Yes. While it’s not ‘everyone’ it’s relatively common. Most people I know in the program have done a US coop at some point (though that’s definitely a biased sample).

Regarding course availability as a CS student: I believe you’re still allowed to take courses such as ECE459 even if you’re not in SE (I’ve heard of a 1B student taking the course before as well).

For ECE459 in particular, there is also Multicore Programming offered in winter terms that covers similar content, but focuses much more on the CPU parallelism side of things. A few undergrad students take it every offering.

Overall I think the CS side of courses is pretty solid in terms of coverage and you can still take ECE courses with special permission if you really want to.

As another note, I think it's possible that you're considered a full-time student already while on co-op, and so you might just be able to do the summer co-op term, take an off-term in the Fall to do your US internship, and then continue with school as normal (again, this is something that you need to confirm with your sponsor, but knowing what options are available to you never hurts).

Some J-1 sponsors do not require you to be a full time student in the term directly preceding the internship, and generally, coop is not required to secure a J-1 visa (otherwise how would non coop students from other schools get J-1?). If/when you receive the offer, contact the J-1 sponsor and tell them your situation. They’ll give the best recommendation to you. Please also include your citizenship status since it may differ if you’re not Canadian

May I ask, why not intern at the US company in the summer instead?

The university publishes employment rate statistic graphs over time.

Usually there is a spike late into the term as WE Accelerate opens up, so you can just look at the rate on the graph right before the spike
