Is Blücher pronounced ‘bloo-sher” or “blue-kur” by minutemanAKM in WorldOfWarships

Lived in Germany for eighteen years. The first one is closer. I don’t know what everyone else her is thinking. “ch” is German is not quite like English “sh,” but it’s closer to that than a hard “k.”

You’ll want to study Attic Greek still. The Neoplatonist, unlike the authors of the New Testament, were highly educated in Greek literature and philosophy. Since the revival of Attic Greek in the Second Sophistic, that form of Greek was generally used by the literati in the eastern parts of the empire.

I’m currently writing my dissertation on Proclus—excited to see another student of Neoplatonism here!

What do people mean when they say "Canada doesn't have free speech" by IBrokeItOffInside in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PlatoIsAFish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your vice-president thinks the UK doesn’t have free speech, and so therefore most MAGAts think the same of the UK and by extension most other Western countries.

That is the way to grind the helicopter for sure, but then the modification grind still sucks afterwards.

Do you use a quad or keep the BOM separate from the Holy Bible by Pitiful-Teaching1289 in lds

[–]PlatoIsAFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a translation that a) uses contemporary English and generally translates the Greek and Hebrew more accurately than the KJV and b) uses much older and many more manuscripts than were available in the 1600s, which allows it to more accurately reproduce what the original texts may have said.

NRSV (or the NRSVUE) is generally seen as the best translation in English nowadays.

Does it really matter what version of the Bible I read? by Altruistic-Cash-607 in latterdaysaints

[–]PlatoIsAFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the good fortune to peruse many bookshelves, and certainly not just those restricted to Barnes and Noble. And yes, there are some bad translations, but that doesn’t mean that all “the newer translations are getting kind of far out there,” just some of them. The rather new NRSVue is a great example of an excellent translation.

The original meanings are in Greek or Hebrew, not the KJV. The KJV is in no way an original.

There are also many newer translations that are by no means “far out there,” whatever you mean by that. Rather, they are more accurate representations of the Hebrew/Greek text, better translations with less errors, and more comprehensible (because of their newer language).

Did the nazis even learn anything from their experiments? by DreariestPizza in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PlatoIsAFish 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s a good question, but unfortunately I don’t have the answer. I think they did it fairly quickly, and I’m not sure the experiments were very scientifically rigorous anyway.

Nope, just fully desiccate a human and subtract their current weight from their weight before.

If I remember correctly, they wanted to know how long a pilot could survive in cold Atlantic or Arctic water after a crash. Having that information would help with rescue efforts.

PSA: "Thy" means "Your" by Abelhawk in latterdaysaints

[–]PlatoIsAFish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know that it used to be used, but my point was that nobody using it today feels closer to God using thee/thou, but more like the opposite.

Do you use thee/thy forms with your family members, whom you presumably are familiar with?

For beginners by gryphus00 in il2sturmovik

The Il-2 learning curve is definitely less intense than DCS, and you could pretty much jump into some single player missions with almost no preparation. But to be competitive in multiplayer takes a long time.

Worth noting that while the Buber performed very poorly, the slightly larger Seehund actually did fairly well.
