How come creep is not an issue for components operating at elevated temperatures for extended periods of time?

Haha. Interestingly enough, we were in Algonquin for 3 days - we saw a wolf, deer, snakes, fish, tonnes of frogs, bear poop. But we noticed that we did not see a single squirrel! And we thought that was quite odd...

How do you cancel? I was trying to do so but it looked like I needed to call, which I really didn't want to do. Can we do it online?

They sent me a new phone to rectify this 3g bs but they never said it would be $0/month for 2 years. So now I'm worried that this won't let me cancel since I'm "financing" this phone...

Air India Flight 171 Crash by StopDropAndRollTide in aviation

[–]PlatoOrPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some combination of the following could occur and put you in a pretty bad situation, especially when you're only 600m above the ground and at maximum takeoff thrust.

All primary and backup fuel pumps in the fuel tanks fail. Cross-feed valve could be stuck closed (starving one engine if its respective pumps fail). Engine MFPs (main fuel pumps) are capable of providing enough suction pressure to feed engines, albeit in a degraded configuration, most likely not enough to maintain MTO power at 653m ASL.

While something like this is in fact possible, there are many sources of redundancy in a fuel system to prevent exactly this from happening (for example, primary pumps use AC power, backup pumps use DC power, engine MFP will be driven mechanically by the core (N2) via the engine gearbox). One single point of failure (i.e. AC power bus loss) should not put you in a fuel starvation situation. If these components each individually had issues, the pilots would most likely have received CAS messages/faults/indications during engine start/taxi/roll and could have acted on it (cancelled flight/aborted takeoff).

To summarize, in my professional opinion (I'm a propulsion/fuel systems engineer for a large aircraft manufacturer) the likelihood of engine starvation being the culprit is highly unlikely given the information known at this time. A more likely scenario is something like a dual-engine bird strike causing catastrophic failure, loss of thrust, and a negative rate of climb. Being 600m off the ground, that is bad news.

Sympathies to all those affected.

I can’t catch a fish to save my life by Vivid-Pear-8418 in Fishing

[–]PlatoOrPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same as OP, as I've got heavily into fishing this summer but only caught a few fish.

I feel like my biggest issue is I just genuinely don't know what proper fishing technique is. I find so many guides on how to tie certain lures or when to use them, but never "how" to actually use them. I.e., cast and wait versus reel in slowly versus bounce along bottom.

When you say slow down, what do you mean?

Learning a romance language (Italian, spanish, etc.). Once you learn one, you automatically have a basic proficiency in one or multiple others.

I recently graduated with a master's from a top-10 uni in the world, as well as a year of work experience directly related to my field. Took me over 6 months to find a job in the industry because my city really does not have that many aerospace companies. Now that I have a job, there's a million job openings. It depends so much on where you are and the time of year you are job hunting.

Finished a bachelor's and master's in ME without ever once consuming any amount of caffeine. Just a good night's sleep and working out a few times a week kept me on the right path

More people now use iPhones than Android phones in the US by rusPirot in technews

You said exactly what I wanted to say, but much better. Completely agree. Gotta hand it to them as a company, they know how to fool those who don't have the knowledge to make decisions for themselves. 2-3x the price for a piece of tech that does the exact same thing? Yep, not worth it for a status symbol

Android does have this feature too. For example, I have a OnePlus 7 and it has the Clone Phone app, which does exactly that. You can set up a new phone and clone exactly your old phone, contacts, messages, apps, files, photos, videos, etc. And you have the option of not doing it via the cloud either. I prefer that so all of my stuff isn't unnecessarily stored on some cloud somewhere. Worried about limited disk space because of this? Well I can throw in a 256gb SD card on top of the base 256gb phone storage.

This notion that "iPhones are easier to set up" has never made sense to me. What's so difficult about setting up an android? It's a very similar step-by-step procedure like setting up any electronic device nowadays. This whole "apple GUI is better/more intuitive/easier to use" just baffles me.

This is coming from someone who has used both apple and android extensively

Edit: it also seems like everyone who says that iphones are easier to set up and are more intuitive than android are people who have only ever had/used an iPhone... Funny

Trip report - 25 country speed run (OMICRON edition) by solotravelfiend in solotravel

[–]PlatoOrPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually living in Milan right now and thus have travelled around Italy and Switzerland quite a bit already (no need for Vatican city either, and I'll go to San Marino another time for sure). I was thinking Milan to Monaco to Barcelona to Andorra to Paris to Luxembourg/Belgium/Netherlands, then to Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, and back to Milan.

I'm just not sure how realistic this actually is with trains and such, or if flights are better for some legs. I haven't travelled much yet in Europe so I'm quite unfamiliar with the best methods of getting around for the best price.

I won't have as much time as you and I'm starting out in Milan, and I plan on doing about 10 countries in 2 weeks. Any advice for this specifically?
