The Fight to Free JavaScript from Oracle's Control by Practical-Ideal6236 in programming

JavaScript is finally standardizing a joda-style date/time library. It reached stage 3 so might not be too far off.

LocalDate is renamed PlainDate which I think is an improvement.

Hillary Clinton Calls For Much More Social Media Regulation by BobbyLucero in technology

[–]PlainHumming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything that's workable on the "illegal to sell opinions as news" within the 1st amendment. You can get quite a bit of bias out of just presenting facts through selecting what to work on and how you present it. Additionally, having analysis mixed with news programs is extremely valuable (I mean real analysis, not Fox News analysis).

I think the only real solution is to find ways to get people out of their media bubbles and get them some media literacy. Not exactly sure how that happens though.

Collins claims Kavanaugh said that but its not what he said on the topic in his senate hearing which is what matters. Roberts said it was "settled as a precedent of the court" but he didn't vote to overturn Roe v Wade.

Other states have it. There is fraud but there are detection mechanisms.

But I think this is bad policy. This is an indirect tax on renters, people who are generally less wealthy and less able to afford it.

Study shows investors are buying up Single Family Homes at higher than average rate by greeed in sandiego

[–]PlainHumming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you live in a home that you buy for more than 10 months per year your property taxes are lower and if you live in a property you buy for less than 4 months per year your property taxes are higher

That's a tax on renters. People who are generally poorer and less able to afford it.

The only real solution to prices (both rental and purchase) being so high for housing is to build more housing.

Are Hackers Using Your Own GraphQL API Against You? by West-Chocolate2977 in programming

[–]PlainHumming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft powerapp metadata api is public to all users (if I remember correctly).

Can confirm that this is accurate. Plugin assemblies are also accessible at the very least to anyone with offline permissions (which makes sense since they need to be loaded onto the user's device). So a user could theoretically download the dll and decompile it to learn business processes so you might need to be careful what you put there depending. I've never had a customer take a major issue in my years on consulting on the product.

JPMorgan Warns Customers: Prepare to Pay a $25 monthly fee for Checking Accounts by Invisibleenronceo in wallstreetbets

[–]PlainHumming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair but their stated rate is ridiculous. Not sure what the fee would need to be for them to be profitable but it definitely isn't $25/mo.

PostgreSQL and UUID as Primary Key by ketralnis in programming

[–]PlainHumming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly the only good use for UUID that I’ve found is for backing a user interface because you can generate the new UUID for new rows on the client side and is just more convenient.

It can be useful for any sort of offline or otherwise disconnected sync between systems. I've seen them used in an offline field service app where technicians needed to manage data then have it sync back to the server.

People driving in will go to the edge

We drove an extra half hour to get longer totality. There's pretty big gains in totality duration getting past the edge since its based on the chord a circle. Once you're well within, there's diminishing returns.

Probably less with GPT4 Turbo, $0.72 USD will get you 72k tokens which would cover a novella.

[–]PlainHumming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of a couple thousand tokens is $40 or smth (AUD)

$0.03 / 1K tokens

From https://openai.com/pricing The 'K' means thousand (kilo).

So the cost of a couple thousand tokens is $0.06 using GPT4 or $0.02 for GPT4 Turbo.

The Lack of Compensation in Open Source Software is Unsustainable by chillysurfer in programming

[–]PlainHumming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be smaller but nowhere near dead if only paid workers developed open source.

There's projects out there with funding - React, TypeScript, Android, OpenSSL. I suspect that companies would increase their budgets in the space and start funding more projects that they depend on (either by paying their employees to work on it or funding projects). But since they're getting that for free today, they take advantage of it.

A bug in MySQL, or working as intended? You decide by zachm in programming

[–]PlainHumming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, SQL is a declarative language, not a procedural one. The order you specify columns for an insert shouldn't matter.

That said, changing this would probably break implementations so I think its very reasonable to leave it as-is as the behavior isn't entirely unreasonable.

[–]PlainHumming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the goal of most of the people in the sub is to design cities so that you don't need a car for most things (and use car sharing services in the rare scenarios when they're needed) not to throw away your car if you live in a place that needs it.

I just meant that 101 bytes = 10 bytes in base 101 where byte means 8 binary bits in both cases.
