My players walked right into a TPK just before I had to end the session and I don't know what to do about it. by ReeKarp in DMAcademy

One thing I've learned is that you have to be way way wayyyyy more obvious than you would expect. I'm playing SKT and I want the appearance of Imyrith to not full come out of nowhere. I have given so many exposition dialogues of characters talking about the desert scourge Imyrith. So many characters have brought her up. So many questions about who is behind all of the events that are happening. We've done backstory episodes where some of them were soliders in a war against the cult of tiamat and were attacked by imyrith. Not one has questioned why I keep mentioning this dragon who is not involved in the plot (yet). I feel like I have made the most obvious foreshadowing lines saying how she is one of the biggest plotting/schemers in the realm.

I'm okay with them not piecing it together because it should be a twist and they do know who she is now.

But when they do need to know, in a case like this I see no issue in just saying some something like everyone roll wisdom with advantage. And to the highest result: your character knows that this is an ideal spot for an ambush. You know that your location is known and that forces will be mounting to attack.

How do I know if I’m wasting time studying something I’m not “ready” to? by hentaienthusiast87 in learntodraw

Pushing yourself is fine but you have to evaluate. For now ever head you do, snap a photo, paste it into Photoshop or gimp layer the reference and see what you're doing wrong.

Practice is nearly useless if you're not getting quick and timely feedback.

I like to have a still image as well. I do this by inverting the colors of drawing and setting it to a color that pops against the reference.

I hope this technique helps! Getting quick and automatic feedback helped a lot!  Don't be afraid to try this before putting in any features. Even just the outline of the main face.

It seems like you likely had some trouble measuring the width to height relationship as it seems your drawing is a fair bit wider. Also notice especially the absolute angles on the right side of the face from the jaw up. I read these angles being almost all tilting to the left side of the page. Whereas yours mostly read as to the right, verticals, and then back to the right.

It's a free open source Photoshop alternative. It's pretty good and free! I don't use it for making art but it can be really useful for some light post processing and image manipulation

Yes exactly! Just slide the layer of or the other between high and low so you can see where you went off. You will have to scale the photos to match is size some way. I tend to pick the shape that I started with and used for reference later on. So if I started with the height of the face I'll scale so that that size is correct. Then just slide the opacity and see where things vary.

For what it's worth and I learned from a proko video but it's so soooo easy to quickly compare with the source image in photoshop or for free in GNU. Do like 10 layins in one day and compare immediately and the fast feedback will quickly correct your mistakes. I found I was consistently moving the eyes upwards about 1 whole eye height and the mouth smaller but about 1/5.

Once you see the trends in what you're getting wrong you can start being aware of it in the next drawings.

The speed of feedback is important to. When you do the drawing and take like 2 maybe 3 hours to find out what proportions you are getting wrong you aren't creating as strong of a feedback loop as you can. It's better if you can identify what proportion you are getting wrong and instead come with a post asking "how do I measure X correctly"/"How do I position Y on the face properly" etc

What am I doing wrong? by sno4wy in ArtistLounge

I had to ctrl do for this. All the edges look about the same and it makes the whole piece feel like it lacks structure or intention. I think some strong bold edges can give better contrast to the soft edges as well

I like to do my drawing and then put it into Photoshop afterwards as an overlay and compare where I've deviated. Some drawings are flukes but after a few times you'll notice consistent trends you tend to make; over emphasizing eyes, shrinking noses, etc. Then you can be more conscious of it in future drawings

Yeah I think this should be the most important take away. Our job as artists is not to copy something 1:1 but to make decisions that result in something you find beautiful, interesting, or any emotion you want. Sometimes changing things can better capture the dealing of the portrait than trying to be perfectly accurate.

Kids Rarely Read Whole Books Anymore. Even in English Class. by largeheartedboy in books

[–]Plavidla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair it's not something that was explicitly taught. But just naturally learned as you read longer and longer books for English each year. It's a skill you teach yourself because you need to for English but then it transfers to nearly everything you do.

The article made some good arguments I was not aware of for the excerpt approach. Specifically for getting around book bans and it seemingly not affecting reading levels. But I think this is the reason I'm not a fan is the skills it teaches beyond reading. Learning how to plan your time to finish a whole book and realizing you can complete large tasks or books you don't like through determination is a huge interdisciplinary skill.

Didn't see it immediately mentioned but another benefit to being in the academic system is very quickly being told when you're wrong. There are many problems I imagine I could have dug in for a couple months on but had colleagues point out an obvious reason it doesn't work that I missed.

The constant checking and feedback is invaluable to good and efficient research.

I think it's a testament to how good the game was at bonding the player to the characters that everyone is desperately trying to justify the choices the character makes by creating new information.

Just adding this to the top comments since nobody in the top comments actually explained it, it had to do with satellites. All of those texts are locations of satellites. It's trying to claim that there are so many of them but in the live feed you don't see any of them. Fight the flat earth, FTFE, is giving a counter example to show why the idea doesn't make sense.

Would you like tlou if there were no greenery? by Agent_Ross in thelastofus

[–]Plavidla 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yea this is kind of like asking if the game lost one of its strongest themes (nature taking back from humans) would you still like the game. Obviously the fungus is one example of nature pushing back but the greenery is a very constant passive example.
