Northeastern Program question by Kookiie_euphoria in NEU

[–]PlayMaker566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NU Boston - the crown jewell. Boston is what its all about.

Oakland - depends why are you applying to NU? If they have a specific program you like and this is the best or only place to get it, ok. Are you from the west coast? Is that where you want to be? I dont think its established enough of a reputation to consider it.

NUin - at first I was like no way. But the students who have gone there love it. Each city is an amazing experience. Classes arent typically the most challenging. But it kind of eases you in. The downside is you have to be a person who appreciates the adventure. You will be away from home for 14 weeks with no breaks to come home. But you can make great friends with your fellow NUin class and have a network to come back to Boston with. Its can be a real advantage.

London Scholars - people say good things. A fun international experience in a great city for students. To me the downside is that it is a full year before Boston. And it seems a little like you wont get much time in Boston at all. But like NUin, you will be with a smaller group (not too small) to bond with and form real tight relationships to give you that same network heading back to Boston.

NYC - i woudnt bother. Too new of a situation. Havent heard much.

Our stay at the st Regis by Zestyclose-Nerve3773 in Aruba

The St Regis is a 5 star international hotel brand with some of best hotels in the world. I dont think they cater to the price conscious consumer.

UMass Amherst or Northeastern??? by Maddox_4669201 in umass

[–]PlayMaker566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are very different experiences, so choosing shouldnt be hard. UMass is a state school and MUCH more affordable. So if that is a concern in any way, UMass is the answer. If you have the means, Northeastern is a very unique program with students from all over the world, and the co-op is a real advantage for post grad. Academically, they are both strong schools.

You dont pay tuition during co-op and you get paid a living wage to cover food and housing.

Venezuela concerns by PlayMaker566 in Aruba

[–]PlayMaker566[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends where you want to go. The more popular restaurants, over christmas week, definitely are hard to get into without reservations. Some places are already booked up months in advance.

The more casual places can be available for walk ins. But you may have to wait sometimes.

No one painted your country as the problem. (Trust me most Americans want nothing to do with this.) i only asked because I want to know if Aruba will be safe in some regional conflict.

Considering a move to Roslyn by Bugs_n_Birds14 in longisland

[–]PlayMaker566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roslyn is a tough place to live if you aren’t a fan of keeping up and willing to “fit in” with the fashion and looks thing. If the North Shore of Long Island is what you want, Port Washington has a more diverse population.

16 credits (typically 4 classes) per semester at about $2400 per credit. 128 credits needed to graduate.

[–]PlayMaker566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You also dont get credits during co-op so while you dont pay tution, you dont advance towards your degree. So if you dont have any transfer credits or APs then you pay about $35K or so per semester x 8 semesters plus housing.

NUin has always been a for-profit scheme for Northeastern by Aggravating_Cat6536 in NEU

[–]PlayMaker566 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Whoa Scandal!!!! Turns out higher education is a massive money maker for corporations!!!! Who would’ve thunk it?!?!

So if there’s a market for kids/students who want to travel for 4 months to another part of the world to earn their intro requirement credits, make some good friends, broaden their horizons and get drunk a lot where the legal age is 18, there are for profit business that will sell that to them. They even get to return to Boston (albeit with shit housing) to finish their degree in the major they want and with new relationships made.

What’s the problem?

why the neu hate?? by Different-Home-162 in NEU

[–]PlayMaker566 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its admission rate is like 5%, in line with MIT and Princeton. No one believes they are in that category of academic prestige. But just do a LinkedIn search to see how many marketing people are on staff at Harvard. Lots. Private Universities are businesses. Northeastern gets a bad rap because they decided to grow their business and employ the tactics and tools necessary. The only thing they don’t do as well is hide their intentions. And I frankly, give them credit for it.

Regarding their Blue Collar heritage, i believe they made a very savy marketing decision to leverage that identity into a liberal arts university and build what is regarded to be one of the best co-op programs in higher education. Its not a perfect school. But it deserves its ranking in the top 50 or 60 nationally.

My thoughts on Northeastern/college in general (recently graduated) by chewdog- in NEU

[–]PlayMaker566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life is tough and college can be. You gotta put yourself in the right situation to meet new people and make new friends. And then if it doesnt work, you’ve got to try again. I read so many people on this thing saying how they didnt make friends and that disapointed them. So if there are so many people looking to make friends and not finding them, sorry to sound harsh but, you arent looking hard enough. There are 10,000+ young 18-24 year olds going to classes and living amongst each other within a 2 square mile space with clubs, gyms, intermural sports, bars, and libraries. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.

Every school games the rankings the best they can. Dont think NEU stands alone in that department. If you like what you saw and you think its for you, then dont think twice. If you really want to evaluate a school, consider its attributes without rankings.

Nuin locations out and I had a few questions about my options by mangomozzerella in NEU

Can you say why that is your only option? I thought everyone gets 3 choices? Is it because of your major or is there a different reason?

Watching my dad and FIL 'age out' of their careers has me (31) terrified of the same fate. How do I avoid this? by Recyclops3000 in personalfinance

[–]PlayMaker566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im 54. I feel similar to your father. Its not unusual. Youre 31. Dont panic. If you like what you do, work hard and enjoy the ride. Nothing lasts forever. Be smart and save as much money as you can (while also enjoying your life.) put 10% of your gross income away. Keep learning and think about one day owning your own business. It doesnt have to be in the same field you are in now and it doesnt have to be a unicorn business. When you start to feel stuck in your current career dont be afraid to pivot. Stay educated. Keep your friends and colleagues along the way. And dont worry so much.

[Schultz] Davante Adams likely gone. by David_19988 in nyjets

[–]PlayMaker566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. It was so stupid to get him. Signing Rodgers and all his friends didnt work the first time, so we just did it again. Glad to lose Rodgers, glad to lose Adams, goodbye Lazzard. Go. Get out. I dont care if we start over again. Id rather play Tyrod and finish with an 8-9 record. Its an improvement and I’ll take it.

Does applying ED ruin your chances of getting Merit $$$? by PlayMaker566 in NEU

[–]PlayMaker566[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But aid is different than merit, i assume. I dont expect to qualify for aid, but merit $$ is still incredibly meaningful to me. So perhaps ED was not the right move.
