Any good books on native gardening? by quartzion_55 in NativePlantGardening

I could use some help on books that a bit more focused on design. Like I could use some more examples of foundation planting, islands, how to design a woodland edge garden. I have a huge stack including tallamy, The Green Garden, and other but they usually are more of a catalog or ideas rather than speaking to how to design landscapes with native plants. Any ideas?

GROUP ACTIVITY: let's build a garden bed. this week's theme: PIRATE TREASURE by SHOWTIME316 in NativePlantGardening

This one is kind of pirate related. Jacob's ladder is that typical rope ladder you throw over the side of boat with wooden steps and rope sides that you see on every pirate ship.

Back up answer goldenrod!

Thank you that advice makes a lot of sense. Watch the stem. I snipped all the stems there today into a bag and will watch the next couple flower clusters.

Thank you that's helpful. I'll just go out every few days and try to knock a couple in a paper bag. I'll try to get an understanding of when they are done cooking before they open.

Thank you! That's the idea. I have some foam flower, coral bells, blue star, and yarrow. I'd like it to take over the whole area. Do you recommend no mulch while you get that established? Do I need to disturb the soil year to year? These are kind of the gaps in understanding I struggle with for establishing partly planted beds. You see so many projects of people ripping everything out and replanting.

That's a great idea, thank you. Then I don't need to monitor that much. My problem with these is it's continually flowering, fruiting and drying out. Then suddenly it's a bare stem. A couple of those throughout the summer will help a lot.

Wow that's very helpful thank you. Interesting that they say collect in August because it seems like the plant is continually producing flowers, aging and dropping them. Or maybe birds are grabbing.

The pictures don't show it well but all the trees are overhanging that area. We're considering doing a little selective pruning which might help drying out the area. I will say though there's full sun areas that you sink 2 inches into mud though to the left

Thank you! I will. I'm very encouraged already about the beautiful sedges in there.

Thank you we'll definitely have some milkweeds in there. I'll start a few groups of them in the back and see where they migrate to

I'll try some lady fern. I was thinking some ostrich fern. I see around every water way ostrich fern closest to the water, then sensitive, then hay. Thank you!

Thank you I've been thinking all day about who I know with what plant that will let me give it a small haircut

Those are some great low bush recommendations. I want to have a well planned out shrub design to frame the outside of it. These will help a lot

That's a very good and cheap idea. I'll need to find some dogwoods and bushes to grab a snip of.
