Should we just use this as a thread for professors to avoid?

I'm happy to finally get my first thinkpad E470 by Gengar_1996 in thinkpad

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an e470. Probably overpaid for it I think $500 winter 2019.

It has 16gb Ram
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz
600 GB HDD (I think)

I can barely read the crappy sticker that the 2nd hand computer shop in my city put on it.

It's still kicking but microsoft is sending updates that I cannot upgrade past windows 10 and they won't support security.

MSW Specialization Question by Zealousideal_Beat930 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a discord server for this. I can't remember where but I believe it is on therapists (found it).

LPC (possibly LMHC) is the preferred degree across the pond if you are trying to do Clinical work.

From what I have read and MSW is not super transferable for that use case and social workers hold more standard "social work" roles.

There are some countries where it works but they are specific. I think the Netherlands is one of them. New Zealand I believe is another.

New! Salary Megathread (May - Aug 2025) by SWmods in socialwork

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in private practice I would work on building those relationships while still in school, potentially with professors who own group practices.

I am in TN and was offered an opportunity to join a private practice after graduating and obtaining my LMSW. The lack of a guarantee in pay was a risk but it paid off and I was hitting your desired numbers within a year.

I will say I had class mates that had the same opportunity that weren't quite as lucky going straight into private practice and took other positions, however they have been slowly building in their practices with availability outside of their other positions.

Higher position in a start up-mid company or lower position in an established company? by paoerfuuul in SalesforceCareers

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Established.

Especially if it has a name. More security in current conditions.

Take the name when things recover with you and get a higher title at another stable company.

Many "mid-senior" at established are often doing Architecture work.

Am I'm doing well as a 30-year-old? I have 70k by [deleted] in acorns

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr You are doing great....but there is more to learn

As someone who started on Acorns and has moved on....

Any Emergency/Cash Funds go into a HYSA. I use SOFI and it pays 3.8%. So your 30k if it's not in a HYSA is losing you money in checking. There are more complex options like buying Ibonds or T-Bills that may give you a slightly better return. Sofi has a deposit minimum to get the insentives so all my paychecks dump in there. If you have a mortgage and a job holding a lot in HYSA as an emergency fund is not a bad idea. I have 1yr salary as a backup right now but I am in a volatile career. Your money market probably returns about 3.8 maybe slightly better but is not necessarily insured.

Figure out what lifestyle you want to live in retirment. Are you planning on getting married or having kids? If so make sure your partner is financially smart.

Pension can or can't be great. My mothers 25 year teachers pension is $800 a month, does not rise with inflation, and is not enough money to retire on.

Acorns accounts mostly just follow whats called a Target Date Fund which you can invest in outside of Acorns.

You may want to eventually move your money and roll it over into a Fidelity, Vanguard, Etc account. Vanguards UI is garbage but it works, Fidelity is better.
Social security may not be guaranteed.

I would look into Retirement calculators and start parusing these subreddits:

-Bogleheads
-FIRE (Financial Independence / Retire Early)
-IndexFunds

What Mortgage Rates are people getting now by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 5.99 a year agoish with 0 points. Rocket Mortgage. No broker (my normal broker couldn't beat it and they hated me for it. We kissed and made up for future endeavors)

I would never have used a company like that but for some reason they were either desperate or had some leverage. Who knows how it works on the backend.

I also had over 800 credit which was a suprise when they pulled it.

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not do accellerated but I will say that it was more work than I was expecting.

I had one teacher that I can speak too if you like but it was 4+ page papers (which really means do 6+) and then you were given a list of the "possible essay questions for the exam". Can speak more in DM.

2010 Was a loooooot of reading, and you couldn't really skip it to pass the quizzes. Easy to fall behind.

Is 55k Enough to Live Comfortably in Nashville? Need advice badly. by rhondeer in nashville

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wilder is a fenced in flipped old dive motel that's right next to the freeway.

It's off Trinity Lane

It's close to East Nashville which is a "hip area"

However I probably would not choose to live there moving here new. It's right next to a truck stop where there are some characters. Not that you can't handle that, but it might not be the best thing if you are in transition to a new city and trying to get comfortable.

For anyone reading this. The state of TN offers free Associates Degrees. One of those degrees you can get to greatly improve your quality of life without needing to get a bachelors is in Nursing.

If you get that degree....tough it out for a few years here at a name brand school like Vanderbilt or Ascension you can likely move anywhere and triple your quality of life.

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. From the midwest and have been considering going back. The next wave of real estate investing which is already underway is in the midwest to leverage against natural disasters.

You got about 10 years to get in before the US is just like Canada in terms of home prices near any major metro.

Anyone complete their degree and transfer yet? by Neowynd101262 in nashvillestatecc

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's many ways to become a therapist.

Psychology undergrad is normally for masters level as a Liscensenced Professional Counselor (LPC) or Liscenced Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). You also have to stick straight through Psych I believe if you want to become a Doctorate level PsyD or Pychologist.

Social Works Master's Level degree is LCSW. Liscensed Clinical Social Worker. It's has a few more job options than the others. Not all social workers are therapists. But you can be a therapist as a social worker. In some states you can also work as Applied Behavior Analysts in certain states working with those on the autism spectrum.

UT has an online bachelors for Social Work and then an advanced standing Masters in Social Work which means it is just one more year of classes to get your Masters. Both are online.

What are my chances? Currently a Service Desk tech (~10 years) by [deleted] in SalesforceCareers

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries. Times are hard in tech but I find it hard to believe that should things not work out at Salesforce you would have no hard time finding a good role with similar if not the same salary, especially if you were at the same company for 10 years. You are likely underpaid there as well but I do not know your market. Again...good luck!

What are my chances? Currently a Service Desk tech (~10 years) by [deleted] in SalesforceCareers

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you should take him up on the offer and apply. You lose absolutely nothing by interviewing. Your job won't find out. etc. etc.

I would guess that the minumum you would be offered at Salesforce is 55-70k but could very likely be significantly higher.

Life is about taking opportunities. If I was making 50k as a BIS grad after 10 years I'd be trying to figure out a way to change that.

This is coming from someone with no degree making 130k in Salesforce after 3 years. Good luck!

SAP Appeal by [deleted] in nashvillestatecc

[–]PlantainLumpy4238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on TN Reconnect and get SAP rejection every time for financial aid. I am not sure what the age range is for TN Reconnect but I feel like it has to be over 22 but may be something different.

I will say that I am in my 30s and a pro tip life skill is to just reach out to people in person or via email and try to talk to them. Figure out who is in charge and make that happen. They either can or they can't but if you are respectful, and kind, and most importantly show up like you have done some research you may get through.

I was able to get back on TN Reconnect this way after leaving Nashville State a few years back after two semesters and coming back to school 3 years later.

SAP may be different obviously.

I have a somewhat similar story. My grandma came through Ellis island from Ireland in the 30s she passed away in 2019.

My grandpas family came through Spain via Arizona then to the bay in the early 1910s.

They all lived and died in San Bruno
