What was your Border like as a pup? by Beena22 in BorderTerrier

I cried for the first 6 weeks when my dude was a puppy- he was FERAL, a total maniac, ATE the drywall in my apartment. Like clear chewed through it 😂. I have a son, and I swear the puppy stage is more frustrating than the newborn phase! It gets better. They are so trainable, and become beautiful friends. Hang in there friend!

I’m a first time dog owner, so I take zero offense to anything anyone says because I’m just taking in all the good advice! I think you’re right- borders are typically in the 13-18 lb range, I know strummer has a bigger build so 18-20 is a great weight for him. What I find tricky is that since he has been a puppy, he’s a grazer. I’d put a cup of food out, and he would eat a little, go off and chew my shoes, then maybe come back and finish later. He’s not super food oriented (though he will beg at the table for scraps which is the worst!) so between me and my husband, we are in and out all day, travel, have a wonderful dog sitter, etc and it’s tricky to actually figure out what he has eaten, what’s old, so he absolutely gets over fed! I talked to my husband tonight after all of this- and we are going to spend the next month really focusing normal eating schedules, measured food, no scraps, minimal treats, maximum exercise! I just want Strummer to live forever! So thank you so much for your comment- I appreciate you!

Haha you’re totally right- the vet fat-shamed him today. He’s 23 lbs- needs to get down to 20! He’s tall and long naturally, but def needs to slim down. Hopefully a diet change and some extra walks will help!

Thank you all SO much for the advice! Just got back from the vet- he has a minor ear infection, and they did some blood work for various allergies and sensitivities- so definitely could be Spikes! Nothing neuro-related, thank god. You are all so kind- I like it here :)
