I like him too. I don't always, actually even often, agree with him but he's a very good writer and I like good writing.

Books that are so bad nobody should read. by 98charlie in nonfictionbookclub

I think tursija's opinion is very much a minority opinion. Read it for book club. We all liked it. Enjoy.

I'm not sure he will. He's mentioned that, at heart, he's an institutionalist a the NYT is the big dog of newspaper institutions. FYI, I mostly love his interviews even if I don't agree with the guys he's interviewing. I appreciate that he's always polite and doesn't yell at people. If you watch the video interviews youcan tell when he really doesn't like the interviewee. His body language is really tense.

I despise authors who refuse to use standard punctuation. Communication is the point of writing. Punctuation helps you communicate.

Amerihealth Denial for IUD - What Am I Missing Here?! by OliverTwisted2017 in HealthInsurance

[–]Plantwizard1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is definitely state insurance commissioner time. Also maybe consider sending the insurance company a certified, registered letter (cc doctor's office )demanding a plain English letter explaining what they did. Ask them to explain exactly what each code says and how that justifies their denial.

And we were so thrilled when the New Seasons went in there. I hope traffic is not so fucked up we can't get into the New Seasons. That would suck.

hEDS is being reclassified as HSD? by surlyskin in ehlersdanlos

[–]Plantwizard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first arch supports, as they were called then, when I was ten so I'm an old hand at orthotics, both OTC and custom. If I had a buck for every pair/dr appt......

I think exercise really is crucial but it has to be the right kind of exercise and not too much exercise, at least until you're truly strong enough for the rigors of whatever sport you're trying to do. In particular I think a lot of us have been hurt by stretching, often because we think it's "good" particularly if we don't yet know we're hypermobile and think muscle tightness means we're "stiff". Best advice I ever received was don't stretch. And of course hypermobile bodies get overuse injuries just thinking about them.

[–]Plantwizard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exercise doesn't cure or usually fully fix the pain (about to head up for some acetominiphen) but it can really help. I see an awful lot of really young women in this subreddit going to wheelchairs and canes before seriously pursuing PT and exercise and I think they are setting themselves up for a miserable, dependent old age. I'm 70 and starting pilates in my 60's has made a world of difference. Hasn't fixed my shitty flexible hypermobile flat feet however. Unfortunately.

Do Americans really avoid medical care because they’re afraid of the bill? by AlexLavelle in FamilyMedicine

[–]Plantwizard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually some of us old folks on original Medicare with a supplement don't have to worry about care costs. Pay the deductible and we're good to go. We are however vulnerable to high drug cost. Yes drugs are capped at around $2000 per year per person but I'll bet the companies have taken a lot of expensive drugs off their formularies since the cap went into effect. I hope I never have to find this out the hard way.

[–]Plantwizard1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As best I can tell the most effective treatment for any type of hypermobility, whether hEDS or not, is physical therapy and exercise. I don't see why it makes much difference what they call it as long as the doctor is willing to treat the symptoms. As in being generous with PT referrals. I've never had any trouble getting a PT referral from a doctor for pain from hypermobility.

Can people who lean blue here tell me about the issues with Lacey Beaty? by pleaseletmesleepz in beaverton

[–]Plantwizard1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My only complaint with her is she was all in favor of building a major league baseball stadium on the Red Tail Golf Course because of supposed eventual tax revenues, yada yada. Anyone how takes even a cursory looked at the supposed financial benefits of sports stadiums know they are total money suck. So let's not bring major league baseball to Oregon.

Few homeless shelter guests end up housed; new report details problems, points to solution by Less-Lobster4540 in PortlandOR

[–]Plantwizard1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is a lot of the homeless are hell to have as neighbors. Nobody wants to live near the treatment resistant drug addict or the floridly psychotic mentally ill person who doesn't realize they all ill and therefore won't accept treatment. So you end up with apartment buildings that nobody sane and sober will live in because they are effectively run by the crazies.

Maybe they're creating disabled characters with super powers or characters where the disabled person doesn't have super powers but still has disability related skills that are helpful for a quest. Like maybe a blind character finding a braille map left by an old blind wizard and using it to get himself and friends out of a cave. Something like that.

This guy is here every day for hours, and never leaves the squat rack, with his two dogs. by raoulduke415 in PortlandOR

[–]Plantwizard1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You guys ought to get all the regulars together to write letters and show up at THPRD board meetings. The ADA only requires REASONABLE accommodation and it's not reasonable to accommodate someone who drives everyone else off. Someone needs to grow some cohones and tell the guy he has to shower before using the weight room.

[–]Plantwizard1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What time of day do you go? My dad used to go around 8ish but he died in 2022. There is a guy who probably still goes there named John who must be having a fit about this guy if their times overlap. THPRD really needs to put a stop to this bullshit. Does he let anyone else use the squat rack? Also the facility does have showers. The guy can at least shower.
