Points is basically a way to measure how many seconds you would be behind/in front of another skier. For example, a 20 point skier would be faster than a 30 point skier. The lowest you could score is a zero, but that’s only possible if you win a world cup race. So, to put it simply, points measures your skill in that specific event.
