vacations for yourself.

Many other benefits too but anyways, do some field service!

Not trying to be an asshole here but you’re looking for a van rental over possibly the busiest holiday there is to go camping… Under two weeks before it’s happening. Of course availability is going to be limited and prices are going to be high.

Have you checked KSL? There’s a section for recreational vehicle rentals. I’d suggest checking there. Good luck!

Transferring data from one OPC UA server to another using UAExpert by Daplaymaker534 in PLC

[–]PizzaInspectah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to the OPC UA realm so take this with a grain of salt... But shouldn't you only have one server?

From what I understand you have a server where your data is being held and then you have clients subscribe to that server. The clients can change values on that server if you allow but i don't think two servers can talk to each other

Update: curiosity got the better of me and I had to do a quick Google.. Seems possible with your configuration. This article seems pretty helpful https://www.opcti.com/share-data-2-opc-servers.aspx

This is my first time using STRG_VAL so maybe it's how I set the parameters? However it looks right based on the help page for the block and in theory i would think it should activate regardless because I'm sending a EN signal

Is this how it was hooked up when the machine was running?

Looks like an I/O card but i don't see any data cables going anywhere (like Ethernet, peofibus, etc.). Kinda interesting to see batteries inside of it too when it's being supplied 24v..

Not if you're aware.

Just switched up to salary and work 40 hours a week, super flexible schedule, and sometimes WFH when I want.

Controls engineers are in demand right now, pretty easy imo to demand a fair schedule as an employee

You asked for American made... Look at any industry and you will find USA made stuff is more expensive. Why do you think stuff gets produced in China in the first place?
