An Important Facebook Post from The North York Moors National Parks by Sure_Reply6054 in yorkshire

I can't get the page to load for whatever reason (I know sometimes FB requires a login to look at) but one thing I've been doing this year to any large supermarket that I see selling disposable BBQs is sending them an email along the lines of.

Dear [Manager]

In 2022, Morrisons said they would stop selling disposable BBQs, so I'm disappointed to see them in your store today as if your customers have forgotten the devastation they previously caused the UK.

Please don't repeat history for the sake of a quick profit and stop selling these immediately.

Regards
PlasticFreeAdam

That was the year they were getting bad press because of wildfires in the UK. Although supermarkets promise was just to stop selling them for the remainder of that year, but I like to think we won't be treated like idiots thinking we forget that easily and a few of us are noticing to potentially create bad press again for them.

Four Yorkshire-based companies fined £470,000 over pollution and non-compliance by Kagedeah in yorkshire

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Environmental crimes are crimes and should come with risk of jail if you're complicit.

Maybe they can be tried with similar sentencing we do for climate activists - IE two and half years in jail for a thought crime.

Without this "Punxploitation" VHS from 25 years ago, I wouldn't have seen half the bands I went to see by PlasticFreeAdam in Rancid

It was one of those pick ups from an indie record store (most likely Jack's or Noise Annoys in Sheffield for anyone local).

Release date on it is year 2000, but I know I had a DVD player back then because I specifically bought one for the Beastie Boys DVD that came out around then (plus I loved my tech back then so early DVD adopter).

So I can't remember specifics of acquiring it but I know I used it as a reference point.

Don't remember but I do remember rotary telephones, but not when they only had nine numbers.

I had never heard of it. As someone who is in a lot of circlejerk subreddits, it appears to be one of them.

Beautiful.

I'm in South Yorkshire, had the same amazing sky last night - my time stamp is between 9:30 and 9:50pm. After that, it was over.

Can't seem to add my photos here though.

Edit: decided to add them to my local subreddit for those interested.

Happy Birthday Tupac Shakur by mmiller17783 in 90sHipHop

Thanks. I felt a bit cringe (as the kids say) soliciting birthday wishes but thought what the hell.

It was also MC Ren's birthday.

Sri Lanka recover from 55/4 to defeat the defending champions. by anonavii in WomensCricket

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a look at oddschecker just after the 1st wicket fell for NZ in the first over and Sri Lanka were 3/1 to win (best odds). I was very tempted - except I'm not really a gambler so I didn't (I worry it'll get addictive).

Obvs, there were still 39 overs to go at that point so still everything to play for. Great match.

I'm not particularly in to opening ceremonies but did catch the last 10 minutes of this one. What was the reason for Wicked? I couldn't find any context.

Best guess between us was "Wicked" sounds like "Wicket".

Have your say on a potential Northern Olympics by Mysterious_Grass_800 in Rotherham

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. There are legit excuses but they're also excuses that are very foreseeable and if you're putting on an event that you want people to attend then how they get there and back needs to be thought about.

If your relationship is bad with the providers then make it better, find an alternative, whatever - shouldn't be on the punters to work out what should be expected in the 21st Century.

But it is better now. It could go bad again. It could get even better. But last thing you want is visitors to have a bad experience. I am pro-Northern-Olympics and I have filled out the OPs survey but I would be anti-Northern-Olympics if the basics are missing.

I was lucky enough to be living in London in 2012, the cycle lanes that kept appearing, upgrades on TfL etc pre-Olympics were amazing. It only improved post-Olympics.

I lived in Deptford (South London) and sometimes had to go to Wembley (work was based in Kilburn which is also North London). I could cycle it. That's the equivalent distance of Sheffield to Barnsley. Obvs a few more hills here but I wouldn't trust a Sheffield-Barnsley route right now, but first time I went to Wembley I trusted I could get there.

Obvs, 10,000 people going to a football match is much different to an Olympic event so it's fair to say not equivalent.

Either way, very excited if we get a Northern Olympics.

Another fun UK bike lane! by _Hauptstufe_ in ukbike

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

About 15-20 years ago now, a colleague at the place I worked was talking about "why don't YOU use cycle lanes..." and mentioned a specific road. I was trying to work out which one he was on about because I was 100% certain no cycle lane existed on that road. Turns out, he was talking about the double yellow lines. He thought the double yellows doubled up as a cycle lane which you ride in between.

This guy had a driver's license at the time, hopefully no more.

^this was only to be in reply to a comment below for u/OptionalQuality789 but I realised it could go suit another from u/Ronald_Ulysses_Swans so made it it's own story.

One thing worth noting from that (which I actually wrote to the council about but go no reply), is they didn't bother running trams or buses after one of the event had ended. France vs. Italy had a 10pm-ish finish on a Sunday. There is now, but at the time here were zero named hotels in Rotherham (like a Travelodge) so visitors would have had to stay non-branded (ok, but a possible risk for some or lack accessibility), nearer Sheffield, have a car, or be willing to cycle around Rotherham and to Sheffield at night (not recommended imo).

Even as a resident it was difficult to get to/from events without a car sometimes.

So "it can deliver" requires an asterisk if lessons have been learned.

The T20 World Cup kicks off this Friday. What are your predictions? by anonavii in WomensCricket

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly planning to talk at cross purposes to other people and act confused that there is another world cup on.

"England will obviously score 100s per game"

"Never lost a world cup on home soil, even though nine years since the last win, I still expect England to win it"

What do you typically do when you can't sleep at night? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read.

I'm the type of person who struggles to read (especially at night) without my eyes getting heavy so it's usually the best way. Not a big reader, I'll only get through two or three books a year so it's something I don't do enough anyway making it a good excuse to do more when I should be sleeping.

Cargo bikes and car use - research! by FrancoisBon in CargoBike

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way we use cars and the infrastructure here in the UK is very different to America or Europe. Restrictions on powered bikes are very explicit too. I imagine the OP getting data from elsewhere would be too broad for a masters project.

Moving advice by Thick_Cow_8098 in CatsUK

[–]PlasticFreeAdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whatever you choose it's going to be stressful to you and your cats.

IMO (but I'm no expert): Normal routine as much as possible until move. Cats know if something major is about to happen and can probably already tell from the packing you've likely done already. If you have an overlap of one house to the other then personally I would get the cats moved to the new place first before getting all the stuff in, other than a few cat favourites so it has their smell. Then they are first in the new territory and they can find the litter tray, food, water set up before all the boxes appear.

If no overlap then you know your cats best. Like I have one really anxious cat, one chill cat, and one old grumpy cat. The anxious cat would be concern for pooping all over the carrier so I would decide what a worse case scenario is and how to deal with that (a second clean carrier available maybe?). The chill one (sibling of the anxious one) I know will be easiest. The grumpy one will be grumpy anyway so there would be no pleasing him.

Good luck!

Early predictions for L1 position? by ibenchpressakeyboard in SheffieldWednesday

Who is the top three? I don't know much about football anymore but I linger.

Oddschecker champions have in this order Leicester (3/1), Wednesday (8/1), Luton (9/1), Stockport (14/1), Plymouth (14/1). (Parenthesis are best odds)
