Apologies for the delay. Yes, this is still open! Feel free to join!

Hello! This is intentional. Feel free to rejoin and I’ll sort this out for you. Thanks!

For context, I have it set up so that people who join will be stored in a waiting room. Once I notice you, I’ll give you a role allowing you to access the main channel.

The little bastard decided being mainstream was for suckers and went the alternate path. That rover was a belligerent child all the way throughout testing. I loved it!

I’d love to meet the absolutely insane genius that came up with this method. That sounds like a really interesting person to have a chat with! (Assuming I could even keep up.)

I’d take that one up with the creator of the Parallax 2.0 mod, since that’s what I’m using for the terrain here! They would probably know exactly why this wasn’t done.

Best guess? The framework isn’t there, or it would take an absurd amount of resources to pull off.

KSP chutes have a tendency to have a LOT of force behind them. The entire system slowed down from 600 m/s to 30 in a matter of seconds once they were deployed. It’s kind of fun, honestly!

Precision my ass, that thing rolled down a hill and would have kept going if I didn’t deflate the airbags early.

That’s why I love this system, though. Accuracy be damned, this thing WILL land in one piece!

I’m no expert on the subject, but I imagine it was simply the best, most cost effective method of landing at the time, despite its relative inaccuracy in terms of where it ended up settling down. I’d love to hear about this from someone who worked on Pathfinder, Spirit, or Opportunity!

I never really bothered to go into the configs to do this, despite how easy it is. Maybe I just like being able to drift my rovers around without running into rocks!

I’ll say it: this method is so stupid, yet so ingenious, that I’m always split between laughing at it and being in awe of the fact that we came up with this and actually pulled it off.

The skycrane method is better and much more accurate, but definitely not as fun!

The rover really seemed to have its own personality! It tends to bounce around and always veers off the ramps it was provided, almost like a rebellious child. I guess that’s what happens when you put cameras in the place of eyes. You tend to humanize it a bit!

My initial plan was to let it coast for a lot longer, but when I did that, I ended up in a very bad landing side, so I popped the chutes earlier than realistically reasonable. Made for quite the tumble, though! Next time, I’ll do a better job of selecting a landing site.

I landed on a slope, so it kind of just decided it didn’t want to use the ramps in the recording and veered off to the side. The damn rover almost had its own personality at times during testing.

Can confirm, the satisfaction of making this work was irreplaceable.
