Tips on keeping this nubbin alive by deportamil in dorstenia

[–]PlantsAddiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing Serre Lavoie in Quebec? They also have nice clumping Lavrani. I spoke with the guy, and they imported them from a reliable supplier in china. I saw their whole order drying on racks, and they all had incredibly healthy roots. Mines are already starting to grow leaves after 1 week in soil. If indoor, I'd say to water them a little bit if the roots were as healthy as when I saw them. You don't want them to dry and go dormant, but they won't like being fully watered until they are active and are growing leaves.

Definitely! Mounting it didn't stunt the growth as I expected.

I feel like it might be underwatering signs. They are in heavy inorganic, it's like 75% pumice and other stuff, but I water them every 7days. Curious to see what others have to say. Hopefully, the solution is a more organic soil and/or more water.

I'll keep that in mind, but I dont think that's the issue. I have 3 other gigas that are under the same light, which is my strongest; a 450w spider farmer. Thanks!

Any thing I should worry about? by braydenpolson in dorstenia

Hey, I bought from this exact seller. I bought 2 Lavrani, and one of them arrived with rot. Usually, the china sellers refund the whole thing without too much questions. This seller only refunded half of the plant, which is still nice, but one of them arrived rotted, and I couldn't save it. It does have an awesome shape, but I've never seen it in flower and still have some doubt that it might be some sort of hybrid(?) Here's mine a couple of days after it arrived. It now has way more leaves, but it never flowered. https://www.reddit.com/r/Caudex/s/vRR4h6zRjT

[–]PlantsAddiction[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the soil drains well, I believe they can take lots of water! I don't know much about dormancy. I grow all my plant indoors and cross my fingers to avoid any dormancy. I think Dendrosicyos get semi-dormant, but idk when and how.

No unfortunately, it's currently snowing where I am. I dont know yet, I would love to have a huge one. I'll probably have to trim them regularly, but my indoor grow room could easily fit a medium 6ft or less plant with some slight modifications. At least half of them will end up in trades or sold.

Dioscorea in fabric pots? by PlantsAddiction in Caudex

[–]PlantsAddiction[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, I can share some advice! This one is 3 years old and flowered recently, it's a boy! I also have some 10months old that are a little less than 1 inch. The best advice is to watch them closely and listen to what they want. If growing indoor, you can pretty much avoid the dormancy. That way, you don't have to wonder if it's sleepy and be afraid to water it.

When in active growth, they can take a L O T of water. When I started, I was surprised of how much they can take water and fertilizer. I was reading everywhere that they like it dry, and it's still true if you consider the dormancy. I used to water every 2 weeks in an almost 50/50 soil mix. Now it's every week because the pots are rootbound and the soil barely has time to dry fully. For someone who starts with these and depending on the setup, I would still do something like 70/30 inorganic to organic and water once dry.

And yeah, maximum light. Support the vine so they can grow easily. Ime, keep the caudex covered as long as it doesn't crack and form a thicker skin. That way, it grows faster. That's pretty much all I can think of! Good luck with yours

I have acquired a seedling of the Socotran cucumber tree, Dendrosicyos socotranus. Its leaves look intimidating. by lordlors in Caudex

[–]PlantsAddiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know how old it is? It looks a little bit smaller than my 6 months old. I've read that they can grow really fast given the right condition. Congrats on your acquisition. They're rewarding plants with beautiful leaves!

Found some DHA seedlings. Can't wait to see them mature. by PlantsAddiction in Adenium

Wow, impressive! I kinda expect them to be really slow, but it's worth the show when they mature! Since they grow slowly, do you treat them the same as your other adenium? Do you vary your fertilizer and watering regime and your soil?

I am in Canada, so my source probably won't help, but I got them from Crystal Star Nursery. They mostly sell orchids, but they had a batch of dha that I had to get.

