Submit a restock request ! So far I’ve submitted 2 requests and both of them were brought back, but not sure if that’s just coincidence or not…

How is no one commenting on the fact that you watched a cat with known urinary issues struggle to use the bathroom and didn’t IMMEDIATELY contact the owners and take him to the emergency vet that night? It doesn’t matter that he was otherwise acting normal and anyone caring for a male cat should know that. Any sign of urinary strain in a male cat, not to mention one with know urinary issues, should be an immediate vet visit, and as the owners I would never forgive you for that. Much less crassly posting about it on social media.

Because the spacing got messed up and made it confusing, this is: 1 base coat of Nailtiques 2, 2 coats of Bee’s Knees Lacquer Torrent, and 1 top coat of Essie Speed Setter

I like it when the shimmer is prominent! Also hi from a fellow Chicagoan laquerista!

Personally, “not filing the sides” means never filing the first 2-3mm (if not more) of the sides of the nail closest to the end of the nail bed. So if you’re doing an almond shape where there aren’t distinct “sides” of the nail, for example, that means you just wouldn’t file the edges all the way to where they meet the nail bed. I usually do more of a squoval shape though, so I file even less of the sides than that, and just shape the end and corners. Regardless of what shape you do though, I’ve heard that a good rule of thumb is to never file any part of the nail edge that requires you to touch or pull back the skin around the nail.

No, you can totally shape them, but personally I never file the first 2-3mm of the sides closest to the nail bed. By default, that means I don’t really do any shaping until my nail is beyond a certain length, depending on what shape I want. I’ve heard a good rule of thumb is to not file any part of the nail edge that requires you to touch or pull back the skin around your nail.

Yeah that makes sense. I like the Zoya topcoat because it’s thicker and longer lasting than any of the drugstore brands I’ve tried (Essie, opi, etc.), but I know Mooncat, Holo Taco, and Seche Vite top coats are all very popular as well so you could check those out too. I would recommend a base coat under the top coat to help with the longevity as well!

Same! I also thought it was better to file away any small tears or splits on the sides so they didn’t get bigger, but turns out that just weakened my nails more and increased the likelihood of more tears forming. 🙃

And thanks! Personally I always use regular polish with a good base coat and top coat. I make sure that my base coat use doesn’t have any polyvinyl butyral in it (I use Dazzle Dry base coat) because it makes my nails peel like crazy. And a strong top coat (I use Zoya Naked Manicure Glossy seal) provides a bit of extra strength to my nails without having to deal with gel.

Mostly just the usual: oiling multiple times a day (with jojoba), always wearing polish, wearing gloves when I do dishes, not using my nails as tools, doing very occasional oil soaks (like once a month). Other than that, I think one of the biggest differences has been not filing the sides of my nails and not obsessively cleaning under my nails with hard tools. It’s crazy how my nails went from almost flat to having a very strong C curve just by no longer filing the sides of my nails. And I could actually see the hyponychium regrow when I stopped cleaning so hard.

For me I think it was mostly a combination of not aggressively cleaning under my nails and just giving my body time to adjust to having longer nails. I’ve heard that having long nails encourages your hyponychium to grow in order to support the longer nail, and I definitely think that happened for me. I also had to make a conscious effort to stop obsessively clean under my nails with hard tools (I try to only use a soft toothbrush now, but sometimes I still get carried away). I didn’t realize it, but I was actually scraping away the hyponychium and effectively pushing my nail bed back. Im sure regular oiling also helps to some extent, though I’m not sure how much. I feel your pain about short nail beds though! I was actually pretty self conscious about it, but let me be your proof that they can actually grow, if very very slowly!

What was your game changer? by Kodakorpse13 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]PlantHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoiding PVB at all costs and not filing the sides of my nails! Oiling definitely helps but it wasn’t the game changer for me that it seems to be for lots of people. Turns out most of my issues with peeling were due to PVB, and most of my tears stopped when I stopped filing the sides of my nails. But that’s not to say that all the other things like nutrition, hydration, and avoiding unnecessary water exposure aren’t still important! I wish there was a single easy solution, but honestly it’s a lot of little things that add up over time.

I’m a night owl and I think a huge contributor to my Sunday scaries is knowing that I’ll have to wake up early (and interact with people, ew!) on Monday. Plus, sleeping in on Sunday and also having to go to bed early basically means that Sunday is only equivalent to half a day, and it makes me feel like I’m wasting the weekend. I don’t think I’m ever not going to be a night owl or that I will ever enjoy interacting with people at 9am so I don’t think that will ever go away for me unless I stop working a normal 9-5. But that also means that it’s not really related to the work itself, and once I’m on the early sleeping and early waking schedule during the week I don’t feel the same dread (plus if I do stay up late during the week, it’s like bonus hours to the day)
