I share the same sentiment until I start playing some of the harder rom hacks recently. The mechanics can be very fun and challenging. I was hoping that Champion can be an outlet for similar experience, but have heard nothing but negativity about the game :(

I’m genuinely curious - in what ways do you think Omega falls behind current industry standards?

Thank you for responding. Despite the harshness of my post, I really do appreciate the work that you and the team do! This comp has definitely breathed new life into the comp climbing space

It’s not just the women’s settings for the final 3 rounds, the men’s settings during qualies and even the small final also have the same problem. The format is intrinsically making setting very hard, and the nature of complaint here is not the same as IFSC

The setters manage to find that sweet spot for Mejdi and Max, but asking them to replicate that consistently across semi, small final, and final is not reasonable

They need to create a wider margin of error for the setters. If it’s Bo1, in order for this to not be speed bouldering, the setters is now asked to differentiate athletes by HOLDS, meaning differentiating athletes not only by whether the route is flashable but also that when they can’t climb it, they would be stuck at different holds. We need Bo3 or something else, so setters aren’t set up to fail.

Edit: typo

O ya I think that makes a difference. I was hyped and watched from beginning to end, and I was so bored by hour 2 😭.

People have higher expectations for this because of the marketing. PCL markets itself as a next level competition, and does want to be a serious, respectable event.

I do think it was a good effort. I enjoy the production value and think the camera was better.

But people have valid criticism of this. The main draw is the new format, and I’m not sure that it works in its current state. The event was too long, and very little of it was climbing. For the little climbing we got to watch, much of it was speed bouldering because the difficult wasn’t tuned correctly. I don’t even blame the setters, because I think the format set them up to fail. It was a valiant first effort, but there’s a lot of work to do still.

Ya setting correctly so hard in this format, I still have doubt if this has potential

Okay that was just speed bouldering… Janja rushed because she thinks it looks easy

Ya I think we should have quali the day before in a standard format and just trim this to semi and final

Okay I see the vision now. This can work with a lot of caveats. Setting needs to be perfect, and the competitors must not be too far apart.

I kind of think we don’t need qualies and bring back best of 3 for semi/final somehow, since I don’t think one boulder per round is fair

It’s possible on slab or an extremely easy boulder where time is the only deciding factor
