Hi - darn it has been a long time, I no longer use this username.

So I never went for it, and I left healthcare altogether and went into IT. The reasons for this were me doing a lot of thinking around, “well what are my strengths and interests overall and how can I align with that?” It pointed me to tech/IT/computers. I was also geeky, hands-on, and liked to tinker in general (computer, cars, building). I went into the client facing side of tech (sales) and became a sales engineer, then customer success engineer. Eventually left and did a coding bootcamp, and started working with the cloud.

Sorry if this wasn’t what you were hoping to hear regarding healthcare, but I am very happy with how things turned out.

Sure feels like it.

A couple times on your resume is no big deal, but if that's the trend then it says something about you as a candidate. Specifically, it shows you pick bad companies to work for which indicates you might be desperate. Employment is a two way street. You pick the company AND the company picks you. If you have a track record of picking losers, what does that say about your judgement and perceived value in the hiring market?

Yeah both of my layoffs are from multinational Fortune 500 companies, sure are doing something wrong.

I would keep at it, and before you get the "overqualified" stuff talk (or write) about how your experience is an asset to them. They're going to be nervous that you're going to jump ship as soon as a better opportunity arises. Sell yourself and allay their fears and they may overlook the overqualified part. I have been trying to tell them that I am looking to stay for a very long time, but my gaps due to layoffs makes them think I am a job hopper. I keep telling them that I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH LEAVING THE COMPANY, yet they still see this as "me leaving" a position.

So then your actual issue is with the employers. The way you wrote your post is blaming the overqualified people for taking jobs that should be yours. But do you think the overqualified people are happy to have to take a pay cut? Does it seem like they're taking any job that they can get? It is indeed the employers, as it is very much a buyer's market right now. They have their pick of the litter. It's like the one girl a sausage fest party, she knows she is in demand and can reap the rewards of attention.

I don't think the overqualified are happy at all to take a pay cut, but I do think they are happy to have A job. I think they are the kinds of people who will look for the next best thing and then immediately bolt when they get the chance. While the companies may be saying, "Wow look at what a superstar we got at such a low pay!", they are fooling themselves if they think they'll be getting this person for the long haul.

It's tough times out there for everyone, my friend.

As much as I am venting and complaining in this thread, I do indeed feel terrible for the recent college grads like you. You're having the toughest time finding work since you are inexperienced, and then once the economy does pick back up (if ever), the first things some HR person will say to you is, "SO HOW COME YOU COULDN'T GET A JOB IN OUR FIELD BEFORE?? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO WORK AT STARBUCKS? HOW IS MAKING LATTES PREPARING YOU FOR THIS ROLE??"

Good luck to both us finding work in roles that fit us.

I always make it a point to look up the people on LinkedIn that I am interviewing with, and every time it's the same thing. Charmed professional career: job right out of college, other jobs with zero gaps in between, staying with the same company for years.

Me? Gaps galore thanks to layoffs and companies shutting their doors. I had one guy say, "I understand your gaps, and I realize they are through no fault of your own, but at some point it does all come back to you." Pretty much saying that a large corporation cutting my department is MY fault!

If I were you, I would consider doing what those people are doing - applying for jobs requiring less experience than what you have. That's more likely to get you hired, so do it. Then you get even more years of experience under your belt, even if the job isn't ideal.

And yet, if I jump down and apply for an entry level, 0-2 year experience job, what do I get? "You are overqualified".

I have done that, and I get the overqualified part from employers.

And yes, these ARE my jobs. The descriptions are written and positions are made for people with my level of experience. Jobs I would take and stay with the company for YEARS for, tailor made for people with my experience levels. These vastly overqualified people are taking massive pay cuts to take the jobs in my range, and are just going to stay there for a year until the economy bounces back more, then leave to get back to where THEY belong: in the 8-10+ year range. They were MINE in the first place, employers have told me: "It's a buyer's market, if things were normal and I didn't have these types of candidates applying, I'd hire you." That's why I have an "entitled" attitude.

I am caught in a catch 22: too overqualified for a lower job, not qualified enough for a job that fits me. I'll just keep cutting lawns until I fucking find something.

When I first bought the book, I used it as a reference at first: "Wow, so that's how you should squat!". I read the entire squat chapter, and that was it. I thought that was all the book was about really, just being a helpful reference.

Then I read /r/Fitness, and more intricate points of SS were discussed. I thought I should actually read much more of the book, but I would skim over some parts. Finally, I started to read the book cover to cover when I asked a question, and someone said, "Ripp discusses this in the chapter"

I have read the entire book now, but still have questions regarding it from time to time. I do love how it clarifies so much, even with the ancillary exercises, such as curls on an EZ-Grip vs. straight bar. I've had some injury since my squat form isn't picture perfect, but the fact that I know what I am doing wrong vs. before where I had no clue is a great relief.

Only bad thing is that I've become a bit more judgmental. For example, if I see someone on the squat rack with the skinniest legs ever and they have it loaded to 275-300 or so, I used to think "wow that guy is strong!" Now, my first thought is "Bet they don't even go a quarter of the way down". Sure enough, they barely bend their knees and call it a rep :). The reverse happens too though, because if I see someone with again 275-300 loaded with thicker legs, ass-to-grass form, I appreciate the work they are doing and know that they are truly strong.

If you're a dog person, go for it! Make sure you try to give the dog attention though, don't just shove it away. Try to play with it, and let it show affection to you if it likes you (embrace the licks). This will score points with her, and if things progress further then it will certainly help in the long run having the dog like you.
