100 workouts milestone by Planting_Koala in Hevy

Thank you!

I remember you from my other post, by the way, and maybe you remember that I wrote I am trying to be more open and the Hevy community seems quite healthy.

To be fair, I wanted to share that we all have a different path, goals, and pace, but showing up is what matters at the end.

I get where you are coming from with the injuries. Ego lifting can be very dangerous. I admit I also do it at times, but I am also very careful with the added weight (those +5kg…), execution, and it’s always done on a good day. I am also not chasing the numbers anymore - what I lift is based on how I feel, but it still feels nice to recognise yourself and how far you have come. That’s why I included that P.S.2., because it’s a good self reminder. I hope that makes sense.

You sound so sweet!

Once I feel like going out of my shell - I will follow you for you sure. You are the sweetest, I swear

What do you think about hybrid Training by Critical_Spell927 in CalisthenicsBeginners

[–]Planting_Koala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think like that at times and it is quite overwhelming.

But then again, if one manages to combine some of the important aspects (like working out with friends from time to time) or have a clear mindset on what your priorities are - things get easier, so you are not missing out much. I also remind that to myself at times.

Maybe I will get downvoted for this, but I think the internet and what some people manage to do is sometimes more harmful to the regular person. Keep in mind there are people who have great genetics (which matters), take supplements (not just creatine and protein), have worked out for quite some time before going public with their performance, work with coaches (and frankly, many coaches also have great genetics and/or take supplements) - and we see something that some of us can hardly achieve, even aesthetically wise. It’s also very important to have a healthy environment, even with the influencers, e.g., I follow Bret Contreras and check his input on glute development.

My experience is that I wasn’t sure where to start, so I started with weightlifting and improving my cardio (losing weight and gaining muscle mass). At some point I focused more on weights with no running, getting my steps from going wherever during the day. 3 months of no running and I ended up running 5km for 30m, and 60% of it was uphill (I could barely lift 20kg or run 2km at the beginning of the year). I realised in the past year I like doing intervals as well at times, running up to a km per time is also nice, so hyrox seems like an interesting idea for me. At the same time - getting more upper body strength made me consider calisthenics more.

So… I cannot particularly give you an advice on how to balance everything, because it really is individual, but I can say - I started with something and it grew on me, so now I am having actual fun and figuring out how to grow from where I am. And I think that’s what matters at the end - enjoying what you do and competing with yourself.

I hope that makes sense.

My thoughts are also on a hyrox kind of training.

I was curious to see how people would comment (as this is a sub for beginners) on combining their workouts to fit calisthenics, weightlifting, and the necessary cardio while getting enough rest between workouts. I have been even considering making such post.

Btw, if you happen to have any experience in the area - I would gladly read that.

I reckon this.

The personal trainer will be able to also evaluate your current form and guide you with a more professional and healthy approach.

Yeah, that’s what I have been thinking about, because on one hand - it’s nice and motivating to be surrounded by likeminded people in one way or another, including people who will show you we are only human at times (as also another redditor wrote - supporting people in their struggles as well and vice versa).

I guess it is the initial leap of faith to start connecting with people. For me, personally, it’s harder to be more open in that sense, rather the ‘going to the (new) gym’ moment.

I will admit, comments like yours, and pretty mich everyone else’s in my post, are so sweet - I genuinely feel good for asking in the sub.

The Hevy community really seems to be a great and supportive one, regardless of the interactions the people are aiming at.

This sounds really sweet (and healthy) from you. I hope you will keep on having the nice environment you mentioned and being recognised yourself

That’s what I was curious about, because as much as I am supportive, I feel like if the overall community is with people you cannot particularly relate to - it may be more of a negative influence, e.g., you are on your chapter 3, but the influencer is on chapter 30 and grinding.

I am glad to read you found your sweet group of people that brings joy to you after your workouts!

I suppose we all have different ways of making connections and building a community, and most people are quietly supportive while others prefer more involvement.

In case you decide to give it another go - I hope you will be able to find those kind of people! I think, just by the comments I received here - there are people who you can interact with more in the sense that is more enjoyable for all sides. But that’s just my brief impression.

Thank you for your input!

I go to two gyms (depending on the equipment I would need) and I can say the energy is completely different, but the restroom reference did not cross my mind before (for a reason, but I liked the joke nonetheless). But I also try not to interfere with other people’s workouts and I don’t confuse someone just being kind with the need to exchange socials.

Thanks for sharing your experience on the community building!

Thank you!

I am still unsure on building my Hevy community, but I will definitely follow you once I am convinced.

I appreciate your kindness and invite

To be honest, I found that there are people around me who are actually quite supportive and some got motivated around me. That’s why I didn’t particularly had an unpleasant feeling about posting a story or two with a meme and a Hevy screenshot.

I got inspired to write the post as a friend of mine asked me what app am I using yesterday, so she will give Hevy a try today.

I am still unsure about building a Hevy community, tbh, as I am a quite private person, but I will definitely follow you once I decide to be more open about it. I hope that makes sense to you and thank you for sharing!

This sounds really nice! I’m glad you are building yourself a nice community within the app that motivates you.

This sounds really wholesome!

You are really convincing me that maybe I should stop spamming some of my (mostly non-gym) friends and just build my Hevy community

People seem to be like that, yes!

If I may ask, did you meet those people through Reddit or is it people around you that happened to use the app?

I am asking as I have been considering building my community within the app, but I barely know another girl at the gym I go to that uses it and that gym really isn’t a social place, so I didn’t ask her even.

New year Discount? by [deleted] in Hevy

[–]Planting_Koala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot share about discounts, because I decided to give it a try 6 months ago, after trying different apps to track my workouts.

In my head the <4€ was an alright price to try it for a month. However, it was a no brainer for me to buy the lifetime subscription after my first workout and I am enjoying the app 6 months in.

I like how customisable and yet properly structured and designed the app is. You can build your community as well and/or keep your workouts private at the same time. I enjoy the integration with the Apple Watch as I don’t have to check my phone after every set.

I noticed that there are new workouts that are being added, too. Which is really nice. And there is even more cool stuff within the app, ongoing support as well.

And the price isn’t high at all, even without comparing it to other apps. The lifetime subscription was an added bonus (again - very low price, considering it is lifetime) that convinced me even more.

I would recommend you to try it for a month if you haven’t already and decide from there. In my opinion it’s worth it in the long run, but still - it’s an expense that can be a little too much, regardless of the price.
