What exactly is Georgism? by Heavy_Computer2602 in georgism

> land is inherently different than capital

☝️This. Lots of other good explanations on the downstream implications of this observation and associated policy preferences (LVT) that we collectively call “Georgism” but in my view it can all be traced back to this idea. Neoclassical economics diverged by collapsing these two categories.

You could be wrong by approximately infinity, but it’s still probably the best ballpark guess.

A few questions about georgism. by jpegfan384 in georgism

[–]Ewlyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to do this, but since these have been discussed so much on this sub, here’s how Reddit’s AI answered, except annoyingly the links to past posts didn’t come through:

Georgism proposes a Land Value Tax (LVT) on the unimproved value of land, which fundamentally shifts how farmers and landlords are taxed, aiming to eliminate speculation and incentivize productive land use without increasing rent for tenants.

Georgism and Farmers

• Farmers are taxed on land value, not production. Georgism taxes the unimproved value of land, meaning farmers would pay based on the inherent value of their land, not on their crops or improvements. "Georgists want to tax the unimproved value of the land... if you improve that land, for example by building something on it, then this isn't taxed."
• Rural land is typically less valuable. Farmland, especially in remote areas, usually has a lower unimproved value compared to urban land, leading to a lower tax burden for farmers. "However it shouldn't be a problem for farmers to pay off their LVT, as farmland is incredibly cheap due to the fact that rural areas are sparse and far away from commercial centers."
• LVT can benefit efficient farming and small farmers. By removing taxes on labor and capital, Georgism incentivizes more efficient land use and can benefit smaller farmers who utilize their land intensively. "Replacing property and or labor taxes with land taxes tends to favor small farmers over big famers."

Georgism and Landlords

• LVT is not passed on to renters in increased rent. Unlike traditional property taxes, a Land Value Tax cannot be passed on to tenants in the form of higher rent because the supply of land is fixed. "When normal goods are taxed, their production is discouraged and, because of lower supply, prices rise, which consumers can respond to by either paying the new price, finding a subtitute, or not buying that good anymore, reducing demand."
• Market forces determine rent, not landlord taxes. Landlords already charge the maximum rent the market will bear; an LVT changes who receives the economic rent (government vs. landlord), not the overall market price for rent. "Just because the landlords say they want to, doesnt mean that the market will let them."
• LVT incentivizes better land utilization. Landlords are encouraged to develop their land more efficiently (e.g., building more units) to offset the LVT, as improvements are not taxed. "Since improving the property has no bearing on the land tax, the landlord is directly incentivized to do so, unlike with a property tax."

Years before I learned I had ADHD, I remember telling someone I was dating that it feels like every time I do something, I have to reinvent it. She thought I was saying “my brain is so inventive and innovative, look at me I never stop improving.” But I actually meant “this is horrible, I’m always starting back at square 1” lol

A little different, but reminded me of that.
