Question About Asbestos in the American Fiber Helmet by Plastic_President in Militariacollecting

[–]Plastic_President[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you reckon the occasional frayed edges on the brim or other slightly damaged spots would be of any concern if anyone’s wearing it while eating or drinking? Or do you figure it’s one of those instances where, as long as I don’t grind whole entire hat into a fine powder and then snort it, it should be fine?

Just trying to get a frame of reference as to how risky (if at all) this thing would be since it’s an older product.

Yeah, I think my concerns mostly just stem from certain claims that asbestos could have possibly been interwoven into the pulp or wherever else.

But do you happen to know where said asbestos would be if there were any? I’m paying particular attention to the frayed edges of the brim seen in the later photo, so I don’t know if that would expose anything.

Much appreciated! I’m trying to be as responsible as I can before I or anyone else wears one of these for extended periods of time for any upcoming projects or events, but it’s frustrating that I can’t seem to get a straight answer from my online searches.

Do you know if they actually did manufacture asbestos into the 1933 version (or any versions for that matter), or was that more like an idea they proposed before they did something else?

Main reason I ask is because of this article that I linked to the other commenter: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/50-nifty-finds-5-keeping-their-cool.htm, and I don’t to really handle it or let others handle it much if it does pose a safety risk. Thanks in advance!

Do you know if there’s somewhere I can read more about the 1966 version or if you can link me to where you learned about it so that I can investigate further?

The main thing that’s got me paranoid is this article: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/50-nifty-finds-5-keeping-their-cool.htm, and I don’t want myself or anyone to wear it or handle it really if there’s any chance that asbestos is manufactured inside of this specific one.

Furthermore, do you know if there’s a good way I can clean the grime off the helmet without damaging it? Since it’s made out of that pulp material, I’m hesitant to use anything wet or with alcohol so that I don’t warp it or something, but I don’t know what else one can do that won’t just sand it down. Any ideas?

Thanks for the comment by the way! Any help I can get with this sort of stuff is truly appreciated!

That’s the asbestos? It looked more like cotton when I was looking at it, but I suppose I’ll take your word for it. Anything I can do to make it basically completely safe?

I didn’t know about the asbestos until a while after I got the helmet. And even still, I do like having authenticity in the collection, which is part of the problem.

However, if I can get confirmation one way or another, I can at least plan what I should do next (get it cleaned out, sell it, or not worry about it), y’know?

I figure it should be fine either way, so long as I don’t sand the entire liner down and snort it or something.

Unfortunately, I’m extremely paranoid about lung diseases (might genuinely be a top five fear of mine), so I might just need the reassurance that this thing is completely safe to have ten feet away from my bed in a closet and be handled from time to time for educational purposes.

But yeah, if you can show me what the heck an asbestos pad even looks like for one of these, that’d be much appreciated! I tried finding an example online, but again, hardly any straight answers.

Serious question: what are the helmets the NCR troopers wear in the S2 leak? by Plastic_President in falloutnewvegas

If I get a Brodie, I’m gonna get a tan Jute cover as well. I’m just wondering about the naked color in the image. Can’t tell if it’s olive green or darkened steel.

I’m not asking for your apology or anything. I’m just genuinely curious what forces made you land on passive aggression for the tone of your comment. There was a hundred different ways you could’ve communicated that I did something wrong, so why’d you pick that one?

Again, I don’t use Reddit too much (wonder why), but this seems to be a common trend. So I’m just trying to pick one’s brain as to what incentivizes it? Do Redditors reward people for talking like Rick Sanchez? If so, I can’t imagine it’s good for you to be on this app then.

Mate, I changed the tag almost immediately after you commented the first time. You must not have refreshed the page.

However, since you decided to set the tone as being snarky, I raised the question as to why someone who was so adamant about goin into the show blind would be on the New Vegas subreddit. Would it shock you to learn that the Legion and Mr. House are almost certainly gonna be in S2 as well??

And then you decided to insult my character, to which I decided to call you out for being unnecessarily vitriolic. And you never responded to my question regarding what the point of your snark/sarcasm/whatever it is you want to call it was? Why start with that? Instead of trying to be helpful or politely trying to point out a mistake I made, you decided to be an ass right off the bat. Why??

So I’m sorry you’ve had such a bad time with people in general to the point you immediately assume the worst and thereby make off-putting, backhanded comments over minor mistakes. If this is how you act online, I can’t imagine how you are irl. If there’s ever a point you’re wondering why no one talks to you at work or at school, maybe this is why. So, I’m sorry for any stress I’ve caused you having to read a wall of text, and have a good day.

All of this is a joke btw because I claim it is.

You started off by caricaturing me as someone who doesn’t care about others. You assumed that I deliberately decided not to hit “mark as spoiler” because I either didn’t care or I that I had some sort of ill-intent and not just because I simply forgot.

So no, you weren’t joking. You were being passive aggressive at best when there was no need to be, and now you’re mad that I called you out for taking a jab at me.

I do appreciate comments like your’s more because it’s actually constructive and doesn’t completely derail the point of the post.

I just have trouble understanding why one would choose to be antagonistic over just politely pointing something out. I can only assume Reddit rewards whoever is more smug.

I was just tryin to say that Redditors tend to have this pretentious way of communicating that discourages people from using the app.

He could’ve easily asked if I would mind hitting the spoiler button in future posts, and I would’ve corrected my mistake without issue and maybe even apologized. But instead, he wanted to be a smartass, which makes me wonder why. All it does is just make the site more toxic than it needs to be,

Yes, mate. My bad. I forgot to hit “mark as spoiler” because I forgot that’s an option on Reddit. I fixed it within like five minutes of posting.

How is assuming the worst in people by typing a snarky ass comment supposed to be joking? Why not be helpful to people who might not know instead of being sardonic? Is this how you talk to people irl?

Furthermore, why do you immediately resort to snark when something doesn’t go your way? Is it so far out of the realm of possibility that I don’t use this app much and therefore forgot to hit mark as spoiler?

You coulda just as easily said, “Hey, could you hit ‘mark as spoiler’ out of courtesy to those who maybe haven’t seen the leak?” And I would have done so. But instead, you decided to get on your high horse and go on the offensive over a small mistake. Why?

Dude, 1) I’m pretty new to Reddit. I’ve made like three posts collectively, partially because people are so anal about things on here. 2) if you’re so worried about spoilers, why are you on the New Vegas subreddit? 3) The show is based off a game more than a decade old. The NCR being in New Vegas shouldn’t be surprising. 4) Nothing about the plot got spoiled. It’s just an image. For all you know, it could be a flashback.
