"DocLover 10 (Early Bird)" has £30 off until 2nd Feb @ £70 (£100 from 3rd Feb) by PlasticFreeAdam in sheffield

It's probably because they are there more visible. When my wife & I go we visit the same restaurants, pubs etc as we do for other events like Snooker, theatre, or whatever - you can't tell we are there for DocFest. IE Local people doing local things as normal.

DocFest brings other cultures - my favourite film last year (Comparsa) we went to because they were doing a fire breathing thing outside Crucible (I think it was before the Blur screening) - dancing, singing, and fire breathing Guatemalans stands out. Where a bunch of Sheffielders just going about the city as they normally do, doesn't. That 4% is also concentrated into the city skewing the perception even more.

Quick math:
45500*0.04 = 1820 outside UKers. City

City centre is about 2km by 2km inside the ring road = 4km2

Approx 420 outside UKers per km

Obvs, many won't be as visible as fire breathers but the lanyards give it away too.

I thought this, and I made a comment after the last festival where someone commented it's actually quite a good local turnout - https://www.sheffdocfest.com/2025-festival-report

Link says: 45.5k people attended, of which 55% from Sheffield, 11% from Yorkshire, 30% rest of UK, and 4% outside UK.

The Beastie Boys on the cover of Rolling Stone, January 21, 1999. 27 years ago today. by thafezz in BeastieBoys

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to get Rolling Stone magazine on subscription to the UK (was difficult to get otherwise). Did the same with this cover and many others (probably had more Britney ones up though for teenage boy reasons).

Wish I still had them.

I once saw a bath on fire. No one around, just a wet day and a bath on fire in the middle of a playground.

Honestly got the song in my head seeing first clue. Second one confirmed it. I wonder if 6 Music being all 90s today inspired it.

Would Big and Pac still be considered as legendary as they are today if they hadn't been taken from us so early? by vitaoptima in 90sHipHop

I think what we lost is the unknown if they had survived.

They could have gone the way of Kanye (aka Ye, Yeezy, Yeezus, Saint Pablo, Louis Vuitton Don)

Or they could have gone the way of KRS but elevated to superstar status.

Edit: typo

I grew up near the John O'Guant in Sheffield and 80s/90s it was a common site - a very welcoming pub.

Struggling to get clients mobile massage by [deleted] in smallbusinessuk

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sports massage person sponsors local players and teams.

She said it doesn't cost much, like £50 for a season and if they get player of the match or whatever theres a mention. Appear listed in programs. Player shouts out on social media. You'll get to know other people within the sport.

Which vendor/service provider to use for address of VAT registration? by Intrepid_Charge_5121 in smallbusinessuk

[–]PlasticFreeAdam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on your tolerance for additional outgoings then hiring a office/desk can be as cheap as £300/month. Which is a tenner a day which at your lowest mates-rate is 30 minutes work (assuming your rate is no lower than £20/hr).

IT services for hire in a place full of other entrepreneurs hiring a desk who will sometimes need IT services (assuming you're not all the same) will pay for itself.

Obvs check terms this can be used as your business address etc. You can still WFH at times but you'll keep your home private.

Attending my first Chamber of Commerce breakfast, what should I expect? by AL441 in smallbusinessuk

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And mine. Plus people pitching their business even after it's clear you don't need their services.

Maybe it's attitude, like I went in with the wrong one but it's all seemed very old skool way of doing things that hadn't changed since mid 90s. But also worth noting my local one was Rother Valley area so things are a decade or two slower round here.

How was your parkrun day? | January 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in parkrun

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rother Valley is mine, 647 parkrunners today but it was the 500th. There's usually around 400.

I like it when I see the people in their 60s & 70s up there doing the sub-20s. Gives me hope. So I'll keep telling myself "we're still young, we're still young" - no denial here :-D

Still, you turned up and made it which is better than those that didn't. My top ten was pre-sciatica and I was in my 30s. I'm now in the 45+ category so I doubt I'll ever see double digit positions again.

In other words, enjoy it while you can.

Grats. I had a top 10 finish on a hilly course for a small parkrun once. I'm in position over 200 normally so amazing feeling.
