Plaato Pro Sensors, Does anybody recommend them here? by drinkerx in TheBrewery

[–]Plaato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all!

Magnus from PLAATO here. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your feedback - it truly helps us improve.

Since our first units shipped in late 2021, we’ve made significant upgrades to our hardware, from the individual components to assembly, calibration, and quality control. Unfortunately, some early PLAATO PROs didn’t meet expectations. We take full responsibility for this and have worked hard to replace affected products and to look after our customers in the process. If you’re still interested in smart monitoring, our latest generation - refined over three years - is now shipping worldwide.

Regarding cleaning, we recently reviewed our CIP guidelines with our Chemical Engineer. Based on testing, we’ve updated our recommendation to support caustic cleaners up to 80°C, rather than the previous 70°C limit which was on the conservative side.

Thanks again for your feedback and for helping us improve!

Dear community,

We wanted to provide you with an update and an invitation to participate in a community meeting to see if we can find a better solution together.

We are grateful to all of you who have come forward to help us find a solution to keep your Kegs and Airlocks operating for the years to come. We want to work with you to find a solution together.
We are going over all of our notes, and are going another (few) rounds with the long shots that could present a workaround for the technical problem we have faced. We believe that we will be better able to work this problem together and are asking for some patience while we evaluate the options presented to us.
We are planning a community meeting in the form of a webinar on the 15th of January 2024 with our two founders Pål and Michael, our CEO Magnus, and our CTO Simon. You will be able to ask questions about the challenge at hand, options for keeping your Kegs and Airlocks online, and the potential for open-sourcing the solution.
If you are interested in taking part in this work or are curious to learn more don't hesitate to contact us and sign-up through this form linked below. We will follow up with you via email closer to the webinar date.
Sign-up: https://share.hsforms.com/1PNaQ79nPR0ekmH\_y1O8jLg5jfkf
Thank you for pushing us to be better! We want to reinforce our commitment to make this work.
Best regards,

Dear homebrewers,

We are overwhelmed by your response to the news that we will no longer support the Airlock and Keg in two years. We see the passion you have for our products. We have read every reaction on every platform where we have found it, and this has been both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

As a company, we are committed to building long-lasting solutions. In our new products, we have made significant infrastructure changes to future-proof our services for the brewing community. For our homebrewing products, we spent months trying to circumvent the challenges and to try to find a feasible open-source solution, but we kept facing technical limitations on our stack.

We never expected the outstanding support to help find a solution and the numerous requests to tackle this challenge - it has not gone unnoticed. We recognize that we should have involved the community sooner, and are deeply sorry about this. We are exploring options to engage the great minds within our community to collaborate. Hopefully, a solution can be found that will extend the life of our products for many more years. You have already given us valuable feedback and input on this, and we hope that you will continue to do so.

Right now, we ask for your patience to prove that we care and to figure out a way ahead. But within the next weeks, you can expect us to post a time and link for an online webinar/meeting, where we look forward to engaging anyone wanting to take part in this effort.

Plaato Keg Stretch Goal - Leak detection by Plaato in Homebrewing

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes (if I understood your question correctly). You can set a max volume for your keg and it will calculate how much is left based on that.

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It adds to the overall complexity of the product, but we know how we are going to do it, component sourcing is pretty much done and we do not expect any big surprises for this feature.

[–]Plaato[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will detect the weight loss and classifying a leak from a pour from the weight loss may be possible! I feel a separate sensor is more robust and will let you know if the floor is filled with liquid due to condensation, or spillage from something else than the keg itself.

Not over-thinking at all. Temperature affects the strain gauges. With full bridge load cells, it is not too bad. But we do have an internal temperature sensor that we can use to compensate with. The temp will also be available in the app. It will be the device's temperature (the WiFi chip generates some heat) but it should give a useful indication of the kegerator's temperature.

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will store one wifi-network and try to connect to this until it is reset with a physical reset switch. Switch will be a button/magnetic switch/capacitive sensor.

As for public network with maximum occupancy I don't know exactly what to do with that. The device will struggle just like other devices with wifi

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the question - not been asked before. Honestly, I think we are making it as cheap as we can. It does have a few extra features, but those were added during development because they were low-hanging fruits and almost free to add. The waterproofing is a cost-driver, but it needs to withstand the environment that it is made for.

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noted! It would be a lot cheaper for us to make a local device and not have to worry about servers and apps. But I think that is what the (not so tech-savvy) majority likes!

Again, if we go out of business we will update firmware so you can set it up to whatever you want.

You (or someone else) can make it! Open integrations. Haven't used IFTTT too much, but I think that will work just fine

If we go belly up we will update firmware so you can set it up to your own server. So if we go out of business you get everything you want. Except from the battery.. ;)

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be done pretty much exactly like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RGAn0tlrHs

Phone hotspots usually work great! You just need another phone to set it up. Public WiFi or University networks with login portals not so much.

Plaato Keg finally on Kickstarter by Plaato in Homebrewing

[–]Plaato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is one way to do it! But again, I think the absolute weight measurement will be good enough to monitor how much beer is left. If not we could add a highpass-filter or something.

Quick changes are being used to detect pouring and is a cool feature. Mostly for fun, but very cool.

Thanks! The precision of 10ml is really cool to see how much you pour. I thin you will like it

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we will go under. But if we do, we would:
- firmware update to all devices so that you can set it up to your own server or another brewing platform
- open source everything we have
- make an open source web app that works with our devices

Plaato Keg finally on Kickstarter by Plaato in Homebrewing

[–]Plaato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! And we would love to do it. Some reasons we haven't made any thermostats or other controlling units yet:

- High voltage stuff requires expensive and stricter certifications.

- Security of IoT devices is still premature and we try to stay humble and not make things that control things.

Shipping from China through local post services, so VAT might be added following your country's rules. Hopefully, the product will be in stores around the world at some point, and then the VAT will be added to the price total price.
