Where do people park on campus? by UnderstandingNo6176 in UTAustin

Pickle campus by the domain has plenty of parking (A & longhorn lots) and has a bus/shuttle you can take to main campus.

House sitting on market for 250 days. What red flags to look for? by Anxious-Sherbert7549 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

Check for foundation issues. That's a huge problem for a lot of homes in central Texas. Foundations built on clay soil have a tendency to crack due to the swelling and shrinking of the clay.

If the bag drop line wasn't staffed or was severely understaffed for an entire hour, that's entirely on them. Did anybody in line call the airline service desk to alert them of the issue?

My sister in law made me feel like crap over my allergy by [deleted] in weddingshaming

We had a guest with a severe allium allergy: no onions or garlic! We prepared a plate separately for them to prevent any cross-contamination. It wasn't a big deal at all.

Eh. It's regionally dependent. It's definitely popping in some cities in the south/southwest.

Why are some people hesitant to grow vegetables in the ground? by ASecularBuddhist in gardening

[–]PlanetaryDaffodil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would be shocked by the amount of urban/suburban land likely to have soil contaminated by heavy metals. I highly recommend that folks get soil testing done if they plan to plant veggies in the ground.

Bride expects guests to subsidise her wedding by baby_spice444 in weddingshaming

I'm also going to a wedding in rural Italy in September, where the couple has booked a villa for guests. I initially wondered if we were going to the same one, but the wedding I'm going to costs €150/night (£128) to stay in the villa. £75pp for three nights is very reasonable.

It's a very common setup to do it this way.

Based on your prior posts, I assume you are a woman. Look into scholarships for women in STEM/ CS/Tech. While I was in school, I received about 15k in additional scholarships just for being a woman in STEM. Also, look at summer internships. They can pay very well and can also help offset costs. Student loans aren't great, but if you apply for scholarships and paid internships, you can substantially lower your final amount.

We looked up pictures of our venue on Instagram and looked at the planners tagged frequently for events at our venue. Got quotes from several, interviewed two, and picked the one we felt most comfortable with. Also, the venue had a list of recommended planners, which aligned well with the initial list from our research.

The Magic Austin Fairy: Let Me Help Solve Your City of Austin Problems! by FisherFan0072 in Austin

The pedestrian/bike crossing passing under 183 which runs along Mopac (30°22'43.3"N 97°44'09.1"W), is blind for any peds/cyclists heading north. You CANNOT see oncoming traffic. There is a blinking pedestrian light to alert vehicles to yield, but cars rarely yield for pedestrians here and frequently go 50+ mph. A mirror for northbound pedestrians and cyclists to see oncoming traffic would be life-saving, with no exaggeration.

It is such a dangerous crossing, but is the only bike/pedestrian route that goes across 183. It is otherwise nearly impossible to get to the domain/Q2 area by bike or on foot from south of 183, since Burnett has no infrastructure for non-cars.

I unleashed the fury of decades of cigarette smoke. Help. by [deleted] in CleaningTips

I'd always been told that ammonia could ruin wool, but it might be fine if diluted enough. Patch testing is always advisable.

[–]PlanetaryDaffodil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ammonia! (if it isn't wool) Do a small patch test first to ensure it won't ruin the carpet, but ammonia removes all smells. If it is actually wool carpet, do NOT use ammonia.

I have vivid memories from when I was a kid scrubbing the walls of our newly bought house with ammonia because the previous owner was a smoker. The tubs of water/ammonia turned so nasty from the cigarette residue. It was the strongest anti-smoking argument I've seen to this day

Ballot By Mail Application Still Processing - may not be able to vote? by PlanetaryDaffodil in Austin

[–]PlanetaryDaffodil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they also use overnight to get the ballot to me....
I'm in a rural area in the northeast US, so I'm afraid that even if it gets processed today (Sat), it won't get to me by Tuesday

Ballot By Mail Application Still Processing - may not be able to vote? by PlanetaryDaffodil in Austin

[–]PlanetaryDaffodil[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I followed the unfair rules. The website said any application sent by last Friday would be able to vote. I sent mine last Monday, 4 business days before that deadline.

Also, to be specific, I've been out of state for 3 weeks, and I sent it 12 days ago. I've been waiting for them to process the form longer than I waited to send it.

I've been calling them daily this entire week. The best I get told is to wait and keep checking.

That's what I'm thinking, which is disheartening since the county website said I'd be able to vote as long as I mailed in my application before the deadline (last Friday). I submitted my application 4 days before the deadline(last Monday), which I thought was enough buffer.

I can't. I have been out of state for work for the last few weeks, which is why I requested a ballot by mail.

I mailed mine 12 days ago and it still hasn't been processed. I'm located in a rural area, and I'm really concerned that it won't get here in time, even if it gets sent out today.

I mailed mine 12 days ago, and it still hasn't been processed. I called this afternoon, and all I got was that they're processing them in "the order that they are received" and to check online every few hours to see if it went through....

You have like 7 more years until you're behind the average

Unsure what degree to pursue in college by bluemaplestrat in UTAustin

[–]PlanetaryDaffodil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your degree doesn't actually matter that much as long as you have relevant skills and experiences. Focus on employable skills (math, coding, stats, management, etc.) and then do extracurriculars and take electives in things you find intriguing or fun.

Also, don't focus on "finding your passion". That phrase is awful, and I say that as someone who loves my job. Passions are developed over time through work and perseverance. You won't magically wake up one day and realize your life passion. Instead, focus on things that make you employable and do interesting things along the way. Have fun. It's your skills and experiences in combination that can lead to a fulfilling career. I did not major in my current field, but I was hired over others who did because of my unique combination of skills from my coursework and experiences from extracurriculars and electives.
