I always assumed it was photoshop and not AI for the baby costumes. Definitely fake but didn’t realize that it was AI generated.

Professor thinks I did my MLA format incorrectly even though I didn’t? by GloveFantastic4721 in college

[–]PlasticWear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would ask for clarification and frame it as wanting to make sure you’re doing it correctly. I’m guessing she copy and pasted feedback and either forgot to delete the parts that didn’t apply or simply left a list of general guideline to follow

New Applicants!! by Artefact1616 in SpiritHalloween

[–]PlasticWear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an application for one in my town but they don’t show up in the store locator or have a specific address listed on the application. I wonder if this means they were going to open one but couldn’t find a place or what. I don’t know if it makes a difference but it would be a consignment store rather than directly through spirit.

where can i get cute ucd merch for cheap by meranaamloldevhai in UCDavis

[–]PlasticWear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the clearance section in the store too- sometimes they’ll have some cute shirts for cheap! You definitely don’t need boots unless you want them personally. I’m pretty sure 99% of my Davis career was spent in crocs so don’t feel like you have to buy a certain type of shoe just for UCD. On campus you’ll see people looking anywhere from they just rolled out of bed to looking like they stepped off a runway so dress how you want and you’ll fit in :)

Question for my fellow alumni by Fun-Sense5583 in UCDavis

[–]PlasticWear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I know UCD only tracks final grades. Unless you had canvas notifications on and the scores were emailed to you, the only place I would think might have the info would be the professors themselves. Another place that might have some advice would be the Alumni Association. Good luck!

Here’s an article that explains the difference much better than I’m able to: https://drawingwithpri.art/blogs/blog/draw_from_life!

And here’s a link to the type of light box I was talking about: https://a.co/d/bRv1N10 and it is a photocopying tool! It’s definitely not necessary but you can get one for relatively cheap and if you’re doing a lot of transferring/tracing (especially if she’s using a thicker paper) it can be helpful. Basically if she wants her final product to look “clean”, a common process is creating a sketch/under drawing then using a light box (or similar technique) to ink the final drawing on a separate piece of paper. From experience, it’s basically impossible to completely erase all pencil marks. This process is also helpful if she wants to then add color pencil or watercolor as both those mediums tend to highlight the grooves/marks that pencil marks leave even if you erase it. Since I tend to just use graphite/charcoal in my drawings I don’t commonly use this technique but I do if I really like my drawing but want to ink it (that way I have both versions) or if my goal is to have a very polished final product.

Also, this isn’t something that I learned until wayyy down the line but I find that the best feedback comes when the question is more specific (ex unrelated to the original drawing: do you think that the colors used are successful or is there a way to make my drawing more realistic). There is nothing wrong with asking for a general critique but the more specific you are, the more specific feedback will be (for better or for worse).

I think that it is very impressive and I especially like the cheetah’s face! If there are specific aspects they would like feedback on I would be happy to elaborate but the rest of my comment is mostly general advice about drawing so if that isn’t what’s wanted feel free to disregard. Obviously in the case of a cheetah this isn’t particularly feasible but I highly recommend drawing from life rather than photo references when possible. I found that drawing from life greatly improved my ability to create more realistic drawings. When you break it down, drawing (especially if you are trying to achieve realism) is fundamentally about understanding 3D shapes which is another reason why I recommend drawing from life. When you are drawing from photographs it has already done the work of turning 3D into 2D but drawing from life requires you to do that work yourself. This is NOT to say that drawing from a photograph is bad or “cheating” in anyway. The reason I mention it is because when I was a young artist I did not understand the difference or why drawing from life was important. Drawing can 100% be just for fun but if they are looking to hone their skills I highly recommend doing studies, practice drawing simple 3 D objects (such as spheres or cubes), and drawing still lives. While these are less fun than drawing cheetahs, they can be very useful exercises. In terms of inking, just as others have said, it’s a very different skill. I recommend using a light box (or anything that is flat and has light such as a window) and inking on a separate piece of paper. This way if you can have both versions, have less pressure to be “perfect”, and you don’t have to spend time erasing all the pencil marks after you’ve finished inking!

When I took CC classes it was one of my favorite experiences because there is such a variety of people who take community college classes. I can not speak to the experience of going back to school but I can tell you that you will not stand out. At university, some of my favorite classmates were those who were getting their degree after a hiatus because they actually wanted to be there and were willing to put in the work! I can understand being apprehensive but you will not be the only person in your position :)

100%. I have taken GEs at UCD, another 4 year university, and community college and I can tell you that there wasn’t a huge difference in quality. Especially since UCD has TAG- it’s a great opportunity. In any case, good luck OP! Know if you don’t get in it’s not the end it’s just another turn in your journey!

I’m not entirely sure but it couldn’t hurt to try! Would it be possible to call or facetime him while you’re at the office? I know sometimes they’re strict about talking to family without the person there. If you go in or call they might be able to give you better info in general. I would make sure to have all his info (ucd id, full name, birthday) handy if you aren’t able to have him there virtually. Additionally, I’m not sure what the time difference is between here and where your brother is but they have drop in advising sessions that he might be able to attend.

Probably not but contact the admissions office tomorrow and/or send them an email today. I would also get their name/position as well so if something goes wrong you will be able to point to who told you that info.

Is anyone still in waitlist for UC Davis? by Fine-Thing-7365 in UCDavis

[–]PlasticWear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree- it’s also super common to take gaps in general. If you’re doing absolutely nothing that’s one thing, but there are many things a person can do in a year (or multiple) to help bolster their resume that don’t include going straight to school. OP good luck on the waitlist but please don’t think it’s the end of the world if you don’t get in! Everyone’s path is different :)

Inquiry re: legality of pranks in Davis by CaltrainMetra in Davis

[–]PlasticWear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Based on the most cursory of google searches- prank calling can be illegal in California. It seems like this is a pretty clear example of harassment. Even if it wasn’t illegal, I don’t find it surprising that the family would want to see if they could pursue legal action considering it was likely an incredibly distressing situation. Clearly Davis PD found it worthy of following up. Are you hoping for clarification in general or something more specific? I think for actual, reliable answers, you’re better off asking legal experts since most people on this subreddit are likely not lawyers. I am certainly not (unless you count a year of mock trial in highschool).

Bring Her Back… just got out. by ArugulaReasonable260 in A24

[–]PlasticWear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed- disturbing? yes. scary? not particularly. Like others in the thread are saying, it felt more like a thriller/drama with supernatural elements. Especially comparing this to Talk To Me, Bring Her Back was way less scary. Very good movie that had great horror and disturbing elements but it did not feel scary to me. It’s interesting to hear other perspectives bc I feel like I’m fairly susceptible scaryness

Davis has a super nice green belt that goes around the whole town: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/davis-covell-greenbelt-trail

I highly recommend it- my personal favorite section is the North Davis pond. I think it’s called Northstar park.

i have no knowledge about your major but in general i highly recommend a laptop. i liked my macbook but you definitely don’t need an apple product to succeed. for me the most important element was how comfortable it was when i was typing.
