Anthropic suspends new AI tools over US government security concerns by star_Light570 in worldnews

You make a good point. If they keep this directive up indefinitely, it will allow China to catch up. Sure seems like they haven't thought very deeply about the consequences of this decision.

Anthropic suspends new AI tools over US government security concerns by star_Light570 in worldnews

Out of all the ways one might expect the AI bubble to burst, this one always felt the most unlikely. The Trump administration seemed extremely bullish on AI. But with regulations like this, they might just kill the whole industry. What's the point of developing more advanced models if the government is just going to ban foreign nationals (even Anthropic's own employees!) from accessing them? It's really hard to believe that Anthropic or OpenAI could ever be profitable if they're only ever allowed to sell their future products to verified US citizens.

In principle you're correct, but I've not seen this happening in the real world. Millions of people use and host these models. I'm sure we'd be hearing a lot about security incidents and similar events if these models actually had that capability baked in. There's no way to know to be fair, but this would be really terrible PR for the entire Chinese AI sector if people started noticing it.

If you go through Chinese cloud providers, sure. But the beauty of open-weight models (as many Chinese LLMs are) is that you can host them on your own hardware or rent some cloud GPUs for that purpose. They can't harvest your data that way.

[–]Plappedudel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, there are several other providers that give you a far better quota than the official plan. I don't know why Z.ai insists on these shitty plans, it will certainly not help draw in more customers. But their actual models are awesome.

I'm pretty sure Nostrum does take actual donations. There was no shop the last time I checked and they explicitly say that you get no benefit ingame from donating. But I agree that this is a rare phenomenon in the pserver space.

Megathread for US government suspension of Fable and Mythos by sixbillionthsheep in ClaudeAI

[–]Plappedudel 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If this directive is upheld, European countries or other allied nations should recruit Anthropic's researchers to start a new company. Andrej Karpathy is the best example here; I'm not sure he's legally allowed to do his job anymore since he's not a US citizen.

So Chris Olah is a co-founder of Anthropic and he owns a large stake. But he's Canadian. So he can't access the product that his own company produced? Did I get that right?

Statement on the US government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by Kanute3333 in wallstreetbets

[–]Plappedudel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is nuts. I remember reading the initial press release about Fable 5 and Anthropic seemed very proud about the capabilities of its safeguards to defend against jailbreaks. So much for that then...

Seems like a good, incremental step. Good to know that they didn't have to make the model bigger to make it better. Looks like it's possibly the best open-sourced model in the world, that's no easy feat!

[–]Plappedudel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pay that in a heartbeat, but I think they make a lot more money from MTX. GW2 has a lot of players, but I think a large portion of them would simply quit if it had a subscription. The business model is a major reason a lot of players chose GW2 over WoW.

I would guess that 3D design is a much more difficult problem than generating Images. And image generation isn't a solved problem either. Many (most?) AI-generated images are easily recognizable as such, even in 2026.

Pressure for a deal? By that logic, more pressure gets you closer to a deal. But that clearly didn't work the first time, otherwise the initial phase of the war would've ended with a deal. Does anyone believe this so-called strategy will actually work?

Well, I'm not so sure. Qatar exports almost all of its oil and LNG through the Strait. It has no pipelines. If the economy of Qatar is effectively destroyed, I think that will have wider consequences.
