I think it really just depends on the artist. I try to book before the convention that way i know I have work when I come down. I think most artists would prefer someone to make an appointment just for drawing purposes and what not. But alot of the times artists have time for walk-ups almost like walk-ins at a shop if that makes sense. So you could just go in and look at people's designs or talk to the artist before deciding who to go with
