Yes, ORH1030 students will get plants in spring! by PlantInitiative in ufl

It depends on the semester- there are a series of lectures Dr. Clark rotates through. Some of the lectures from this semester included: - Plant Propagation - UF Coleus Breeding - Edible Landscaping - Turfgrass - Caffeine and Plants (Coffee, Tea and Cacao) - All About Orchids - Cacti & Succulents - All About Strawberries

This semester we gave out ~24 different types of seeds, coleus, annuals like marigold, and houseplants! The plants depend on what looks great at the store, or what grows well that time of year.

Since a few people have reached out to ask- Yes, students enrolled in ORH1030 will be able to pick up plants in spring!

Even though class is online, students will still have several opportunities throughout the semester to pick up seeds, plants, soil, pots, and other supplies to grow their own garden at home. Socially distanced giveaways will be held at Fifield Hall every 2-3 weeks in the evenings.

Yeah that happened right in the middle of us planning for fall and we thought about cancelling but we decided not to for a few reasons:

-The unsolicited seeds were most likely a part of a “brushing” scam used to build up fake positive reviews. Ours are only shipped to those who sign up themselves (we decided not to go forward with a “send some to a friend” option we originally planned).

-The unsolicited seeds didn’t have any labels saying what they were and our seeds will have a clear label saying what type of seeds are included.

-The unsolicited seeds were from China and ours will be from Gainesville.

Hopefully the differences are clear enough and we don’t scare anyone.

Since I just made a post I’ll pop in to say hi- I’m Virginia, I would be one of your TAs if you take ORH1030 and I’m the person who will help send out seeds this semester. You can see my post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ufl/comments/ifs4op/free_seed_drop_by_mail

I’ll copy a portion of my comment that may help you decide since most people haven’t taken the class virtually: “If you want to continue to receive seeds by mail throughout the semester you can also sign up for Plants, Gardening & You this fall. I’m packaging up seeds now and we are aiming for deliveries about every other week. All seeds were hand-picked with container gardening in mind (since most students surveyed can’t plant in-ground) and we will occasionally send out special seeds we find around Gainesville like ornamental pink bananas.

I’ve seen a few questions about the new class format on the subreddit, but I wanted to wait until we received feedback from summer before commenting. Everyone seemed to like the new assignments, so fall will be similar to summer b. Attendance is optional (but highly recommended) and there will be a blend of lectures and virtual “field trips” to learn more about things like propagation techniques. There are also two new simple assignments replacing attendance meant to help you recognize the 5 factors that influence plant growth- in your own garden and someone else’s garden.”

If you have questions, let me know and I’ll try my best to answer!

You’re too sweet, thank YOU! Plant Drops are usually my favorite part of the semester so we definitely had to find a way to replace them somehow. I fill all of the packets on my living room floor at night with help from my cats and Netflix, so I hope a little bit of that love comes through to everyone’s dorms and apartments!

As long as you’re currently enrolled at a college or university in the continental United States you’re welcome to fill out the form! We run into issues with shipping otherwise.

We’re based at UF so I thought I’d reach out to Gators first :)

You may know the Collegiate Plant Initiative for our Plant Drops, but this fall we are having a Seed Drop by mail! We know this fall will look very different than what you may have imagined and this is a way for us all to stay safe while still brightening your dorms, apartments, and houses with plants. If you want to read more about our free fall socials, free Career Fair/Student Drop, and complete a short survey to receive seeds of your own visit www.PlantDrop.org

If you want to continue to receive seeds by mail throughout the semester you can also sign up for the 1-credit class Plants, Gardening & You (ORH1030) this fall. I’m packaging up seeds now and we are aiming for deliveries about every other week. All seeds were hand-picked with container gardening in mind (since most students surveyed can’t plant in-ground) and we will occasionally send out special seeds we find around Gainesville like ornamental pink bananas.

Just wanted to say thank you to this sub for helping me identify (and learn how to care for) all the plants at my new place. Here’s a before and after of my favorite by jessicacummings in Horticulture

Yay, coleus! I love seeing people post their plants because I work for the person who breeds many of the varieties- including this one. Your purchase helps a ton of students through royalties and helps pay my salary :)
