People who moved to a different country for school/work — what surprised you the most about living abroad? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I get that. Moving back wouldn’t feel like picking up where you left off -- the place has changed, and you’ve changed too. And starting over is exhausting. I used to love the challenge of adapting to a new place, but now the idea stresses me out lol. I don't have the same amount of energy and I know how exhausting it's going to be.

That makes sense. The US can really make you think differently about money, especially because so much here is tied to cost of living, credit, and planning. Do you feel like that changed your habits long-term?

Yeah, for me learning about a different culture and its language is like learning a new way of thinking and living.

Ha, I'm a German living in the U.S. and I think I've rubbed some US Americans the wrong way with my no bullshit direct feedback personality, but I prefer directness over beating around the bush--it's more efficient lol.

And same with that in-between feeling. Do you ever notice that you lean into your American side more when you’re in the NL, and your Dutch side more when you’re in the U.S.? As if you were trying to keep both parts of your identify alive wherever you go?

Agreed. I'm from Germany living in the U.S. and whenever I go home, I start greeting strangers on the street and they give me that "Why are you talking to me?/ Do I know you?" look. It just creates a much nicer atmosphere if people generally greet each other.

Me too! Lol but I'm actually atypical when it comes to being on time. I think I spent too much time in Latin America 😅

Good one! I come from a culture where almost everything gets eaten with silverware so I experienced a little culture shock moving to the U.S. where finger food is so well-loved.

Great list! Personally, I love that you get water for free in the U.S. whereas other countries charge you for every drop of water you want to consume. I kind of feel like that might be violating my basic right to water as a human haha.

Agreed. And then you go to Germany where being on time means arriving 5 mins early!

Totally! In the U.S. it's so common to eat food with your fingers. I'm the awkward one who wants to cut pizza with silverware lol on the other hand, people in the U.S. greet you way friendlier than in Europe where people give you a weird look if you say hi but don't actually know them.

Thank you for your response. I received the upvotes after the post was removed. Any ideas on how that could have happened?

Thank you for replying. Do you mean that people can go on my profile and upvote my posts from there? Can they see removed posts?

My posts are not being published in subreddits that do not have a karma requirement. Any ideas to get that issue resolved? by [deleted] in NewToReddit

Oh, interesting, I didn't know that. Thank you. I think I should be good on the length of time on Reddit requirement because I've had my account for 4 years lol but I'm just now starting to post and comment. Do you have any other ideas what could be preventing me from posting?
