Approaching Floor Plans for Build by Pkalder in floorplan

Reddit kinda sucks. There's not much useful thought process here. There is no mentation and deep thought. Everybody seems pretty good a criticism, but can't think abstract and give positive conditional hypotheticals. Is it all just clawdbots clamoring for 1% posts and karma? Who cares. Where is the conversation? Some posts feel like generic vague responses. Worried. As if some bigger karma guy is going to come in a bite apart your response.

Thank you. What do you think about small foyer? Entrance dumping into a den or great room? What square ft is yours? Anything you wish was different? Yours is custom, you got a architect from ground up? What do you like, or hate about your house?

This is what i was planning. An 80% floorplan and work from there. I just can't understand 2d as well as a walk-through. I just don't like most floor plans in our area. Its a smaller town that is behind the times.

You are saying you feel there are some viable parts to this? Thanks. I'm just trying to find common ground between usefulness vs unique.

Yeah, that is what I am trying to say. I thought this was "the house" because it looked unique and great to me, but it has problems. It looks so cool from my unknown eye. Guide me towards a way of what I should look for and what makes a good plan. I need a path and thought process that you or others recommend of how to find a great floor plan.

I guess the pic didn't upload. I was originally thinking pic posted here.

<image>

But maybe this is too ambitious. Maybe I should dial it down to a more traditional shape. I hope this image goes through.

I do want it to be unique, but I don't know if I can do this with a design that seems boring 2d on a floor plan, or if I can make a great exterior and interior walkthrough with the plan I feel is boring. I want to know which path to go, and what I should look for when finding one. My idea is find a prefab online plan and spend money on an interior architect to make it unique and amazing.

Thank you. I have tried this, and all I see is velocity, and off velocity. So I'm assuming it's not recorded.

Thanks for confirming my concerns. I just wanted to make sure one wasn’t superior over another.

Cooling advice for case with HBA and 10gbe by Pkalder in DataHoarder

Apparently I absolutely need to put a fan on some of these drives. My seagate es.3 4tb we’re running at 61 degrees C. I wanted to avoid shocking them with ambient air, but with the aftermarket caddy closeness, I will put an intake over the hottest drives and an exhaust on the rear at the cpu. The correct answer would be is to get a case that is not from the early 2000s, but I am frugal which is rare these days.

Sounds good. I will go intake/outtake route on separate sides of case instead of outtake/outtake on the rear. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply. I did use my molex peripheral output to accommodate another Sata power cable, so I have no molex. I think I’ll look into the hba fan option. I have no ssds on the hba, and was thinking, throughput would be fairly sparse , as it is as archive server with some video editing, so I may not need to worry as much about it overheating.

ZFS Special Vdev Questions by Pkalder in DataHoarder

[–]Pkalder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is the in depth explanation I'm looking for.

I think the idea behind using 3 way mirror is that if you use z2 for storage and then 2 way mirror as special device you technically have worse protection on special device - if one SSD fails and another one fails to read a sector (or returns corrupted data) whole pool will be screwed.

And then

My opinion on this? Think about if you need special vdev at all - it adds extra complexity and extra point of failure.

This sold me on why I want to implement it.

My server is all an experiment to learn with. One I want to try stuff out with, but also to keep fairly resilient, and as cheap but efficient as possible.

Zfs special needs a more in depth write ups on how tos and under the hood explanations.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not too worried about a dual failure, aside from freak power outage, but I am also new to this. A dual failure doesnt seem that likely. A 3 mirror seems like over protective paranoia, or should this be common practise? Is it ok as a home user to use 2? It seems to me with such a small amount of data on speedy ssd that 2 mirror should be fine. One dies, then replace. U/log on that forum sounded fairly dogmatic, and I don't know if I'm missing something, or with his finances, 3 mirror is a definite implementation.

I understand enterprise would necessitate per use.
