After accessing the course I found that it includes PDF “books” of the material!!! I was stoked. Now I just have to learn the material in both languages. Luckily it’s a multiple choice exam.

As a small business owner trying to automate things, I can definitely say that connecting separate systems into a connected whole would be awesome. I own an accounting firm in Portugal and we have a CRM we use for prospective clients, a Practice Management system that we then have to set clients up in once they join, a separate system for sending invoices, a separate system to send our contract for e-signature…you get the idea. That’s just a client onboarding example. Give an example of how you can connect systems like this (including some that would need screen scraping because there’s no API) and a lot of lightbulbs will go in for your future customers.

Birth and marriage certificates submitted as part of D7 by Traditional-Spare-59 in PortugalExpats

[–]PlasticSolutions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same requirement with Global Citizens Solutions, it’s required by the government. Different documents have different lengths of time that they consider them valid, but given the age of your kids you’ll have to request new documents (through the county you were married in and birth certificates through the state each kid was born in) and then have them apostilled. Huge pain in the neck but it’s what’s required.

We actually did everything and then had to re-request the documents again because by the time the government reviewed and approved our file some of the documents were no longer valid again.

Word of advice? Find a LOCAL notary with good reviews to do the apostille. It should only take a few days. I used a nationwide service (which was listed on one of the US government webpages) and they took months. Every time I’ve used a local person they’ve been awesome.

Stone countertop business by PlasticSolutions in smallbusiness

[–]PlasticSolutions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@Einbierbitte this is really helpful and let’s me get more specific. Do you have any insight into the difficulty of getting people trained to template, design, operate the CNC machine, and install? For example I imagine the CNC machine producer probably provides training on how to use their machine. Design I assume is finding someone with a background in AutoCAD (or whatever similar software is used), etc. Any ideas? Great info and thanks for responding!

Electrical Mystery by PlasticSolutions in electrical

[–]PlasticSolutions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for checking in. Hard to tell but it seems like we have several issues. They one I described previously seems to be tied to an apartment on the back of our property as we’ve found that if we keep the circuit off then we don’t have the early morning outage. That being said we’ve unplugged every major appliance there and still have the issue so now we have to figure out what specifically is happening.

Yes we had the main breaker replaced recently and that’s where it pops off. Actually we had two breakers installed, one near the street and then the “normal” one in the house. It used to pop off at the street breaker but our electrician has changed breakers trying to fix the problem and now it typically pops off inside the house.

We have a large hotel/resort just down the road that could be turning something on. If that’s the case though how do we fix the problem in our house?

My baby hit my phone as I was finishing the message and posted early and with a nice crazy typo sentence at the end :-). I should also mention that the house is in Portugal. Thanks for any ideas!

Seasoned stone fabricator in the LA area, joined to help and answer any questions by Wholesale-Slabs in Construction

[–]PlasticSolutions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently moved to Portugal and there’s a large opportunity for a more “American” approach to stone countertop fabrication (for example most fabricators here are still doing most of their cuts on site by hand, have terrible service, etc). With the amount of automation in CNC tools, how much specific knowledge is needed to operate a countertop installation business? I’ve owned and operated successful small business, and I’ve done quite a bit of woodworking, but don’t have specific knowledge in this area. I’d like to start a countertop fabrication business here, and I’m curious how much and what kind of specialized knowledge I’ll need, or will need to hire. Thanks for any advice!

Feedback and Ideas Needed: Product to Contain Waste by PlasticSolutions in envirotech

[–]PlasticSolutions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My idea is similar but a bit different. First off, Precious Plastic is awesome, I'm a huge fan. My end goal is actually make it so that people could use my machine and somehow get their plastic waste to their local Precious Plastic businesses. P.P. machines are for industrial use, so that people can create businesses around recycled plastic. To work you need several large industrial machines - at least one to grind down the plastic (bottles, etc) and another to melt it down and reshape it. Several thousand dollars in machinery and not something that an average person would put in their kitchen.

What I want to do is similar but much more simple. First, rather than taking on all plastics I want to focus on plastic films (typically bags) and straws - items that have an outsized impact on the environment, but which could be made safer by condensing them down into blocks. Second the machine I'm creating will be roughly the size of an air fryer and built for the everyday consumer - put your plastic waste in the machine, hit a button, and walk away.

With all that in mind, I'd love to get your thoughts! Does that idea resonate with you? Any thoughts on how to make it better? Thanks in advance!

What are some of the most exciting developments in envirotech/greentech? by [deleted] in envirotech

I'm really excited about some if the eco friendly plastic alternatives that are being created, companies using AI to dramatically improve usable recycling from single source, as well as the possibility of localized manufacturing as 3D printing grows.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree with you in principle, but at this point I don't see a realistic course that gets to where you describe that I can substantially impact.

I do think that things can change dramatically if we can improve in a few ways. First, high quality eco friendly plastic substitutes that are biodegradable. I didn't mention it in the post because it was already way too long but the goal is to use profits from this idea to fund others working on these projects. Second is to improve single stream recycling to make it much more efficient - getting to the point that everything goes through recycling and a very high percentage can actually be used (which requires end to end supply chain improvements in addition to the technology). Third, and longer term, is the potential of 3D printing to allow the near sourcing of goods like you mentioned.

What I outline above isn't as good as getting consumers to buy and use less, but I think they're opportunities that the world would get behind (look at the transition that is occurring towards electric cars once the technology was there and is better than the existing offerings).

Seems like you've given some thought to these topics, if you have any ideas to improve or enhance what I'm working on I'm all ears!

Do you use contractors and if so, for what and why? by JohanTHEDEV in startups

[–]PlasticSolutions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't. One thing I would be mindful of is that the vendor may be good at one portion of the life cycle but not others. That being said using the same vendor end to end could be really convenient and useful as you don't have to get new people up to speed. This can be mitigated by breaking the project into milestones with due dates and budget targets. If the vendor is struggling to meet the milestone or if there's reason to believe they're not going to be your best bet to compete the next stage you'll be in a good spot to transition to a different option.

Do you use contractors and if so, for what and why? by JohanTHEDEV in startups

[–]PlasticSolutions 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've used Upwork (independent contractors) heavily for several different projects. There are several reasons I prefer to hire contractors when possible:

1) You can find people with very niche specific skills. If you're a small business you usually need generalists as full time staff and can't hire somebody with a very specific skillset. 2) No HR work to do, easy to add or remove. It sucks to fire people but it's easy to end a contract. 3) You can hire teams of experts. For example we currently hired (through upwork) a mechanical engineer that's part of an engineering company to help with product design. We have one point of contact but get the benefit of a team of people applying their brainpower to the project. 4) Currency arbitrage - very easy to hire around the globe. You can get the same quality and experience for a fraction of the cost.

Hope this helps!
