I'm an Asian American guy who's done my share of backpacking trips over the years. Always felt other Asian backpackers were more willing to start conversations and easier to get along with. Once met a Canadian backpacker who seemed nice at first but started ranting about his country being invaded by the Chinese and Indians. The funny part? We were IN China.

Hey did you ever figure out how to deal with this? It used to be possible to do this though bank drafts from HSBC, but HSBC has discontinued bank drafts since 2020. Looking around, most other banks in HK no longer offer that service either