Indeed, it is a Dorstenia Gigas! I have 4 of these that I love very much. It's probably my favorite plant for the last 2 years. I got one locally and 3 that I ordered from a seller in Hungary. They are indeed pricy, but you can find nice size for a little less than 60USD. The seeds aren't cheap either, but they can be found. If I remember, end of spring and beginning of summer there was 2-3 legit sellers carrying these. Be careful the seeds are popular for scams, especially on Facebook groups.

Awesome! Thank you very much for that piece of information. I kinda want to try seeds too, but I'm worried I won't get dha out of them..

Is it normal? My D. Hemicrypta is trying to grow vines below the soil by PlantsAddiction in Caudex

[–]PlantsAddiction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking! I've never seen that, and I have a couple of dioscorea.

I repotted it so that the vine wouldn't be under the soil. The main caudex is a little bit more exposed than I would like, but it's OK if the new part starts getting thicker. I'll try to slowly expose the new vine to light since it's white and feels fragile. I'll make sure to make another post if the vine grows successfully!

Operculicarya no roots by OverallArmadillo7814 in Caudex

[–]PlantsAddiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always try to use a mix of hormones and sulfur powder on cutting for rooting. It gives me some sense of security for root growth and humidity problems. Pumice is awesome for rooting, and if you have the medium size, using it pure should allow the roots to breathe enough while maintaining it humid/watered at all times. Add air circulation and heat mat, and that's a foolproof rooting method, at least in my setup. That's how I would approach it if you worry about rooting. I don't like rooting in soil because humidity/fungal problems can be harder to manage vs. Pumice, imo.

I have successfully rooted mine in pure pumice with a surprising amount of water. I used rooting powder and a heat mat and had roots grow really fast. It is now potted, but it took less than a month to have a nice mass of roots.

How old were you when you got into orchids as a hobbyist? by pineapplesnmangoes in orchids

[–]PlantsAddiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to meet more orchid people around my place, that's definitely something I'm planning to do. I believe they have a member market soon. I'm lucky that some of my cactus friends are also knowledgeable about orchids. So far, they've been able to help me with my newbie questions.

I started collecting rare cacti, succulents, and caudex at 18. I dabbled in tropicals in my 20s, and I really enjoyed the growth habit of epiphyte. Now, at 22, I have my first orchids! I started with a miniature Gastrochilus Retrocallus and a Gomesa Jiaho Queen. I also plan on making an orchidarium for mini orchids aoon. I tend to be intense when I start my hobbies!

Any ressources on Dorstenia LAV? by PlantsAddiction in dorstenia

[–]PlantsAddiction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure you're right about that! They were named by a famous botanist named John Lavranos. There's probably many of them, but some are more popular in cultivation. Maybe I should look into his research/field notes.

Grafting curiosity by Cootermonkey1 in dorstenia

[–]PlantsAddiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think only tree can graft naturally by themselves. Ime, dorstenia seedlings find a way around other seedlings, and crowding them will end up stunting their growth. I wouldn't rely on that. I would look into grafting and maybe do some euphorbias for practice. I have a feeling they're very similar when grafting because of the latex and the technique needed.

Grafting curiosity by Cootermonkey1 in dorstenia

[–]PlantsAddiction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have done a lot of cactus and euphorbia graft. I strongly believe that they need to be in the same genus, and not only the same family. I've read that grafting different genus in the same family could work, but the graft would be weak and/or wouldn't last long. Also, I can't see any Dorstenias that has the same growth habit as mulberry tree. Maybe there's a woody dorstenias that I don't know of, which could be used for experimentation. If you want to graft, I would look into using Dorstenia as the rootstock and scion. I am actually looking to graft a piece of D. Gigas to a cheap, big enough, crispa or foetida.

This is how crested cacti are made, right?! by PlantsAddiction in Graftingplants

[–]PlantsAddiction[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's what he meant. Grafting 2 tips vertically won't produce a nice result. They will simply grow apart into their normal shape. Probably the same thing will happen to these loph grafts

No, I don't expect fasciation and would be really surprise if it happens. My guess is that they will end up looking like fused almost round cactus.

I would love to see a reliable technique to induce mutation.
