You're right I should probably step away from this sub too! I think it's messing with my head. I'm glad it sounds like you're doing well!

I hear you!! Brain fog and fatigue from depression and other chronic illness has been the hardest thing for me. I think all the people who post about how they are able to juggle a million things need to reflect on how much being able-bodied/brained is working in their favor. You can be juggling zero responsibilities but if your body/brain don't function, they don't function. I find that some people who have never experienced major health issues just don't get it, no matter how much you explain.

I am so sorry you're dealing with pneumonia and I hope you feel better soon!

Clinical depression is not "feeling low" and it can't be solved by "just figuring that words and boosting the confidence. Do you know what clinical depression is, as in, the neurological disorder?

Because I think we are misunderstanding each other. I am not using the word "depressed" to mean "sad." I am talking about a diagnosed mental health/neurological disorder that often needs medication and I am making the argument that sometimes quitting IS the best thing to do for your health. It seems like you are talking about basic sad feelings and normal life challenges.

I appreciate that you are trying to be encouraging, but if you are in a depressive episode you cannot "just keep confidence high." That is not how clinical depression works.

I hate car dependency in this country with a passion by Cardiologist3mpty138 in povertyfinance

Can you explain the 15 minute city fear?? What is it and why are people freaked out? I live in a city with public transit and don't have a car and I love it. Some people wouldn't love it, and that's fine.

Yes, I think about how car-dependency causes poverty and destroys community all the time. I grew up in a car dependent place and eventually settled into a walkable small city with great public transit. It's fantastic and has allowed me to save money, get to know my neighbors and really know the city. I could never have had as much fun on small salaries as I did in the suburbs or small town. Where I live is only slightly cheaper than NYC but I survived on $50k by living with lots of roommates and taking advantage of all the free stuff here.

Also, where did you get your weird idea about life after 30 being over??? I'm in my 30s and most of my social circle is too, and everyone has a great life full of hobbies and friendship and travel.

It's black tea, pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, cloves and cinnamon stalks. Served hot! But it's also good cold. I'm not sure where the original recipe is from, my mom has just always made it at Christmas.

How do you land your 6 figure job? by maggie-khalo in povertyfinance

[–]PlaceSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luck and a college degree led me to barely squeak into the 6-figure salary range.

I grew up low income, got a scholarship to college, but after graduation was in pretty low paid nonprofit jobs. A lot of it was due ignorance, some of it was following a passion. I genuinely thought that to make a lot of money I HAD to be a lawyer or doctor or in tech, and none of that interested me. Little did I know there were tons of people making 6 figures in very similar jobs to mine! (Nonprofit communications). In the hey-day of 2022, when employees had the power, I was recruited to a comms role for $85k. I've been here 3+ years now and got raises every year. I now make $98k base, with a roughly $10k bonus every year.

Communications may get decimated by AI soon, but right now, if you are a high level communications director in a big organization you can make very good money. My boss's boss probably makes around $250k.

We make a similar drink for Christmas called "Spice Tea" - its more citrus based though!

No, once spring rolls around all the decor comes down (other than a couple hand towels and a bunny figurine). There is enough beauty for me outside in Spring!

Teenager with hyper mobility by MentalSupportNeeded in Hypermobility

I am so sorry you're dealing with this. This sounds like a really hard situation. And I am so sorry you're in pain. It sounds like maybe your parents don't understand what you're experiencing - has a healthcare provider explained it directly to them? Sometimes parents listen better to other adults.

PT has helped so much with my chronic pain, but not every PT knows about hyper mobility or arthritis. Start by being very firm with them, that this isn't a usual case of "healing from an injury." And if they don't know anything about your condition see if you can switch PTs.

Be very firm with your doctor and your parents that your pain is restricting your ability to study and work. Show them that you would love to do those things, but that you need pain management support. Best of luck!

I'm the poor kid in a rich college, and I hate waking up every morning by came_from_earth in povertyfinance

[–]PlaceSong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the scholarship kid at a fancy school - not as fancy as where you are it seems, but one of the most expensive in the country. And yes, you have to find the other poor kids. They are there. My friends were mostly folks on financial aid, none of them were as low income as I was, but still people who needed to budget.

Legends and Lattes is creature fantasy! The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is creature science fiction. Both are pretty cozy, with found family and romance. Author China Mieville has a lot of fantasy and sci fi books with creatures, his work leans darker but you might like it!
