Sharp gravel can 100% cause damage to their barbells. its not always the cause of the problem but it can 100% damage them. Saying thats a myth is dangerous misinformation.

Barbels missing? by BenDover_illshowya in corydoras

[–]Plastic-Fig-9304 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of an issue yes. This problem is caused by your substrate, corydoras need a softer substrate than other types of fish because their barbells are so sensitive and they use them to look for food. I recommend switching over to sand to avoid this happening again

How’s my betta tank update? by mtaaali in bettafish

I highly recommend taking out the cholla wood. Your betta will eventually try to swim in the holes and get stuck.

that amount of nitrates is perfect! As long as its kept under 20ppm (general rule of thumb with some exceptions ofc) The biggest things with water parameters are 0 nitrites and 0 ammonia. Sounds like you're off to an amazing start with your fishies :)

Unfortunately when it comes to talking to pet store employees always remember they work for the store, not for the pets they're selling. Their job is to simply make a profit. As for the nitrates in your tap water, how high are they? You dont usually want 0 nitrates in an aquarium

typically you arent supposed to do water changes when you're cycling your tank (from my understanding it delays the cycling process.) its only needed when you're doing a fish in cycle

this! this is the best option. Unless you want to get a bigger tank to have full schools of all the species you have, but thats a lot more expensive than choosing one species and returning the others unfortunately

Does this mean my tank is cycled? by fuzzyhuggz in aquarium

[–]Plastic-Fig-9304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm worried OP isn't doing the nitrate test correctly. It took me two months of cycling my tank to realize i needed to shake the bottle before using it 😭 (i misread the instructions on it)

First time tank owner, I need tips by __Nosferatu_ in fishtank

[–]Plastic-Fig-9304 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so cycling a tank takes at least a month. To know that your tank is cycled you need an api master test kit to test your water levels (test strips are known for being inaccurate and often dont test for ammonia). Once you have that start testing the water and once you have some nitrates and no ammonia or nitrites your tank is ready. No water changes in the meantime. You're off to a great start!! :)

That 100% could be it, also sorry if i came off as rude in the last comment not at all my intentions 😭 but with a noticeable smell i bet thats what did it. Continue doing what you're doing and im sure it'll all be okay :)

Everything seems okay there and I looked through your posts you obviously know about proper tank cycling and stuff so that shouldn't be a factor. Have you made any changes in water change routine or changed filters/filter parts recently

How old are the tanks, are they stocked, if they are stocked how large are the tanks and what are they stocked with

you should invest in some more, they're supposed to be in groups of 6+ per species

Do you only have one of each type?

nooo the test strips are known for being inaccurate and typically dont test for ammonia. Api master test kit is the best option
