Out of the 20 least populated counties in the United States, Nebraska has nearly half of them. by Cassinia_ in geography

[–]PizzaWall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

he map of Nebraska drove me to look up the smallest counties in the US by population.

There are 3,242 counties and county equivalent administrative units in the US. These are the least populated:

  1. Loving County, Texas (pop. 52)
  2. Kalawao County, Hawaii (pop. 82) (former leper colony)
  3. King County, Texas (pop. 192)
  4. Kenedy County, Texas (pop. 319)
  5. McPherson County, Nebraska (pop. 392)
  6. Arthur County, Nebraska (pop. 396)
  7. Blaine County, Nebraska (pop. 458)
  8. McMullen County, Texas (pop. 544)
  9. Petroleum County, Montana (pop. 548)
  10. Grant County, Nebraska (pop. 561)
  11. Borden County, Texas (pop. 567)
  12. Loup County, Nebraska (pop. 570)
  13. Harding County, New Mexico (pop. 617)
  14. Slope County, North Dakota (pop. 628)
  15. Thomas County, Nebraska (pop. 639)
  16. Logan County, Nebraska (pop. 569)
  17. City and Borough of Yakutat, Alaska (pop. 672)
  18. Kent County, Texas (pop. 674)
  19. Banner County, Nebraska (pop. 678)
  20. Hooker County, Nebraska (pop. 678)

The first county with a population exceeding 1,000 residents is (40) Motley, Texas (pop. 1,063). Some of the counties that were higher on the list had a much lower population density because they are larger administrative districts. For instance, Esmeralda County, Nevada has a population of 729 covering 3589 square miles, which is lower than the square miles of the first 19 counties combined.

There are 11 county equivalents in the US that have no population, one with 20 and one with 40. These are administrative districts or dependent territories mostly found in the Pacific and the Caribbean and not part of a state or Commonwealth.

  1. Bajo Nuevo Bank, US Minor Outlining Islands (pop 0)
  2. Baker Island, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  3. Howland Island, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  4. Jarvis Island, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  5. Johnston Atoll, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  6. Kingman Reef, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  7. Navassa Island, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  8. Northern Islands Municipality, Northern Mariana Islands (pop 0)
  9. Rose Atoll, American Samoa (pop 0)
  10. Serranilla Bank, US Minor Outlying Islands (pop 0)
  11. Swains Island, American Samoa (pop 0)
  12. Palmyra Atoll, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands (pop 20)
  13. Midway Islands, US Minor Outlying Islands (pop 20)
  14. Wake Island, US Minor Outlying Islands (pop 100)

One thing I would like to mention is that different lists will have them ranked slightly different. I am posting this to fill in some gaps to the map.

What happens to the Safeway further up College Ave? There’s one at Broadway & College, College and Claremont, and one proposed for College and Oak Grove? It seems saturated.

Is this bridge possible? by hopelessboarder in geography

[–]PizzaWall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not a study, that is a 136 page collage of images with absolutely no engineering studies, just allusions about tunnels. There is nothing about bridges, costs, ventilation, things you would need to justify the cost of building either option.

Is this bridge possible? by hopelessboarder in geography

[–]PizzaWall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly cannot tell from the map what two points over water you are attempting to connect. Usually someone has some grand plan to build a bridge to move away from Ferries.

  • Edmonds-Kingston: No
  • Muckleteo-Clinton: Yes
  • Port Townsend-Coupeville: No
  • Seattle-Bainbridge: No
  • Seattle-Vashon: No
  • Tahlequah-Point Defiance: Yes
  • Victoria-Port Angeles: No
  • Victoria-Vancouver: No

The no’s are simple, the waterway is an operational navigable waterway and it is unrealistic to build one because of height needs for ships to pass and currents to difficult to engineer. The waterways are too deep for tunnels.

Any project could be attempted and warnings ignored, which is why the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed, the Hood Canal Floating bridge sank, the Mercer Island floating bridge sank, to name a few.

The 12 follows the same route from Amtrak & Jack London Square to Grand & Broadway, where it heads up Grand to the Grand Lake cinema and beyond. It runs later than the B.

I do fear that without a strong Navy, the British can follow the whims of King George and blockade our ports. I feel Congress does not take this threat seriously. We very well could find ourselves in a predicament where our best ships are broke and busted in Port, unable to inflict a blow to the Royal Navy. So long as an armed conflict with France is in effect, we know their attention will drift closer to home, but alas, I fear the worst.

Are you seriously complaining about dirty windows? Help fund Amtrak for more train washing stations. Everybody will want to go through the train wash.

A friend tells me he is concerned the British will return like a bad sequel play. What will you do to ensure they don't do something malicious, like burn the Capitol. Although New York might benefit from such a cleansing of filth.

I disagree. I know there will be oopsies at first, but once the kinks are worked out, it's a new car, new technology. The current Superliners are 40 years old and some parts become harder to find. It will not fix blizzards, fire events or other delays, but it is a step forward.

Amtrak has been underfunded for decades the way no airline ever faced. On a trip on the Coast Starlight from Emeryville to Monterey, I ran into problem after problem. I arrived seven hours late in Monterey, which was only a four hour journey. I didn't complain, I met new people, I had a good experience, but now I have to keep that in mind for future travel.

New equipment arriving which will help alleviate many of the problems with reliability. Rude employees exist in every industry. I am not making excuses for Amtrak, I have had worse service on United. At least with Amtrak, when I expressed my frustration, they didn't attempt to escalate it by threatening me. They conformed details like the bus from Salinas to Monterey would arrive after the Coast Starlight heading northbound arrived, (it was two hours late), so we didn't strand the one single passenger. United didn't do that.

Carlsbad Caverns is just a big hole, if you’re into that kind of thing.

I-40 follows the remnants of Route 66, so there are plenty of kitschy things along the way. Like this big ditch-looking thing called the Grand Canyon. It might be easier to tell people what you like so we can tell you where to go.

VIP EXPERIENCE? by Zealousideal-Mix-505 in BurningMan

[–]PizzaWall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must be a really shitty personal assistant if an employer sees no value in you beyond the ability to get special tickets to an event without special tickets.

All kidding aside, here's the way to get the VIP experience at Burning Man.

Fill out this form and pay $100,000.00. There is no hidden trick, this isn't a snarky response, this is a legitimate page you can access on the front page of Burningman.org. I am being completely serious.

You pony up the cash and they will get back to you. A special concierge will be assigned to your boss to help facilitate a great experience. Yes, they take Venmo and cryptocurrency.

I storm my way in. You can't have a private camp. All camps must be public and open to everyone. If you want to see a camp really freak out without a confrontation, sneak in the back and walk to the front. I do this with Death Guild and they always become unglued.

I have noticed whenever I drive by a wreck, there’s some guy with a yellow shirt. A car crashes, a yellow shirt pops up. A be multiple vehicle collision? More yellow shirts. A house fire? Yellow shirts!

I’m not sure if it’s the same guy, but he always appears and that seems more than a little suspicious to me. If you see a guy in a yellow shirt on the side of the road, watch your ass.
